well the pre-season is now officially underway.. and the real stuff starting in less than a month.

so far the biggest things to look out for will be how much Alex Smith and the 49ers can turn around last years 2-14 record, how well Big Ben can follow up an amazing rookie season, and of course if the Patriots can do it again.

thankfully my Rams have some new people in the gaps they missed last year - and are supposedly looking again like "the greatest show on turf" in training. im expecting breakthrough years for QB Bulger and RB Jackson.

Carn Falcons and Broncs.

Falcons big question is whether vick can step up and learnt to throw. If he learns to throw god help the NFC.

I guess the broncos 2 big questions are :
1- can jerry rice be any help?
2- will they improve the run ?

any1 watch the international bowl or watever that international NFL display is?
it was in Tokyo on saturday apparently (Indy v. Atlanta)

Broncos have always had a steady running game, and they had a well above average one last year. Just because they're not freakishly good on the run; as they have been in years gone by with the likes of Davis etc out, they definately have the most disciplined front-four and running execution IMHO.... Plummer going to Rice...mmm...very interesting to say the least, but personally I think Rice should retire before he seriously injures himself.

Aristotle
09-Aug-05, 02:28pm
Jerry Rice is STILL playing??

You gotta be joking, I remember his combination with Montana and then Steve Young beginning like 15 years ago ......... and he was an already established WR at the time ..... he is STILL playing? Boggles the mind .... he must be a frail old man by now seriously ........

SoulWhiteMan
09-Aug-05, 03:09pm
nah man, he is in top shape; but I'm just concerned that playing sport for thirty years (hes about 40 now) will have some effect on joints/bones etc, and that eventually something will "give way" and may cause longer term damage than if he just retired now.

Aristotle
09-Aug-05, 03:13pm
How he manages to do that at the age of 40 is beyond me ......

Is he still racking up crazy yards, or has he gone into a more sheltered role, i.e. making 1 reception every 2 games, appaering for 2 or 3 plays per game?

innA
09-Aug-05, 03:48pm
Rice got traded to the Seahawks last year and played very limited minutes.. they really needed him too as the Seattle receivers couldn't catch the balls that mattered.

Did someone mention NFL?

I think it's time for me to start posting again.

If Denver's front four can just play decently the secondary will keep us in contention and I don't think there is any need to worry about the offense while Mike Shanahan is in control.

SoulWhiteMan
10-Aug-05, 12:09am
Decently, I'm happy with the denver front four: notice how a lot of the backs, once traded, no longer have their "glory days" that they had at denver?
Not to foget, we did make the playoffs last year.

GO DENVER!!!!!!!

Denver's success in the running game is 90% due to the system. Who's heard of Olandis Gary since he left? I think Reuben Droughns is going to turn out the same.
But by front four I meant the defensive line. We don't have much experience in that regard because they keep letting the up and comers such as Bertrand Berry and Reggie Hayward leave

It's too early to start thinking how teams will do. Need to wait until one week before kickoff of the new season. Then we'll see who's been cut/ traded/ contender/ pretender/ injured.

Big question: how well does Ricky Williams do this year?

Go the Broncos! I believe that they will get their running game going again this year. As people have already said, backs leave the broncos and tend to disappear into obscurity. It's all about good coaching and a good system in Denver.

I have to say though, when I read that Jerry Rice had signed with the Broncos I was a bit shocked. After seeing so many Denver dreams crushed by him playing with either the 49ers or the Raiders I just never thought I would see the day he was in a Broncos uniform.

I think give the poor guy a break. I've seen interviews with him on "news" channels and even Oprah, not the usual Jock sports desks. He is a very insular, shy person: that's why he used to wear his helmet (with the sun visor) ALL THE TIME for on the field interviews. Heck, even when I was playing, running track 3 times a week, and in the gym for four, I would love catching up with my bogan mates and hitting the trees in the off season....
How funny was it he went to a log cabin in "GRASS VALLEY" in california, where he "took long walks, practiced guitar and played playstation most of the time"

Yeah i think so too , everyone grabbed the bigger name QBs like Manning,McNabb and Caulpepper so i grabbed the RBs & WRs and drafted QBs who i think will thrive but flying just a touch under the radar.I think Bulger is going to have a monster year as well as Kerry Collins now that theyve brought in Moss ..
The raiders have some very promising WR's, Moss, Curry and is the other one jerry porter? Either way they have three good guys. However I just can't see their defense stepping up and they have no running game

I watched the New Orleans v Minnesota game last night and Minnesota were awesome.

Their quarter back had a blinder, passing for some great touchdowns and scrambling his arse out of trouble when needed.

However, New Orleans handed the game to them on a plate by playing one of the worst offensive games I have watched in a long time. They were bereft of ideas and their execution on plays was woeful.

I'm a bit undecided on it, been playing on All-Pro and I'm finding that the computers offence is crappy, I'd never held it to less than 7 and now I've done it twice in four games. Also passing is too hard while running is too easy. meh

Still, GO BRONCOS

I just watched an amazing 4th quarter between Carolina and Green Bay.

Green Bay were 19 points down and made 2 touch downs, plus two converted field goal passes for additional 2 points on each play to bring themselves to within a field goal. Brett Favre was amazing on both touch down drives after being a shadow of his former self for much of the game.

However Carolina wound the last two minutes down to escape narrow winners.

Once again, Fox Sports seem to be playing with my mind when it comes to showing highlights of the NFL.

The week just gone, there was a 3 hour show on the Monday highlighting two games and starting at 9.30pm.

Next week it's a 1 and a half hour show starting at 9.30 again, but with Baseball taking up the time allocated to an additional game this week.

The week after, the game will be shown on a Tuesday at 3am, the week after on a Wednesday at 1am and the week after on a Tuesday or Wednesday at a time to be dreamt up by whatever fuckwit at Fox Sports has their rag on that week and is feeling particularily malicious.

FOR FUCKS SAKE. I WISH THEY'D JUST PICK A FUCKING TIME AND STOP MESSING AROUND WITH THINGS.

BASTARDS.

i really like how Fox edit down their replays.. making them 60-90 mins per game - where as ESPN continue to show 3+ hours of the same game that night!

sure 3 hours is fine if it is live, but replays are much better at half the time, especially for audiences not accustomed to the tedious stop/start of the NFL.

I have to agree with you. The coverage on ESPN is fucking woeful. It's advertising interrupted with the odd bit of football. Terrible. The Fox coverage is far superior. However, I really wish that they'd dedicate one evening a week to covering the game and showing it at a regular time.

They should dedicated 3 hours a week to show 2 games, plus the scoring highlights and a news wrap up of the big stories and show it at the SAME TIME EVERY WEEK.

This weeks highlights were shown this afternoon between 3 and 5 pm. Looking through the Foxtel Magazine, the highlights next week are at 3am or some such rubbish. Last week they were at 9pm. CAN WE PLEASE HAVE SOME FORM ON CONTINUITY. Otherwise people like me who truly enjoy watching the highlights wont bother watching it at all and thats a real shame.

Urrgh another dissapointing showing by the Jets...27-14 loss to the Falcons. Any other suffering Jets fans on itm?
I wouldn't say that I was a Jets fan per se but they are one of the teams that I would cheer for over some of the other fuckwits in the NFL.

My teams would be Jets, Raiders, 49'ers, Packers.

The teams I cant stomach would be the Redskins, Giants, Cowboys, Steelers and Bears.

Nice choice of hated teams there!

Just watched the Detroit Lions put away the Arizona Cardinals. Quite an entertaining game. 29-21.

Now watching the Seattle Seahawks vs St Louis Rams. Yay for Fox Sports double headers. I need more of this.

(Watching show I taped last night)

Maybe, but Denver has played well, I think that we might be able to beat them in a playoff game this year...... maybe

if Denver can get home field advantage throughout the playoffs they could go all the way!

Yeah they have a pretty awesome home record, something like three losses in the last four years, and so far this year we're undefeated at home.
It'll be interesting to see Indy to play a quality team this week becaause their schedule has been somewhat soft so far

Good to see the Broncos get another win on the weekend although it looks like the Jets are pretty horrid this year so it doesn't count for too much.

Broncos have been playing very consistantly but I don't know if they can beat Indianapolis

Vince Young is amazing!!!

And back to the NFL how solid are all the AFC playoff qualifiers this year!!!

I saw about half of it and I can't say that I was that impressed with Vince Young. I think he has potential but I think he has a long way to go before he is an NFL star, his passing really didn't look that good.

On a matter I would like to say congratulations to myself, ITM NFL tipping comp champion for three years in a row now :)

I reckon the Broncos can knock of the Pats in the second round of the playoffs but I don't think that we'll be able to beat Indy

No. They closed out the regular season with 6 straight wins

Will be interesting to see how far the Broncos can go, they have certainly been playing some good football lately. I don't think we can beat the colts either but you never know what can happen in finals football. I'll never forget the Jaguars beating us in the finals back in 97 or 98, it was a complete upset and I was absolutely gutted. It could happen again!
I've only been following NFL since about 2001 but I've heard plenty of stories about how shocked people were with that loss. I think Denver should be able to knock the Pats of next week but I still don't know how we will go v Indy

OMFG I can't believe the colts lost. What makes it much much is that I'm getting on a plane to london next sunday morning and will miss the game. Hopefully I will be able to find the superbowl somewhere in Austria and watch the Broncos smash someone.

Right, I'm not 100% sure I understand how the play offs work, although I think I have it.

Are Washington, Indianapolis, Chicago and New England all out, leaving just Seattle, Carolina, Pittsburgh and Denver in the running?

If thats the case, I take it that Pittsburgh and Denver are playing for the AFC and Carolina and Seattle are playing for the NFC with the winners of each playing in the Superbowl final?

If thats the case, I cant see why Seattle or Carolina cant take Pittsburgh or Denver on. I reckon the Seahawks have looked pretty decent this season, and Carolina can take on anyone on their day.

NFC for the win :P

The seahawks had pretty much the easiest schedule of any team in the playoffs, I would much rather the Broncos play them than the panthers. The panthers are good, but foster broke his ankle and Champ Bailey can cover steve smith so I don't know how much use delholme will be.
