At this years dance music awards... who do you think should be added?

a_618allstarr
22-Mar-02, 12:21pm
Does it really matter anymore? Or have they shaped up?

Beekayz
22-Mar-02, 12:30pm
I know that Brendon was added last year.
Who else is already a member?

PaulHamon
22-Mar-02, 01:17pm
HMC
John Pike

Josh?
Tim?

Charlie17
22-Mar-02, 02:15pm
Come on Beekayz, thought you had your finger on the pulse *wink*
Tim and Josh ARE in the SA Hall of fame (confirming the question marks).
I don't know...
What's Hall of fame based on??
Achievements or popularity??
Can a venue be given Hall of fame status??
Radio Station??
Or is it just people??

PaulHamon
22-Mar-02, 02:31pm
Current List:

Brendon
HMC
John Pike
Josh
Tim

I know there is one more? From the first year? ULTRA old school...

I know HMC, Tim and Josh were put in because they kept winning in there respective catagory for several years... not allowing any others a chance...

I think currently it's reserve for people...

a_618allstarr
22-Mar-02, 02:46pm
but why did Josh keep winning it?

She's been around, but still waiting..

Thoughts for others to be inducted...

Damien "Dames" Donato
Georgie Knight

A venue could not receive

a_618allstarr
22-Mar-02, 02:49pm
oops.. A venue could not recieve a Hall of Fame reward.

Also... others maybe.... Madcap and Gu$.

Doing a lot for a long time.

I just found out Madcap is engaged to my girlfriend's flatmates girlfriends best friend.

Got that. :P

Charlie17
22-Mar-02, 02:58pm
Ok so now that the venue issue is cleared up... and congrats to madcap...

what's it based on??

Achievement, popularity or both??

a_618allstarr
22-Mar-02, 03:40pm
Both I say.

There are plenty of DJs who are popular but haven't done anything for the scene. It's the ones who put back in and are truly dedicated to the industry. As without those types of peoples, you wouldn't have a scene.

That's why I've mentioned such people as Dames, Derek, Angus and Georgie.

Dames as label manager for Juice Records, and working his ass off to get Australia noticed as a techno producing country, and through that helping Cam, Paddee, Theo, Bold, DCE etc.. realising their dreams of releasing wax.

Derek for his devout stand for the Adelaide hip-hop nation. Enough said.

Angu$, from hip-hop to house to hardcore, been around a year and a day, and I'm sure there's a lot of the current new blood in Adelaide who wouldn't have been interested in the music but saw him doing his thing at a Heaven Thursday and helped them to crossover.

Georgie, for providing the only radio conduit for electronic music in the early 90s and continiuing it on. For giving new artists the ability to air their music. For giving DJs air time to educate the listeners. For being the only channel (apart from The Core and flyers in Central Station) that people could find out about dance parties an the like and for her true love and patronage of the music, pushing out the sounds of Detroit and Chicago house and techno.

Yes, Madcap is engaged to the lovely Joanna :)

It would be a timely year for him to be added to Adelaide's famous hall for all the work he has done for our hip-hop scene over the last 10 years. believe he has now lost his enthusiasm for playing live, nice way to bow out & move on in holy matrimony

PaulHamon
22-Mar-02, 04:13pm
Angu$ would be a good call... but he has boycotted the event since the beginning.. I think??

Dames is a good call...

Mr S
22-Mar-02, 05:01pm
Yeah I agree with the recent suggetsions of who should win this year
The award should be exactly that.. someone who has made a mark on shaping the Adelaide dance scene, not just someone who plays other peoples music.

Michaela
22-Mar-02, 05:10pm
I agree MrS. It should be someone who has made a difference to the dance community and/or industry.

Perhaps Paul Hodder would be a good choice.

PaulHamon
22-Mar-02, 10:35pm
The fellow that walks down the mall with the boot and tights :)

Mr S
23-Mar-02, 01:19pm
That would be Johnny!

Local legend and huge cult figure around the globe
There is even a website dedicated to him

PaulHamon
23-Mar-02, 05:52pm
Good friend of yours?

marcus
23-Mar-02, 06:32pm
Odyssey?

PaulHamon
24-Mar-02, 02:50am
I think I've seen oddy in the mall with tights and sexy boots...

thane
24-Mar-02, 06:09pm
how about John Chalmers?

Or Tony Caraccia?

Why cant Onion magazine be put in the hall of fame, its Adelaide's nite life bible and deserves more credit that it gets.

Whats the Jonny web address?

MrToastE

for naked pics of oddy....

PaulHamon
25-Mar-02, 10:41am
I think Tony would be a good candidate, but considering he runs the show.. I don't think it will happen!

a_618allstarr
25-Mar-02, 11:42am
Paul.. you can't be serious.

If Odyssey was to be voted... then what about those who were doing the same thing as he does just at the beginning of the 90s like MPK.

Not quite enough IMHO.

thane
25-Mar-02, 01:25pm
but the fact that he runs the show is just another reason why he should

PaulHamon
25-Mar-02, 01:50pm
I'm serious about Tony... he has been active in the scene for the past 15 years... has done a great deal for it...

I can think of only one reason what he should not... and we all know hwat that is...

phuqmeimfamous
25-Mar-02, 02:45pm
There's a few more I can say (they aren't related to the one already mentioned), but they are still very bad). I think I know where a_618 is coming from.

thane
26-Mar-02, 01:27pm
without Tony, this scene would have fallen apart years ago. The amount of effort he has put into dance music here in Adelaide should not go un noticed. So we all have bad luck from time to time, big deal, why should a few mistermena's out way the good?

a_618allstarr
26-Mar-02, 03:29pm
God if you only knew the half of it.

We're not talking about misdemeanours.

He helped alot, but he was one part of the wheel. There were a lot of people who were involved and to say 'without Tony' is ridiculous.

PaulHamon
26-Mar-02, 06:05pm
I think the Reelax might get moved into the Hall of Fame considering he has won the past 2 years!

Got to give the less 'good looking' DJs a go :)

oddy
26-Mar-02, 07:33pm
i think MPK or Noddy deserve it .. especially if Tim and Josh can win it ..

Royal
27-Mar-02, 11:20am
But just because you have won it for the past 2 years doesn't mean you get to go to the hall of fame. What was he doing 5 years ago? Pffft.

It's a sham now anyway... I don't hold much value in it.

PaulHamon
27-Mar-02, 11:37am
I'd like to see an actual national awards? would be good!

oddy
27-Mar-02, 12:54pm
there's already a national dance music awards .. run by sydneysiders

PaulHamon
27-Mar-02, 01:03pm
Hardy national :) DMA pertends to be national.. i don't think it REALY is..

Royal
27-Mar-02, 03:21pm
Didn't Onion run voting slips in its magazine.

The problem is that Sydney will always win through because of population.

If they came up with a fair way of doing it would be fine.

Perhaps, the votes for each nomination get divided by the population of a city.

Maybe not, but Sydney has a population somewhere around the 4 million mark, Adelaide at over 1 million; of course they are going to have a higher number of votes per category.

PaulHamon
27-Mar-02, 03:53pm
I think the votes should be waited per head.... I would say take the top 3 DJs for each state and weight the votes eg: per head on populaiton in each city.

PaulHamon
27-Mar-02, 04:16pm
Weighted: (this is how much each vote from respective city could be worth based on population)

Sydney 1.0
Melbourne 1.2
Brisbane 2.6
Perth 3.0
Adelaide 3.5
Hobart 19.2
Canberra 12.4

a_sixunhuit
27-Mar-02, 04:53pm
Now how do we apply the figures.

Does a vote from SA get have a multiplier of 3.5. Or do DJs from Adelaide get their tally multiplied by 3.5.

I would say the former, as it's quite possibly for someone in Adelaide to vote for say Kazu Kimura as their fave Australian DJ.

We would need to run a test case, perhaps gathering all the data from the top 20 dj competition from last year and running this method of distributing votes fairly across it.

Would have some interesting results.

PaulHamon
27-Mar-02, 04:58pm
Yep... number 1 :)

CandleStickMakr
27-Mar-02, 09:59pm

If it's the Ian I think you mean he is now working in the basement (secondhand section) of Big Star Rundle St.
He as doing Pop at Stix a while back.
But more recently set up shop at Jimmy Rowes (used to be called Heritage) with night called Stereo (also pop music) but I don't think that did too well & died after a month or two.

CandleStickMakr

a_sixunhuit
28-Mar-02, 02:21pm
Speaking of Core - ACb and Stilgherrian. I did see Stil had a website up for a while, but it is frozen - http://contour.prussia.net/archiv/ps002/home.html

Was it the little pink bear, and the cartoon Le Rex..

PaulHamon

How about Pauly Fairburn......first DJ I ever saw pull the needle of the wrong record and not realise for a minute or so because they were so mashed!!

Go the disco biscuit shop at the LeRox DJ box.

a_sixunhuit
02-Apr-02, 10:14am
Fairburn.... ahhh dear. :)

Mr S
02-Apr-02, 12:51pm
Paul Fairburn deserves nothing but his head beaten after ripping my studio off and fleeing the country with many people after him. He is nothing but a scammer to many people now (even though he was a major part of the early 90's Adelaide scene).
Actually, if everyone did all vote for him, it would be interesting to see if he came back to get the award... I DON'T THINK SO!

PaulHamon
02-Apr-02, 04:50pm
I thought that Fairburn was at the bottom of a river??

davecode
02-Apr-02, 08:48pm
I've heard several stories including the Thames one. Does anyone know what actually happened to him??

PaulHamon
03-Apr-02, 12:15pm
I'm happy believing the river story..
Sounds good to me!

Mr S
03-Apr-02, 01:44pm
Who cares??... If anything did happened to him, he probably deserved it anyway after what he did here

He one of Adelaide's biggest Dance exports...

What do you think?

You wonder why they would choose a long weekend? considering just about everyone has to work in one way or another the day before??

I'm hoping to make it this year!!

Didn't he sell out and go commercial? XD

Seriously though, I did think of you or MPK. Hell, seems like MPK has consistently been a big part of the adelaide scene since forever. He will have to get it sometime, why not this time? :)

davecode
27-Apr-02, 02:33am
Well not sure if has already been made part of the hall of fame or not, but GT should be in there. Not a big fan of what he's doing now, but watching him in the 1990 DMC kind of inspired me to be a DJ. Brendon should be in there also and Paul Hodder!!!
Another person who has done alot is Madcap! He did alot for hip hop in SA and deserves the props for that! It is about time people involved in things other than house and more commerical dance music got respect in these awards. Repertoire was the longest runnng hip hop night in Australia at the time, but never got nominated for anything?
