I know most, if now all have a digital camera here.

So the questions are: what type of camera and what model do you owe?

I still shoot on good ol' 35mm, or occasionally on a modified polaroid.
But I would like a to get a cheap simple point n' click digi for random happy snaps......

I have a prosumer camera (non-slr but lots of manual setting etc), so I assume that's what you meant by semi-slr.

Just sold my Ixus 400, it was a great little camera.

Now I'm using a Canon S1 IS 3.2mp 10x zoom with image stabiliser with a 52mm lens adaptor, hoya UV filter, macro filter and I'm waiting a teleconvertor - all that for only around $900 and its a really fun versatile camera, I might upload some pics soon.

I have an old Sony Cybershot, DSC-P32 or something, only 3.2 mp and 5.0x digital zoom.
But it's cheap and I only need it for occasions, not a hardcore photographer.

Just a question. Does the Image Stabiliser actually work well? Or does the capability change between wide angle and telephoto?

Thinking of upgrading to one of the new slimmer ixus models..

Fusion - UV filters really do fark all, they're only good for protecting your lens.

Would be much better to purchase a circular polariser to stick on the front - does wonders with outdoor shots in bright sun.

good digital camera manufacturers (value for money, and decent features) would be Pentax, Nikon, Olympus and Casio.
Nikon's cameras are good value for money.
Pentax make some really compact cameras, part of the Optio series.
Casio eXilim is that really trendy, credit-card sized camera with nice zoom...but can give you some aberrations in your photos.
Sony is not bad, but their proprietary Memory Stick format would be pricey, though you can insert them in Clies, SonyEricsson mobile phones, some laptops, etc.

different models have differring issues. research !

Just a question. Does the Image Stabiliser actually work well? Or does the capability change between wide angle and telephoto?

It works beautifully. Obviously it doesnt have much work to do at wide-angle, but towards the telephoto end you can really see it working against your body movement.

For eg, I took this snap at 10 x zoom near the start of the harbour bridge from a moving car!

Are you sure you meant "FX" series? :)

And again it begs the question (and not necessarly aimed at you, Bracko :) ) just what defines "semi SLR"?

Is it the body shape? Like adding skirts and spoiler to transform a Hyundai Excel into a semi Sporty Luxury Racecar?
Yet, that doesn't alter the drivetrain under the hood/body.

Is it the cruddy LCD in the viewfinder that almost resembles the view of a 'through the lens' SLR?
Yet, doesn't every digital provide a 'through the lens' display.

Is it the advanced manual controls, lens and sensor quality?
Yet, these features can be found on some of the most "basic" of digital cameras,

Is "semi SLR" simply a misnomer?

"Prosumer" might be a better description than semi-SLR.

I've got a Canon Powershot S70 which is "prosumer" - mainly, I think, because I can do everything manually if and when I want to. It's a lovely piece of kit.

The term is "SLR-like" not "semi-SLR"

But really, even if a camera looks like an SLR it doesn't mean it's any good.

SLR is just a very old piece of technology that lets you look straight down the lens barrel, it doesn't add or detract from image quality.

I'm a Canon man myself, but you really can't go wrong with either a Canon EOS 400D/30D/5D, or a Nikon D80 or D200.

I've heard the Olympus E500 is alright as well, but I would stick to either the Canon or Nikon due to the ease of getting lenses/accessories, and good reputation.

If you buy either of them I really doubt you will be disappointed, and both will shit all over your Sony.

btw I wouldn't buy the Sony as the lenses are hideously expensive.

yeah from what i've been reading, canon is the way to go. but there are several different models which all sound good or i've seen amazing photos taken with them (400D, 350D, 30D, etc). i'm sure anything i get will shit all over my sony, i'd be bloody annoyed if it didn't lol. but yeah it's just i don't know how significant the differences are between the different models, or if certain models are better suited to different types of photography or anything like that.

The 350D is superseded so you can discount that one

The 30D is the best of the amateur Canons, the 400D is the entry level

The 400D is actually 10 megapixels to the 30D's 8, but that isnt a big issue as both will blow up to A3+ size easily.
The advantages of the 30D is that it has lower noise levels, faster burst shot mode, a magnesium chassis compared to the plastic 400D, is larger and as a result feels better in the hand, goes up to 3200 ISO compared to 1600, longer battery life, and has an LCD control display and an extra control wheel making it more intuitive to use.

None of them are particularly huge; but I think it is probably worth the extra

I am assuming you dont want to spend $4000 on a 5D, which comprehensively shits on both...

thanks a lot for the advice and explanation fat joe, that really helps :-D and yeah i definitely don't have 4 grand to spend, i wish i did.

sorry for hijacking the thread guys, but i have one more (probably retarded) query. what exactly would i be getting if i bought 'body only' vs a 'kit'? is this referring to whether or not it comes with a lens? if so, is the lens that comes with it any good or would i be better off getting a different one? or does this all mean something else entirely? </dslr n00b idiocy>

Good Evening or Morning!

Well, this is my first post here, I just arrived as a contributor as they say, so I naturally came straight to the photography section. I have a Nikon D200, as well as a fujifilm s9000, but there are alot more cameras out there, and in the end, its what feels good to you and is the best tool for taking the photos you want.

As for the above question about kit or no kit, it depends how much you want to spend. If you're going with something like a 400D, and you have a fair bit extra to spend on the lenses, then get the no kit and get a nice zoom that will cover the mid range, Im not sure what canon makes sorry, but I seem to remember a 24-105 zoom lens? That would be an excellent lens to start off your collection. So if you have the money, go for the no kit and get a better lens, its worth the money. If you cant spare the cash at the moment, get the kit lens and upgrade the lens down the track.

Just remember, if you start purchasing slr lenses, the price of the body of your camera is going to diminish rapidly against the price you will pay for good lenses. Hehe, NAS for me, CAS for others, SAS, OAS, PAS, FAS, they are all the same addiction.

Cya all round!

The kit lens which comes with the canon is the 18-55mm, which is very ordinary and not really worth having..

The 24-105mm is a very good lens, but very exxy ($1500 from memory), and as the 400D and 30D have a 1.6X focal multiplier due to the small sensors, you will have a 38.4mm focal length at the wide end, which really isn't wide enough

Probably your best bet is the 17-85mm image stabilisation lens, which is about $900, and comes as a kit with the 30D. It gives a 28mm wide end, and is a decent (not fantastic) quality lens. It works well as an all purpose lens due to the image stabiliser.

From there you can buy one of the 70-200mm lenses (which comes as an f4 and f2.8, image stabilised and non - stabilised versions) and/or the 10-22mm lens, and you will have a good range.

I have some experience with the canon 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM kit lens. At first, I was like, oookay - seems alright (I'm a novice here) - then I was extremely happy with its proficiencies - the IS works wonders if you are dealing with things that are not moving and you want to take hand-held long exposures. I took a 1 second photo of graffiti at night and it came out amazingly sharp. And I'm addicted to USM - it isn't about the silence, it is about being able to use AF and MF at the same time without concern about breaking the motor. This may be a mileage may vary sort of thing, but I'm going to go for a USM lens over another option unless I have a very, very good reason not to.

But, there are some major deficiencies. I'm inexperienced, so take this with a grain of salt - but I'm becoming very frustrated with the sharpness when it comes to low-light or tightly framed images. And it really can't focus very close. It got to the point where I was bound and determined to purchase the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM and sell the kit lens. I was all about it, with the only reservation that I'm seriously looking at eventually moving up to a full frame, and of course the EF-S would become useless on that camera. That point nagged at me enough that I put the decision on the back burner.

And I'm glad I did. After going on a road trip down the Great Ocean road, taking wide-ish angle photos with plenty of light, having the freedom to zoom a little for better framing, I'm so happy with this lens. I've decided to keep it even though they are still fetching about what I paid new, used on ebay. Of course, it isn't going to do everything you need and it has a lot of deficiencies, but it is a damn nice lens for the price and a great as they say "walking around" lens.

That said, I've heard aweful things about the 18-55 kit, so I would seriously think about not getting that one. And as people have said - if you have the money and you love photography, absolutley go for a better zoom. Heh, this post is getting long but I have to point out the EF 24-70 f2.8L as an option. That was the one I was going to 'upgrade' to, buying a wide prime since when I'm shooting wide, I'm shooting wide. However, I've decided that although it is a damn nice lens - I'm going to make the first expensive purchase be for the 70-200 f2.8 because since they haven't put the IS into the lower line, and I assume they will (they started with using IS on the tele zooms in the L series, I'm thinking they wanted to make sure they had it right in the EF-S series before they put the L branding on it), I'll get the better walking around lens then. For lowlight, I'll get a fast wide prime, I have a fast 60mm prime, and like I said, the longer zoom for those times when I'm farther away - but I strongly reccomend IS if you are ever thinking about taking pictures with people dancing around you on wood floors ;-)

That was longer than I had meant it to be.
