View Full Version : East End vs West End
With many new venues sprouting up in the West End, and some in turn relocating there from the east end, what impact has it had on clubbing and bar hopping?
Has Hindley St (between Morphett and the Mall) seen an improvement? Is it still a place you'd be wary of venturing to (in comparison of Rundle St)?
Is Rundle St now the new Hindley St?
Thoughts?
i spend all my time in the west end these days, the east end is only good for coffee etc in my opinion...
i mean look at the west end, u got the grace emily, the cumby, garage, red room, minke, savvy... rise (which i have never been to so can't comment)
it's booming! and since i am building a house in the west end, i'm cheerin :)

Everything seems to be in HINDLEY STREET WEST...
Which actually does not exist according to ADELAIDE CITY COUNCIL...

@!#$...
Regines until about 91 or 92
Disco
Then it changed all over the place.. they got rid of the sunken disco light floor (big mistake)
G.A.Y. was when it was run by Steve Hooper.
Oh, it's been many a name.

"Has Hindley St (between Morphett and the Mall) seen an improvement?"
Tapas is now located on that stretch but near the Morphett St corner ...
if you looked at a map where all the bars/clubs Ezz names are (plus a few more, Bar on Gouger, Mojo West, Cargo, Worldsend, Supermild etc) you see it is perfect for walking, it all surrounds Light Square.
These heels have walked the walk many a times throughout a very long night! ;)

rundle street hasn't changed that much it's lost tapas but that is about it, Q bar, the austral the exeter and the like are all still there, there is still a heap of cafe's and the like. But to me rundle street lost most of it's appeal along time before the west end became popular, mind you for a few quiet drinks the relatively recent upgrades to the botanic make it worthwhile for a stopover.
there is an absolute stack of new small venues opening up in the west end but few are on hindley between morphett st and king william. Only two spring to mind Tapas and i believe the new mile high flying club (which has a whole heap of aeroplane seats throughout apparently)
I guess at a stretch you could say minke is there too but the entrance is at the back.
If you cross over morphett even the baron townhouse has had a couple of shows on the pool deck.
further along hindley there is the moskva vodka bar behind the old bailetti’s store then you have the old yiros place next to supermild that is now an art gallery-cum- bar then super mild followed by worlds end then next on that side would be mojo west which was the old beans bar then something else beginning with e but now with some paint and a few new couches it actually looks quite cool then there is the new pool hall behind maccas and heaven although I’ve never been as it seems to filled with kids.
Then crossing back over the road there is cargo which has always had the funk the rest of these newer pubs and clubs are trying to emulate, the old club de paris, club e etc is now a comedy club. Then the old ko club (from memory) is now the enigma bar after other failed ventures.
Then you’ve got to skip up a street to currie for jimmy rowes (formally the heritage now being run by john pike) keep walking past rise on the right and then at waymouth straight ahead you’ve got garage (I believe being run by the old q bar people) to the left you’ve got the red room (in and above the old chianti restaurant) and then just past stormy’s in the old raglans pub is savvy a new bar with plenty of room to dance out the back. If you turned right at waymouth you’ve got the cumberland arms on the left and the grace emily on the right and that’s about all I can think of in the west end but give it another month and I am sure there will be five more.
Tapas is now at the old Chinese restaurant near the corner there. Have to check it out when I return and reclaim my post as part of the furniture. :)

yeah i know it says that further into the post, but it is about the only change on rundle street except for more housing and a new belgian beer bar on a side street near ottomans.
i think the morphett to king william section of hindley will take a while to change but it is definitely beginning to happen, less cars and less strip clubs would help.
and i'm still waiting for someone to try something in the old big ticket venue "can all the people from bus 87 please leave now as we are on the way to lennies" :)
It was once Irish pubs now Belgian beer bars.. . we had one open in Sydney last year.
Hmm.. I reckon Scotty Marshall could do some serious damage! :)

Savvy is the old inzone which was aparently flooded out by the vindictive queen who ran the gym upstairs who was pissed at being locked out for not paying rent
Raglans is still there and looks pretty much the same
Anyone been to the recnbtly opened Kava bar?
AndrewWilson

shows you how much i paid attention and how often i've been to raglans :)
i presume you mean the kava hut on hindley?? yeah i've been in but it's no bar it just sells kava which i believe is a fijian <sp?> drink that apparently is quite potent. have heard stories of it paralysing the legs (for a while)after excess consumption and apparently should not be mixed with alcohol.
it seemed to send me a bit loopy for 20 mins but i had already consumed quite a large amount of alcohol by that stage. there would only be room for about 20 people max in the room.
it's still legal in oz at the moment although ui think there was an article in the sunday mail not that long ago suggesting it should be banned, i guess in many ways it similar to guarana
except guarana gives you a bit of a kick and kava sends your body to sleep. Is great to have a chat and a spliff to, but no good if your up for a big night - you won't want to do anything except chill after a few kavas. Ckeck it out tho, the owner is really mellow and will let you have a crack on the bongos if you can keep a beat. Good clean relaxing fun.
Cumby to Savy's to red room to rise - a damn good night with very little walking. Bring on light sqaure and the west end!
the ultimate way to end a hectic week in Adelaide, if its at all possible to have a hectic week in Adl-
2 to 3 mugs of kava, followed by 1 hour sports massage (by sexy female student)at the SA Health Ed centre on currie street. Total cost= $30, benefit= total relaxtion.....yeh, perhaps a spliff after to top it off....haaaaaa
all on the west side
ps rise is a HOLE!... haven for unsophisticated drugged out morons who like to stare at each other
Aptly put, Amilne :offchops:

Well , i dont think you could call Rise a hole now , not after the renovations & upgraded door policys being implemented .
Check out the pics as soon as i get them into Paul Hamon
Rise had its second birthday on saturday night/sunday morning & the crowd was friendly & clean , masses of girls & the work that was put into the venue over the last week has really made it a club for the future , music policy was mainly house which made it a more educated crowd , not the "doof doof" raver drug crowd . i hope now that Rise will again be looked at as a serious contender in the adelaide club scene & big congratulatins to Rob & the crew for a crazy weekend .
Fair enough, Andrew ... I guess it's one of those things people will have to check out for themselves :)

Welcome Brett
I'm looking forward to hearing your Back To Mine set at Mojo West in a few weeks time :)
apology for my previous prejudice comments towards the patrons of Rise;
good to hear the image has been revamped, will chek
yep,
rundle street is the new (old) hindley st
full of pissed up fuckwits travelling in packs (men and women) harrassing anyone who walks past, and of course the cruisers who all seem to think that we all LOVE their shit air & noise polluting cars AND their dubious tastes for commercial dance that pumps out the windows as much as they do.
whinge
too many manafactured theme bars (belgian, elephant&w etc), its just so embarassingly crap at night.
how long before the west end turns the same way???!

I believe that the West End has definitely picked up with the opening/relocation of some great clubs and pubs however, unfortunately for Hindley street, the stigma that has lingered for a long time is making life difficult for clubs/pubs, their owners and of course patrons.
I think it will take a long time to educate people that it is "ok" to go clubbing/pubbing down Hindley Street. Being a female, I hate parking the car down one of the dodgy side streets! Atleast with Rundle street you felt safe if you were leaving a club at 3 or 4am!
Hopefully time will heal all wounds and the WestEnd WILL BE the place to party! The Clubs and Pubs in that area are fantastic and are great for Adelaide. We need a larger variety of venues to suit all tastes and I believe that we are starting to gain some very enviable venues!! Go Adelaide!

I can remember back in 1992/1993,
when LeRox was pumping,
Disco (the first time round) was packed and generally...
Control was happening...
and Heavn had just opened with Prodigy and Dream Frequency...
Pently of stuff happen down town at the West End!

Paul - you are really showing your age there!!
Yes - very good point. The West End has been going off for a long time and I am happy to say that I enjoy Friday and Saturday (and even Sunday nights!) down that end of town.
U have to agree that the ambience in the West End has definitely improved though. Give me a hundred clubbers over a hundred pub goers any day!!
And I guess at the end of the day you are going to get dickheads in what ever part of the city you go! Definitely happy with the new and improved West End.
bahhahaha - cmon, what's wrong with a bit of elephant and wheelbarrow???
joking, joking :P

Hey! Don't get me wrong, Pubs are great in small doses (but the elephant and wheelbarrow - c'mon!!) Each to their own!!
PS - do I ever shut up? Never!

I'm not a pub person, I'd much rather a restaurant or club!

I think that the East has just settled more into a dining area and is a nice place to start a night for a meal & a few drinks.
The Exeter & Austral as well as the ever funky Rhino room should be recognised for still promoting great bands and acts that keep the punters happy. I'm not into commercial cheese or meat markets so don't really go to Church or Stag.
The West just has a bit more life and art in it now. It has definitely been a fairly funky place to hang out for a few years but has received a bit more attention of late. I just find it easier to be casual and comfortable that end of town, it's a little less pretentious.
My 2c, and first post, so hello everyone!!

I think licencing has forced the East End down that path, with all the residintial house down their now. They don't want to much late night activity!

Toucan as well... might have been a bit earlier, but Le Rox, Disco (Regines and what ever you wanted to call it....), and Control were all rocking it even earlier. Beans as well with an occaisional night, and even certain (very select nights) nights at Mars (yeah, so it was a gay club, but occaisionally it had a decent night - god even I played there in 97 I think!)
Also, the old Front Page location, Proscenium.... hmm anything else?
