The mexican place in the food court at Miranda Westfields is really good. Me and my sister used to drive from Campbelltown, where we live, to Miranda just for the chicken nachos.

Borderland in Crows Nest is also good....

ditto on Cafe Pacifico. Generally you get so loaded on margaritas and coronas it doesnt matter though.

Montezumas at Miranda do excellent taquitos and Newtons Cocina are good too. However I'm off to mexico in a few weeks for proper food :)

mmm, Cafe Pacifico. Those margaritas are deadly, but so delicious. And it's such a great atmosphere. Oh, and the food is excellent.

I think Montezuma's at Crows Nest is crap - such heavy gluggy food. Keen to try Cocina sometime soon.

Montezumas is absoloutely vile. Will never eat at any of them again. The one at Miranda, in the food court or part of some food court made me really really sick. Have been to one of the others and was totally unimpressed Do they count as restaurants or just over rated fast food joints? May aswell just go to Taco Bell.

Had to happen is okay, but on the north shore borderlands at crows nest is better, their Chicken Mole is the goods.

Agreed. Go there if your keen to enjoy a vibrant restaurant, but the food is pretty poor.

Borderland has much better food for Crows Nest.

The best I've had, and i don't eat it much, is at Newton's Cocina on King St, Newtown.

I'd wanted to go there for years, and went there the other week and thought it was the worst Mexican I'd eaten in Sydney, honestly...

I like these two the most:

Juanita's in Kensington (all you can eat tacos and fajitas on Sun/Mon!)

Azteca's in Randwick (the owner there is pretty funny)

Others...

Poco's Cantina in Randwick is ok, but not best ever

Cafe Pacifico, East Sydney is average, but good fun, if hellishly overpriced.

Montezuma's in Crows Nest is ok, so long as you
don't steer from the tacos, tostadas, enchilladas etc

I haven't been to Vera Cruz in Neutral Bay, but from all reports it's great, not your standard tex-mex fare.

The guy at Newtown station makes a good taco at 3am when you're maggot, but I wouldn't bother normally :)

Heard good things about:
Fiesta! in Bondi Junction
Borderland in Crowie
"Had to Happen" in North Sydney

There's also a few others I can't remember right now..

vintage yahtzee

Fiesta! in Bondi Junction

Went there for a party - ok but v.v. overpriced for the teeny portions you get.

The best Mexican, sadly, is Crazy Bull's at Tugun on the Gold Coast. Will def have to try Cocina @ Newtown though given the good reviews everyone seems to have given it.

Its in Alexander Street, kinda near Woolies. Its crapola though. No chilli in it and its just gluggy and cold. Loads of shitty north shore brats go there too...so, maybe if you go, get there after the 8pm bed time! :p
The best mexican I have had was down the coast in Kiama, Ritzy Gritz... but Cafe Pacifica has been the best in Syd so far for me...

First i'd say Hot Salsa on Parramatta Road in Annandale.... awesome !!
Second Azteca's as mentioned before

Both these get the big up from me not so heavy on the Tex-Mex crap

Spitch et al sorry but Newtons Cocina is crap, Pacifico is known for its Tequila, not food... having said that wicked times can be had at that crazy little cantina

My fav restaurants are: -
Hot Salsa in Annandale
Newtown's Cocina

and I give the Montezuma's chain a big thumbs down.

Azteca's in Randwick (the owner there is pretty funny)

Agreed (like many others which is awesome to see), they're a family run business that's been on the same block in Randwick Junction for over 10 years. Their tex-mex is fricken amazing :) Cheap too. The owner will bust out his guitar and croon out a few sometimes.

Montezuma's is wrong. I went a few years back - half of us didn't finish our meals, we just ended up gorging on their sangria instead

Had to Happen is awesome.. they are really friendly and the fajitas are great for groups! good mageritas..

Tex Mex is Mona Vale is good they have cheap deals if you go during the week.. I have always had great food there.. shame about the drive though =(

I have been to Borderland a few times.. its ok but I don't think its as good as Had to happen (however their sangira is aweseome!).. if you go to Borderland with a group.. don't get the set menus they are a rip off..

Montezumas in Crows Nest is not to bad either

I'll throw my hat into the ring for Tito's/XQuisito at Miranda. I used to go to school nearby and would stop every single Wednesday for years for the guacamole plate. Incredibly good stuff.. so much so that I also have made the trip from the North Shore just for the guaca. Mmmm... guaca. :)

Montezumas is a hoax though. Awful stuff. I must give Borderland a try, since I now actually live in Crows Nest. :)

Not sure if it has been mentioned but Juanita's in Kensington on Anzac Parade is our local and is tops. You must eat the Chimichanga:drool:!

"Real" mexican does not exist here. IMO real Mexican food is sheit! If you have ever been you'll know that the food in Mexico is far less eleborate than we get and does not have nearly as much Sour Cream, Chesse and Guacamole (which seem to be part of every Mexican dish here). I was really dissapointed with the food when travelling (although you can't complain about their awesome beer and tequila and beaches and ruins). If you are ever there, try the Mole - Chicken cooked in a Chocolate type sauce. Disturbing.

chicas,

i'm informed that the best cocina mexicana in sydney is found at vera cruz, mosman... however, i have to point out, no mexican food i've ever eaten in sydney actually tastes like anything i ate on travels in mexico... refried beans, cheddar cheese and sour cream don't seem to play a big role in their food (for which the people of mexico should be eternally grateful.)

Am I the only one who thinks that "mexican cuisine" is a contradiction of terms?

Honestly all mexican food seems to be is an endless rehash of corn, refried beans, cheese, chilli and guacamole. It's generally pretty ordinary to say the least and yet popular enough to seemingly have a mexican restaurant in every suburb. It defies all explanation.

Mex = rubbish

How do you differentiate a fajita froma quesadilla?

isnt a fajita fried meat - and a lot of places serve it on a sizzling plate and you roll it up? and a quesadilla is like flattened out and fried...like a pizza sort of thing.

i think.

fajita is more based around the meat.

quesadilla is all about the cheese.

btw I don't endorse mexicans or the food(lol) they create :P

Go to La Pacifico in East Sydney - I still haven't been but I'm told it's mexican food mecca in sydney.

pacifico is good fun but I think the attraction is less in the food - which is alright but not great - and more in the atmosphere and dozens of tequila varieties they stock, and general silliness that normally results

My Mexican mate says Azteca's at Randwick is the best he's had.

Mexican Cuisine, which like other artistic expressions of Mexico, is rich and varied. There is a different type of cuisine in each region of Mexico.

We get the Tex-Mex verisons as they are the most popular and identifiable based on looks and tatstes. Traditional Mexican is actually quite gross. Its like traditional thai or chinese. We dont get the normal stuff but glorified dishes based on westerners tastes etc.

Peasants are where the traditional food is eaten and if you knew what went into it we would never eat it, hence why mexican restaurants serve the tex mex variety... i hope that makes sense? (im confused :meh:)

Cafe Pacifico last night rocked.

Asked for extra jalapenos on my nachos and still wasn't very hot, added some more jalapenos and it was ok but needed more. Got some chilli sauce and the combined strength of the chilli sauce and jalapenos had me firing up. Awesome shit :thumb:

Top food.

Traditional Mexican is not gross...we loved the food over there! You think Mexican food is bad, try Cuba's Soviet-style stodge  plenty of reasons for that which I don't need to go into here I think.

But I agree you are unlikely to find anything apart from Tex Mex style here from what I've seen.

I'm another person who finds the quality and quantity of Mexican food quite lacking here..

ps. A page or 2 ago some people were saying that Jimenez is a good restaurant.. believe me it's not anymore. Used to go there when I was in highschool (went to school down the road) and I went back a few weeks ago. The food was fucking awful.. bland and obviously not fresh. I remember it being better

The BEST mexican restaurant in Sydney is Big Mexican Rancho in Gymea Bay. It's like heaven on a plate and once i'd eaten it I just wanted to do it all over again.
Anyone who says Newtown Cocina is good needs their head checked or has been living on a diet of rats and anything is an upgrade.
The food there is not only filthy but downright dangerous...i'm pretty sure what they serve as chicken is a pigeon from the gutter.

I've eaten at Newton's quite a bit and yep, once I had really bad diarrohea afterwards and was pretty ill for about 24 hours.

It's asset is it caters for large groups which is why we tend to end up there on occasion for big birthday and farewell do's in the local area (plus it's easy for the vego contingent).

The service is also pretty crap. Wouldn't book it myself but I go when other do.

I <3 Mexican.

I hate Newtown, with somewhat of a passion, but I'm there just about weekly for Guzman Y Gomez. A tad pricy for what is pretty much a fast food-esque joint (I walk out $15-$20 lighter each time), but it really shits on everything else.

For a more cafe experience, I enjoyed teh Chocolate Dog Cafe which is more towards the St. Peter's end of King St.
