HOMETOWN: Adelaide

In 2012, our internationally acclaimed underground maven is veteran drum & bass DJ and keen boxer, Dusk. Since winning the UK’s DJ MAG International Pick n Mix competition, Dusk has built a solid resume of accolades, bookings, killer sets and production credits – including initiating her own take on boosting the female DJ scene in an event called Tribe back in ’04 a collaboration of female DJs, MCs and artists performing to a backdrop of breaks, drum & bass and hip-hop.

Continuing to champion female DJs at a time when it was neither ‘cool’ nor ‘easy’ to take on the boys, Dusk helped initiate the all-female house, breaks and electro night Booty Beats at pioneering house club Savvy Bar, also being invited to join the Adelaide Breaks Collective as official promotion representative and resident DJ. Later that year, she picked up two nominations at the South Australian Dance Music Awards as a Breaks DJ, and for her drum n bass/breaks specialist radio show with Fresh FM.

Internationally, Dusk spent a few years bringing her sound to Europe, the UK, around Asia and even to Egypt, where she headlined the event Cairo Nights.Since then, Dusk has branched out, genre dabbling in a new brand of mashup party style, taking on disco, urban, house and more. Again, she found herself recognised – this time being the only female DJ in South Australian history to be nominated to compete in the global Redbull Thre3Style DJ battle – a competition emphasising quick thinking mash-up party blends and elements of live remixing.

So with a resume that challenges anyone to fit into a one page biography, why would a veteran DJ like Dusk enter She Can DJ in 2012? It’s all about dreams, of course: “I entered for the opportunity to live my ultimate dream, on a label boasting artists like Depeche Mode and The Beatles. I’d be crazy not to give it a try!” As the DJ with a longest list of achievements in the Top 10 this year, and a clear advocate for female DJs everywhere, Dusk is chasing a record deal – and it may just be the only thing not already on her resume.
