View Full Version : The best 3 events ever in Adelaide!!
Michaela
12-Mar-02, 12:19pm
What is the best event you have ever been to?
Best 3... in no particular order!
Fascination, 1992, Warehouse in Port Adelaide by Larger Than Life
Inquest, 1993, First event Old Adelaide Goal by Instantaneous Productions
Carl Cox, ~1996, Chemistry (when Carl Cox walked on to the stage and the crowd went mental)
My poor memory just doesn't help me here so I will contribute three nights that I do happily recall ... seeing DJ Sasha at Synagogue in 94 was fun (and my first delicious night out as a young 'un); Naked Music 1 at Lion Arts two years ago had a beeyouutiful vibe (and b/c it was a day event) and I do recall Jeff Mills at Synergy many years ago as a damn good evening. .. ah, memory lane ;o)
independance day 2 at ent centre
sasha at origin 1992 - lerox
liquid with dream frequency
(in no particular order of course) :)
Sasha at Origin was a great night... easter 92 :)
How are you skot?
Beekayz
12-Mar-02, 09:50pm
Wow!
I didn't realise there were so many old farts on this board or did you all just start young? ;)
Old farts, I love it ;o)
I started doing the party thing as a 17 yo, had a LOT more energy then (although I am only 25 now!!).
Michaela
12-Mar-02, 11:53pm
Me too, Lotus. I know exactly what you mean about the energy thing!
Certain things do get better with age though :):)
Totally agree with you there, Michaela ;o)
PaulHamon
13-Mar-02, 12:55am
I know for a fact that both Skot and Xylic are very very old :)
But not as old as some... hehe
My favourite 3 are
Origin - Lerox 92
Liquid NYE 92/93
Rave 3 - Limbo nightclub (now demolished)
I also thought that the Go - Imagineer parties over 4 weeks in the 1992 Fringe was also up there
Way too many parties but the old parties have most of my memories as it was so good back then
Mr S
what are they, im sick of searching for the good things.
hmm,
so many to choose from.......
in no particular order
a) Carl Cox @ the Ark
b) Ultraworld 4 @ the gaol
c) Lenny Dee and Sy @ heaven
hmm, most memorable maybe. I think i was the designated driver those particular nights.

very thoughtprovoking and scary (flashback!) question that mr mike. best organized (public & not forest events), welcome '90, DJ Paul + Prodigy at masonic hall, & a crazy foam party at the Ark, no recollection what year....+ all nomoss events
techboy
14-Mar-02, 12:48pm
Maybe you should re-phrase that question to be:
<b>"The best 3 events in Adelaide in the last 3 years!!</b>
I wanna hear about what's been going on lately! ;-)
PaulHamon
14-Mar-02, 04:29pm
Carl Cox at The Ark.. went off....
Not as much as: The Ark Reunion...
I saw 'blue electricity on the dance floor that night!'
Michaela
16-Mar-02, 12:39am
I had a great nite when Dave Seaman played at Nation 1999 (in the last three years for techboy :):)
Even though the air-conditioning was really bad and they ran out of water half-way through the nite, I was there with my closest and best friends :)
Beekayz
16-Mar-02, 06:21pm
I feel the same was about when Dave Seaman & Timo Maas played St Pauls last year for the Renaissance Tour.
Not much of a crowd (given it was the Thursday before Stardust) but I had a ball :)

Don't think I could name just 3... lots of awesome memories from all of these events listed below, that I performed at...

I have to totaly agree with you there Michaela. That was a great night apart from the intense heat and lack of water. I was there with my bestest friends also, and is definately one of the most memorable recent parties
Stop it!
Your all making me miss being involved with promoting some of the before mentioned parties.....
:(
well Xylic you know that the oldies are the ones generally more experienced and who have honed their partying skills quite nicely ;)

1. UR at the Old Lion 1992. Shut down by the cops very early because it was some political movement that was going to start a riot... or was it the noise??
2. Metro NYE 92/93 - Same night as Liquid at Le Rox. Go the Carrot Squad.
3. Jigsaw 94(?) - I just remember HMC playing Seawolf and Nocturbulous Behaviour.
Any nights at Underworld or Future. The Kool Aid party at Metro was not normal(!). The opening night of the Saturday at Disco with HMC playing and the Hard Yakka fashion parade - the girl with the metal plates and the grinder, don't try that at home.
The night of the raid at the Crown & Sceptre, when HMC played even harder and harder whilst the lights were on, the rooms were locked down and the cops went to work.
The orange drums at Toxic and of course Claude Young.
The Dirty House party at Gekko's for the launch of one of their EP's.
Any Spin The Bottle.
Head now officially hurts. Going to bed.

UR at the OLD LION... was not that busy.. I think it was one of Centrals first shows... It was an expensive ticket... (for the day)
But what a great show!! The big flashing U / R / U / R lighting rig... really rocked
a_618allstarr
20-Mar-02, 10:31am
Yeah, it was. However it was UR on their Method Of Force tour.
The hard, spanking sounds of UR back in the day was techno.
...Oh I think Jigsaw was 93 as well..
UR at the Lion was great.. until the cops closed it down!

Yes, it's been too long agreed.
I had my birthday at the UR gig. I think I did a Pulse gig before hand that night.
Oh the memories of being way young and not having to worry about ID.
Michaela

Pulse....the Dom Polski shows when they we're running fortnightly...
Question: is total euphoria still running?

1. Carl Cox, Darren Emerson, HMC and Will-E-Tell at the Young Street Car Park Party.
2. Carl Cox @ Heaven Easter Good Friday 96 or 97?
3. Either one of Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke (with welding rig setup next to decks) or Derrisk May @ St Pauls ! !

21-Mar-02, 06:18pm
I think it was 96 for The Ox at Heaven...

Young St Carpark... errgh I had the flu that night and didn't stay long. Never been impressed by Carl Cox anyway (that's my opinion, so don't get on your high horses!).

Waxworks @ St.Pauls June 2001
Interlude by Goa Central @ The Irish Club Nov 2000
Adrenlin with Kevin Energy @ St. Pauls Sept(?) 2001
These were my favorite parties because they contained all the right ingrediants
Great venue, great friends in the right mood, the music i wanted to hear at that time and also because something awe inspiring happened on each night.

It's hard to quantify the 3 best events, so I'll go with best memories:
Cam playing Fridays in the basement under Tribe Cafe (Now Big Star Rundle St).
Beastie Boys first gig at the Old Lion, then straight to see Kevin Saunderson at the big ticket (UR played an un-advertised support and rocked it, much more than at the Old Lion) - what an amazing night of awsome musik!!
First Imagineer Party at the old Lion Arts Centre Warehouse (now demolished) - hey I was young and off chops!!!
Plus some great nights at Metro and (I'm biased) Check the Technique 3 at Cargo, with Mark Walton - that night really got people dancing to Hip Hop again.

Enchanted 2001 was unbelievable, from a DJ's point of view one of the best events I have ever witnessed.
They Came from Mars II, wasn't half bad either from what I can remember. Never been to Adelaide other than those 2 occasions, so can't really comment any further than that.

best three after some consideration would be (in date order)
Meltdown @ Masonic Centre + Synagogue 1994
moment that comes to mind was maxim from the prodigy walking through the crowd with those freaky contacts
Planet of love @ Masonic centre January 1995
Carl Cox no longer playing hardcore and Laurent Garnier playing one of my favourite sets of all time. Yet not that many people had rocked up as most were dissapointed with carl's new music policy.
now that's what i call hard house :P
Electronic Wilderness Mar/Apr 1996
at douglas scrub, in a natural amphitheatre with lots of little things going on everywhere, standout from memory was Ollie Olson from melbourne
There have been plenty of great parties since then (probably even better ones) but when it's new it seems to hold much more meaning
and just to add another edge to the topic would be three events i missed seeing due to being underage:
UR @ the old lion
hearing the recording of a set on dreaming daisies was not the same
Independance 2 july 93
a few friends from school went and i being the only one in the group and possibly the state not being able to get in to McMahons Tonsley underage decided it wasn't worth the risk of paying for the ticket. apparently 2120 rocked it
Universal @ Le Rox Nov 93
1 week before i turned 18, in the middle of yr12 exams
Joey beltram, NJOI and others damn that must have been a good party

18-Apr-02, 11:42am
Independance 2 - Claude rocked it and so did Alan Oldham. That also had the stage in the foyer doing hip-hop, with Australia's Black Eyed Peas, before the new BEP of course.. and lots of others... maybe Def Wish Cast and definitely Finger Lickin Good... Sheesh!
Had forgotten about Tribe downstairs, but now that you mention it... a nice dark space.
Something about those dark corners of Tribe, downstairs at Le Rox (Future), Underworld @ Old Lion.
On a Cam tip as well..
Some good nights were had at the Synagogue at Underground Solution, I remember doing a few diffferent Thurs over the years there... that one as well as the night called Alien(s) or something... always loved trying to do my 8.30 lectures on a Friday before work.
Carnivale de la Fuq which was in the outdoor space next to Urban Streetwear which had Cam and Richie Hawtin until the heavens opened and was shifted to the Gog. Around Valentines Day 92 or 93.. can't remember.
Another one was the launch of HMC's 'Materialise" at FAD where they had the silohuettes of all the Juice guys along the wall upstairs. Still to this day, one of the most trance inducing sets I've heard him play - from dub style Rhythm and Sounds to the most droning Regis. Phoar. I'd say that was around March 99.

Good memory.....I'd forgotten about that party!!!

The event that sticks in my mind the most is Enchanted 2001 - Krust & Die made my night. So many people grooving to the sounds of Full Cycle. I think Enchanted had a much better vibe than Gatecrasher SSS in Sydney the previous weekend. (Although Roni and Dynamite was worth every cent of the $104 ticket)
;)
Michaela
21-Apr-02, 09:23pm
How' bout those Twice As Nice parties? :P ;) :p
Smiley1
10-May-02, 11:53am
BDO 2001 - sonicanimation, Roni Size & Reprazent, Carl Cox (and many fucking excellent bands)
Enchanted 2001 - Krust & Die - and standing on the jump next to the Systo stage looking at the sea of ravers - fantastic stuff.
Falls Festival 2000 - 30 December - Fucking awesome! sonicanimation, freestylers, resin dogs, avalanches, honeysmack (and that was one night of 2 days / 2 nights - in total the best event I've ever attended)...
Unfortunately Gatecrasher SSS should have been on the list as far as electronic music goes cos Green Velvet, LTJ Bukem & Conrad, 12" Thumpers and many more rocked my world, but we went to Melbourne and De La Soul lost any respect I ever had for them by ripping off Roni Size & Dynamite (the main reason we drove across), left a sour feeling when it shoulda been great.

nothing will ever be the same.. change is an unavoidable, and important aspect of life... the scene is stale because it's old (like me), it's no longer new... We can never again look at the world the same way, through the same virgin eyes full of youthful awe and wonder...

I think your viewpoint changes as you get older and it's not the scene that gets stale, but your interest waviers! You ask an 18 year old if the scene is stale and the most like not to agree!!
For me the 2 best were when unltrsonic and hocus pocus came to alelaide in the early 90's and played at port adelaide docks and Sturdust Festival this year was good for me too.....havent been to many raves

Hmmmm, so many from the last 10 years to choose from... I guess Dyewitness @ Heaven in 94 ( ? ) was crazy, UW 10 @ St Pauls in 98 and uhhh JJJ Live Mix Up @ old Synagogue was a cool night, even have the recordings of that lying around somewhere.
Mayday @ The Ark in 92 ( ? ) stretching the memory there, still have that tape as well around here.
The best bit about going to raves/clubs etc is that every night is a new experience and meet new people. I don't think I have ever had one really bad night at all, except the night I had PMA.....lets not go there
As you get older, you learn new tricks, pace yourself a bit more ( although not lately ) and you appreciate things abit more, but can also make you abit more cynical though.

Have been going out since 1996 still feel my biggest regret was not going out before that but living in the country was always a problem. Must say though since then I have made up for lost time partying with the best of them. Word up Rayda, Amo, Noddy, Patch, Yappa and all the party crew, we have had some ****in unbelievable time. Bring on the next 6 years I have no reason to stop now. BOH!!
My favourite three parties are:
1. UW 20 DJ Marky - THE MAN!! Its time to get Grimey that guy is amazing he's got the skills to pay bills.
2. Grooverider 1999 @ Diamonds my ears are still ringing
3. Enchanted Forrest II @ Cape Jervis - Krust @ Suv and my memories of Noddy playing his set when he thought his hands where handcuffed together and someone had to pass him his records so he could keep playing.
Its hard to stop at three as there are probably 100 parties where I have gone home satisfied. I've said it before and I'll say it again, ADELAIDE ROCKS HARDER THAN ANYONE ELSE AND YOU CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK!

I unpacked a box of CDs last weekend, and there was my "Mothership" CD on Juice.
That was one helluva party at The Ark in 93. I remember there was the whole community there, from the ravers to the nodding tech-heads alike.
Also, same venue, it was Christmas Eve, 92 I think. Talk about a friendly night, pity those dollar champagne and "insert liqueur here" weren't so friendly.
I remember walking up Fullarton Rd to Waite Oval with a few friends at about 6am and decided to take a break, only to find the police talking to us half an hour later telling us to go home and spend Xmas day with our families.. oh the joys of a hangover on Xmas day. ;)

good night... think it was Independance Day 2
My 3 most memorable were
Toxic:
Grand Prix weekend 1991 - I went to Liquid first, then Toxic at Le Rox and spent some time down at the Pitstop Party. That was my induction to the rave scene in Adelaide as a 15 year old. What a night! Purple Specs were so sweet I gobbled 3. Le Rox was going off!! And the weather was sooooo nice and warm. DJ 2120 - respect.
Jigsaw:
1992 (i think). Kick arse venue in a warehouse down near the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. The night was bit of a blur but all I remember is how MPK kicked ass and upstaged the foreign DJs (I think Beltram was there that night). The venue was sooo cool. Really well put together with the corkscrew dancefloors and all. A1 Rave!
3rd: I can't remember (must have been those purple specs).
cheers.

Couldn't narrow it down to just 3, but some good nights I recall:
Synergy (?) parties @ the Synagogue
Future parties @ Lerox basement
Richie Hawtin @ Synagogue in 94
Derrick May @ Lerox in 94 (despite the support dj, some Syd happy hard guy)
HMC saturdays @ Crown and Scepter 95/96
the Dirty House parties
+ lots of others..
HMC @ Isobar 2004.
i did the review for that... was my first time seeing HMC
:stroke:

A party in the basement of Le Rox / Vultrek around '91 or '92
& Freedom at a scouts hall, on the river in Port Adelaide, again 91 or 92, can't remember... still one of the best parties I've ever been to 8)
Future Music for me recently would have to be one of the best parties I have ever been to in Adelaide. Well organised, great variety of tunes and awesome vibe.
Others to come to mind are -
Fantazia in the Lerox warehouse in 94
Electronic Wilderness in 96 out at Mclaren Vale
James Holden upstairs at the old Minke in 2004 for one of the Fabric shows.
Strawberry Fields (can't remember the year) at St Pauls with Patrick Reid, Union Jack and Art of Trance.
Darren Emerson and Carl Cox show in one of the car park shows years back.
Ultraworld 3 at Lerox in 95
I know this is more than three but all were wicked nights.
best events of the past 12 months - fuck sticking to the rules !!
Zulu nation party at HQ - finally i got to see Lord Finesse
Easter Super Jam at viva - dope lineup and all acts killed it
Obese block Party at Viva - fucking brilliant night, everyone was superb and funkoars tore the stage to shreds
Back in the day parties - EF 2, OUAT @ port Adelaide warehouse, Hawtin @ young street car park, DJ A-Trak @ synagogue circa 97

2) We Love Sounds @ Shores '06 - my 1st day long electronic music extravaganza, flash, delta, k-o, patife, mampi swift...fkn dope
3) Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ The Gov - Karen O = best.female.rock.performer.ever.nuff said.

yeh dude absolutely piercing, loved the theatrical aspect of the show as well, never forget the opening as he built it up into diamonds
fuck yeah i said to many people after that show, love his music or hate it, you cannot front he is the ultimate entertainer
yeah werd, in the words of rakim as an mc he certainly knows how to 'move the crowd'....is there an inthemix review from that show at all? i had a half arsed search around but couldnt find anything

Gemini aka Spencer Kinsey played some incredible early-morning stuff at that party.

shame he's never made it back to Adelaide.

2005 Sunshine Jones from Dubtribe @ sugar.... 4 my Birthday party with losts of my friends from intersate & o/s would be only Adelide party that would be in my top five events anywhere having brought him out for the event i had high expectations & he claered that bar with a gold medal performance
Dirty House party at Uni to Close Fringe Festival HMC in fine form Universal Dust & Toy Death live
~1998 Massive Attack @ Thebbie... ahhh the cookies & the bass
Glastonbury 1992 is best ever event I have been to saturday night line up at nme stage had the orb happy mondays primal scream shamen with Andy Weatherall djing inbetween
& though that was the paek of the gestival at other times saw Blur, Television, The Fall, Curve, PJ Harvey, , James, The Breeders, Billy Bragg, Van Morrison, & Spiritualized,
this glastonbury is also source of my bigest disappointment at an event which was not knowing until afterwards underworld did one of their first live performances
.... from dirty.org
"At Glastonbury 1992, they camped out on the fringes of the festival with some like-minded collaborators and set up the Experimental Sound Field, an improvised, ever-mutating hybrid of DJing and live performance which lasted from noon till dawn. "That really was the blueprint for Underworld," says Karl. "We couldn't go back after that. And we'd still like to play for 18 hours." They may have become more concise but to this day Underworld don't use set lists."

Pulse....the Dom Polski shows when they we're running fortnightly...
Totally agree with you there michaela, I use to help set up these shows (mambos' at the glenelg SLSC, That underage gig out near west beach sailing club, the old lion shows, the freemasons place, I even remember doing PULSE' shows out at murry bridge) I use to love meeting people and watching the whole scene make something of itself.
I also thought that the Go - Imagineer parties over 4 weeks in the 1992 Fringe was also up there
Mr S, would have to agree there as well. I remember they had a sk8 ramp on the dance floor and as I was off chops and with sk8board. I proceded to make a fool of myself rolling up and jumping into ppl who were dancing.
in that list I would also have
Lenny Dee- (93...I think) at the Arkaba- it was weird as I used dj uzi (gary?) to get into the show (by getting a lift to the show from a underage gig and then by carrying his record box straight inside hehe)
Liquid NYE @ LeRox 1992/1993 (Dream Frequency live PA)
Jigsaw @ vision warehouse 1993
both wicked gigs but I would have to say the time I went to mcmahons for the "ELECTRIC COOLAID 24HR TEST" 24 hrs of dancing and frivolity heheh. Did mcmahons ever have statues on either side of the dj booth....please someone tell me there was.
