Edu Imbernon mix and tour Q&A
Thu 7th Feb, 2013 ITM-FMin
While he’s still a relative newcomer, Edu Imbernon has used his time industriously. Since turning heads with El baile alemán alongside Coyu in 2009, his releases have been housed on Get Physical, Young Turks, Skint, Stil vor Talent, Cr2, Noir Music, Trapez, Great Stuff, Diynamic and his own label Eklektisch. This month he’s heading to Australia for his first ever club tour here, so we picked up this live mix and had a quick chat with Edu.
We’re still in the early days of 2013. How was 2012 for you? What stood out as some special moments and achievements?
2012 was the best year of my life so far. I made some really special music and played at the best clubs around the globe including Space Ibiza, Watergate Berlin, Fabric and D-Edge in Sao Paulo.
As a DJ, where do you feel your sound is at right now? What kinds of records are really drawing you in at the moment?
Music with feeling and soul, that touches my heart. I will say a mix between indie, deep house and tech.
You recently remixed the xx’s Reunion. It’s such a distinctive track – what was your approach to remixing that? Does you enjoy working with vocals in remixes?
Remixing the xx is an amazing thing, they are my favourite band and it’s an honour for me to remix a record for them for the second time after the success of Crystallised. I really love remixing anything very musical, especially if it has vocals, guitars, basslines. I’m a big fan of their sound and this remix for Reunion is a really special record for me.
I’ve read that you were looking to start your album in 2013. How is that coming along?
The plan is starting the album around May and June. I’m very excited about it and I think it’s coming at the perfect time for me. I feel very inspired!
You’ve released music on a range of labels – do you think you’ll continue that approach, rather than aligning with just one label?
I’ve actually released on lots of labels but in fact in 2013 I’m going to keep releasing music only on labels that make me feel like a part of their family. Some labels are just so cold and it’s not my vibe. 2013 looks like I’ll be working with labels such as Culprit, Stil Vor Talent, Suara and my own label Eklektisch.
This is set to be your first tour of Australia. What are you looking forward to trying out on the dancefloors here?
I don’t know what to expect; I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. I’ll be playing lots of new records and remixes and bringing some summer vibes, which I totally love. Looking forward to it!
