View Full Version : Best clubs in Canberra
Hi there everyone, I have just registered on this site. I am from England and I am planning a trip to Australia at the end of the year. I was wondering if you guys could recommend any good clubs to visit in Canberra? I like hard house/hard trance and tribal underground stuff. All suggestions are welcome and if you could supply me with websites, that would be grest so that I could check to see who's playing and when.
Thanks alot.

Well.....
OK - The major clubs/nights that are worth going to are as follows.
Club Habana - (Manuka) - http://www.clubhabana.com.au/. Basically the best promoted and most popular club in Canberra for good dance music (unless you want to try some of the delightful meat-markets in Civic). The most regular nights is Melt each Saturday which serves up a mixture of house, hard house, progressive and breaks. For progressive there's the monthly State, for harder house junkies there's the occasional Flying High Parties, while Friction supplies a nice housey quota along with beats/breaks. Recent guests to Habana have included Steve Lawler and Adam Freeland, with Freq Nasty and Midfield General coming soon.
Lot 33 (Kingston) - Very swishy lounge bar with a weekly Sunday night ('Any Given Sunday' ) to help recover from the night before.
Gypsy Bar (Civic) - http://www.gypsy.com.au/ - Venue for live bands that occasionly has the odd club night. Recent visitors have included Kasey Taylor (deep prog house), and Californian hip-hop crew Ugly Duckling, while the bar regularly has nights with live electronic acts.
Babylon - (Civic) - Although not reknowned for its atmosphere, Babylon does have one of the best sound systems in town, and recent nights such as Frenetic 1, and the Fang parties, have put the joints' speakers to the test.
Insomnia (Civic) - This is the club that had one of the guys from Hybrid play in its first month of business, and has gone downhill from there (just kidding!). Pretty good layout, although it is more of a place to find a prospective 'bed-buddy' than quality dance. But, cheap drink nights mean the punters keep coming back....
ANU Bar - (Civic) - It's a bar Jim, but not as we know it. Recent 'graffiti' contests have put a few storm clouds over the venues future for dance parties, but the bar has hosted some choice events over the past 18 months including Lee from the Plump DJs, Passion 1 (hard house extravaganza), and upcoming shows from the Gatecrasher crew and Nick Warren.
Thats probably six clubs that you'd want to check out in Canberra. Unfortunately most of them try to cater for as wide a market as possible (hey, we're a city of 300, 000 or so - you can't please everyone!) so styles vary. To get around this, here are a few sites to help you plan your Canberra trip in advance.
Sketchy Crew - www.sketchycrew.com - Damn fine site for finding out whats happening each weekend. Shouts out to ya Sketchy Bill.
Spraci - www.spraci.net/canberra - 'Heated' discussion board by day, wasteland by night, this is still the original place to find out the goss in Canberra's dance scene. Quite a few Dj's post here, so you'll find out the info straight from the horse's.......um, saddlebag?
In The Mix - www.inthemix.com.au - Oh, wait, you already know that....heh heh! Would I be biased in saying it's the best dance music site in Australia? (Maybe!)
That should help you out.

nice summary mr funky. i'd be prepared to be a little disappointed though if your coming from the uk to club in canberra. it'd be a bit like being a liverpool fan and coming to watch the cosmos. quaint, its own inheriant charm but not quite the same thing.

hhaha yeah agreed bennybee hehehehe
Also check out www.safebassproductions.com for our upcoming canberra parties (there will be one in September and one in December), as well as www.baseage.com. These guys also put on some quality parties.

Hey, I am a Liverpool fan! Heh heh, totally agree with you there, but that's the way Canberra's clubs are. I'm just telling it like it is.
Mr Funky
p.s. Didn't I mention baseage productions? (by saying Passion and Flying High?). It's just easier to go to somewhere such as sketchycrew or spraci because they're constantly updated. But Global Hype was pretty cool...shame about the lack of peeps.
