If you asked me who the most well recognised and respected DJ to come out of SA in the last 10 years was, I'd probably say HMC. But I don't live in Adelaide. So can some of you locals tell me the latest?

I think we're spoilt by having someone as talented as HMC playing in Adelaide up to 3 times a week.
I used to go reasonably often for a dance at Minke when he was there and loved the variety he dished up from disco-house to tech-house to electro.
Now he is at Mojo West. Has anyone heard him there on a Saturday night?
He seems to be a fairly private guy and doesn't promote himself anywhere as much as other Adelaide DJ's but he still has an amaznig reputation interstate and overseas among producers, DJ's and dance music fans.
He was meant to be playing in Melbourne on the Easter long weekend wit Wet Musik (Coyle & Digby) at an event appropriately called Phreakin but I don't know if it is still going ahead.

Beekayz,

Phreakin is still going ahead, but HMC doesn't appear to be on the bill (neither are will e tell or simon digby for that matter. Sydney's Sugar Ray is the headliner now. Here's a link to the what's on entry with full details http://www.inthemix.com.au/whatson/listevent.php?id=2482/

Actually I think I got two events confused.
There was going to be an event at the same venue as Phreakin will be held at (Room 680) on Anzac Day Eve (April 24).
That event was going to consist of Wet Muzik, Simon Coyle, HMC & Marco Bailey.
But the promoters wanted it to be an all-ages event so they changed the location as this couldn't be done at Room680

HMC is incredibly talented! This week's Dirty House party should be really good. It is a shame that this is the last one they are going to do for a while :(

HMC makes some of the most stomping music ever ... I remember going to Crown and Anchor when he played three weeks in the back room there with his Dirty House set (95 or beg. 96??) - truly brilliant nights :)

I'm from Adelaide, moved to Sydney in 95... I'm a big HMC fan, right back to the Metro days (daze!)...

I saw him a few weeks ago, when I was back in Adelaide for the 2002AD, and A2D events as part of the Fringe. He played at the Juice Records party at Minke Bar... which also featured (what I can remember from the flyer) DJ Bold, Pty Ltd, DCE, and Outpost Uncorporated all playing live! Unfortuantely commitments early in the morning the next day, and none of the live acts being on before 2.30am... ment I only got to see HMC's set... Which was an awesome set!! deep, hypnotic, funky, minimal techno at it's best, perfectly mixed and track selected (as always). I enjoyed it more than his set up here in Sydney at a party called Kaplunk last year... He's still in my top 5 fave techno DJ's of all time... He rocks!

I was looking forward to him (and outpost uncorporated) playing here in Sydney in a few weeks, but it's not happening now, as the venue it was to be at is now no more...

HMC gave Australia the sound of underground dance music, and he still excels.

Last time I saw him play a tech set was in Sydney late last year and it was dark, dirty, minimal, twisted but thankfully not fast. Evil sounds indeed.

His house style still rocks, from the most low slung sounds of Theo Parrish to sample driven grunged out Moodymann, he has the @!#$, is the @!#$, and I can say that is one of the most influential DJs I've ever shared a bill with.

You CAN say that he is one of the most influential
but you CAN'T say the word "@!#$". hmm..interesting ;)

:-0 You know all this talk about HMC is crazy. I am going to be bold when I say he is the most boring repeditive DJ ever. Why do people keep booking him and why doesn't he move smile or do something so I know he is alive when he plays? Just a question. I am not denying he is a very influential part of the Adelaide music scene but please don't bore me to tears.

Just a thought . . . Say no to HMC

I was there one of those nights down from Sydney and he fuggin rocked the place

Drag him around the country yes but dont try dragging him onto a plane

Betty Blue eat a D--- yeah I go to see a DJ to see what he dances like pfft WT BB

You know he might of rocked the place in 95-96, I have no doubt, but it is 2002. Its time to look into the future and not dwell in the past. The fact is HMC has nothing new to offer to anyone, but there are alot of peoples out there who do. I think it time for Hmc to take a much deserved break.

P.s. I dont go to watch a DJ dance but it would be good to know when a Dj is mixing that he is into the groove and not worried about the next cigarette he needs to smoke. The Dj is there to entertain he is a performer. Otherwise put on a mix CD and be done with it.

Just my thoughts: Lets keep it alive and fresh.

Each to their own... HMC has his place... :)
I think he is still one of the world premier Music makers...

bettyblue,

I hear you there but I guess it depends what you dig about hearing a dj - for me personally when cam is on point his track selection and mixing style is incredible.

dont know why he doesnt play more in mlb to be honest, they'd love him here..

dr wahwah:

sorry for the late reply - melbourne has plenty happening, room 680 is out in hawthorn and I've heard it can be a cool place esp. for internationals so dj garth would be worth checking out there.. liz millar and eddie mac at WOW I haven't checked out but I've heard they spin a good selection of house

also fabrik out in windsor on friday nights is good for house, garage and a bit of classic disco and saturday nights at honkytonks in duckboard place city for deep house action

you should post the question on the mlb forum if you havent already, people there will happily give you all the lowdown you need on other joints to check out

I have to disagree about SELLING OUT...

I will have to quote the infamous Matt Pearce he believes and I agree "working in a job your hate" is selling out...

I know for a fact the GT loves what he is doing and is enjoying his chosen career. If he were working Kmart checkout... he would have sold himself out for sure.

Good work Groove Terminator... I think he is one of SA best exports!!

Bettyblue... do you have no clue?

Your idea of a good night out is listening to Odyssey's rendition of Hoover Town.

Seriously, who do you rate?

Also, if you knew HMC you would understand his behaviour. He is the shy and retiring type who loves his music but his behaviour is low key. He keeps a low profile and I don't see anything wrong with that.

Yes, he chain smokes too. So what? Does he have to jump around with his hands in the air like Sydney's Nervous to get your attention.

Some people can never be satisfied... I got chastised when I played 'Seawolf' on the weekend and pumped my fist when the double time drums came in.

Doesn't matter what you do, some asshole is always on your back, ready to criticise you over something that has nothing to do with the music you out.

Look I just want to clear this up. There has been some agressive tones thrown towards me because I do not rate HMC as a Dj in 2002. I beleive each to there own if you dig cool. However I do not rate a DJ today because he was something 5 years ago. I respect them for the work they have done and the development of music they have encouraged, but some times DJ's think they can keep on playing to the end of time even if they need a break.

I don't excpect a DJ to dance around and throw fists in the air (if they choose to then thats cool, if its cool). I do think though that some DJ's forget that they are their to work (which should be enjoyable) show what you can do there with your music.

For example if you play a guitar don't just strum the strings every 5 minutes I will go to sleep. Play me some music.

Some excellent examples of fine musicians are:

Ben Sims
Carl Cox
Adam Beyer
Fatboy Slim
Cari Lekebusch
Adam Freeland

Just to name a few

Some overated DJ's:

HMC & Jeff Mills

Once again only my opinion.
Stay cool and keep the music alive.

Betty, you've got some great taste there,
but simply put, i'd like to see who you think is heaps better than HMC locally....there are a few that are up there, but he IS by far the best (not most versatile, but the best)

AndrewWilson

i just don't understand how anyone can call hmc over rated, even if you ignored everything he has done in the past (which is a hard thing to do) then he's still easily ranks as one of adelaide's best beat mixers.
his always smooth mixing and always impeccable music choice are my reasons why he'll remain one of my favourite dj's.
like any dj if you follow them to every gig you get bored of their sets after a while, but maybe it's you that needs a break from him.
adelaide being adelaide i'm sure that if any number of well known dj's were playing week in week out they too would be called overrated.

Thanks jason but not anymore :P,
the riverland had a dj comp a few months back with four entrants (I'm no longer living there so didn't go)

and one guy couldn't compete because he had one the heaven dj comp ( not that it was based on his skills but never mind that)

they had a party up there on saturday night with the likes of pab, runtough, josh, moore etc going up.

apparently the riverland has a thriving scene, quite scary really

well folks enjoy HMC while you can, apparenty he is moving to berlin.

If this is the case all I can say is "why not sooner?" To me its amazing the guy has stuck around as long as he has.

I would still rate Cam as one of the best DJs in the world. I don't think I have ever seen someone who can program better. I remember watching him with DJ Next many years ago and Next rating him as one of the best DJs he had seen (which I completely agreed with). Now this is comming from two hip hop DJs.......not an easy audience for a house / techno DJ to woo!!
Bettyblue, you're entitled to your view, but give me a HMC mixtape any day to listening to most of the monkeys playing out.
I really do feel spoilt having grown up in Adelaide listening to HMC develop as a DJ and a producer. Hey, I still got two copies of 100% Juice!!!
