DJ NAME: Alley Oop
NAME: Emma Sainsbury
GENRE: Deep house, house, disco and techno
HOMETOWN: Sydney

After starting out in classical music, Alley Oop made her way into DJing after a missed flight. “I started DJing in 2008, when a friend missed a flight back from interstate and asked me to cover for him. I had always collected and been involved in music, but had never DJ’d before. I packed a bag of records, got a quick lesson on the mixer, and have been addicted ever since!”

Alley Oop’s love for music has found her accumulate a long list of notable residencies and festival appearances, also supporting talent including 2 Many DJs, Jack Beats and Aeroplane. But it’s her new love of production that has her excited in 2012, with a brand new single out now on Yes Yes Records: “It’s called Nothing Left to Say, it’s by Diamond Lights, and my sister Junipa is singing on it. I’m so proud and excited as it’s my first release and it was incredible to work with my sister.”

Alley Oop’s unique style also finds her playing out her Sundays running Dust, a deep house night in Kings Cross, as well as a new disco and house night on Fridays at Ivy Pool as of September. With sets flowing in from across Australia, including a recent Splendour In The Grass appearance, as well as remixes and more original tracks on the horizon, it’s clear Alley Oop is a killer contender in this year’s SCDJ competition. “I’m passionate about making and playing electronic dance music, and being involved in any and every aspect of clubbing and festival culture,” she told us. “I’m grateful for all the opportunities that have presented themselves so far in my life, including this fantastic competition – and I’ve found a way to do what I love every single day.”

If you mention classical music in your DJ bio you have already lost.
