I thought i was going to get in first - I can't believe I was beaten.
I am not sure if we can beat you with reviews sumphreak - I personally am not a fan of going to b grade acts and i think this is where you could categorise a lot of stuff played in Brisbane.
For example - If I hear about another international playing here on a f**cking wednesday or thursday I will kill something. It just drives you nuts. Even worse is when the Djs give Brisbane a miss altogether. It doesnt suprise me that they don't come here though. They have probably heard how we are crap at putting on big gigs.
Gatecrasher at easter was typical. It was probably one of the worst set ups I have ever seen. Dancing on hard tiles, average sound and the heat was truly terrible. I was suprised they came back at all.
Still, right now we are in a great time for partying. I am savouring every minute of it.

that's a shame that brisbane is like that. i would have thought things would be better. do you have any really good venues? we are very lucky here in perth that we have a few really top-class promoters who are prepared to take risks and put on more expensive events with really big names. it has proved extremely popular and now they are regular. you might have seen the lineups for nye and some other big parties. sound like brisbane needs the same sort of thing.
are there many underground kinda clubs and stuff with quality music week to week, and do they draw good numbers? hope things get betta

Sumphreak,
Brisbane does have a few quality clubs pushing good music and attempting to get internationals, but it's very much a case of pushing @!#$ uphill.
Dance music does not have a wide acceptance in Brisbane, rock still rules the roost and the confinement of proper dance clubs to one district (i.e Fortitude Valley) restricts the possibilities for Brissie dance culture. It also seems
that whilst promoters and nights are aimed at pushing certain styles, there seems to be a blanket diffidence shown by clubbers towards anything that is not hard, pumping, and in your face. This is not to say there are not great things bubbling away in Brisbane. The DJs are supremely talented, and ones such as Angus and Mark Briais can truly cut it with the best. The House sound is growing stronger, Djs like Freestyle, Brian Lovegrove, Matt Nugent and more doing their thing at the Monastery and the Empire; Breaks has a loyal following through the Moon Bar and DJs like
Shredlock, plus Johnny G@Ric's; Drum 'n' bass has a fervent following, but only in certain pockets, DJs Static 'n' Lincoln, Jedi & Xeon leading the way forward, Synetik on production; Progressive is well-respected and hip hop has taken off with the success of the Resin Dogs and Soma Rasa. Techno is quite under-represented, although internationally acclaimed DJ Kazu Kimura is going about fixing that, as are clubs such as Mantra(soon to be rebuilt after the nasty fire). There's a lot more going on in Brisbane which is undiscovered, lack of forums to showcase these developments hindering the spread of these influences.
We have tonnes of website forums and a strong, dance-dedicated street magazine (Scene), so there are some of us who are bitterly disappointed with Brisbane's development.
I have watched Perth with envy these past few years - it has taken right off and I find it amazing that Perth has such a great range of events such as techno gigs, d 'n'b and breaks nights and deep house forays. You must be quite proud of the diverse Perth scene. I must say I am ashamed that Brisbane is a city with a population much greater than Perth's, yet your dance scene trounces ours.
The reason why internationals come up here on a midweek is reasonaly simple. From the promoter's point of view, they usually get flown out here by a Sydney or Melbourne
promoter to do a Friday/Saturday. The Brisbane promoters can gretaly save on cost by grabbing an international whilst they are in the country, thus negating a lot of those ikky travelling/touring expenses. The trade-off here is that the international won't be available on a Fri/Sat, so the Brisbane promoter picks them up for a midweek show (at probably a discount rate due to the midweek), so they go ahead. It's been a Brisbane institution for years so it's not really going to change for awhile.
Clubs such as Mantra have dedicated themselves to purusing a serious, quality music policy, whereas some of the other dance clubs are all about cheap (and nasty) drinks!
Another salient feature present in a lot of other scenes that is lacking in Brisbane is that in many parties and clubs there is scant attention to detail paid. What should be an 'experience' for punters ends up as a DJ mixing records through an accoustically challenged PA with the same old lights not configured to the music and a total lack of atmosphere. This deficiency in flair an dimaginationcould be a symptom of the lack of venues, lack of cash/certain amount of greed in an unwillingness to spend extra on props/theming, and just a general lack of imagiantion in conceiving interesting conepts and perspectives for parties.
At the end of the day, a fair chunk of the dance-loving public believe the image that has been created of Brisbane being a crappy town for the culture and the accompanying music and parties. Admittedly, cheap, high quality speed, a swag of let-downs, rip-offs, dodgy promoters/club owners, lack of venues, the heat, low disposable incomes, rednecks, B-grade internationals passed off as GODS by promoters and the iron clad dominance of hardcore, then hard house are just SOME of the factors affecting Brisbane's dance culture.
A possible remedy is stop people buying into the "Brisbane is @!#$" mantra and starting to point them in more positive directions. Secondly, now that Brisbane has been exposed as having a diverse variety of dance events/genres/scenes, the all-important step is to get people hearing about them and getting out and supporting them. It seems
apathy is an increasing symptom not only of Brisbane but of global culture, and the apathy that set in years ago (when there wasn't as much going on) seems infectious. WE NEED TO STOP IT!
All of the above isn't to say there aren't good things happening in Brisbane, or that all promoters and clubs are dodgy. The Lifted crew, Advent'jah team, Monastery, Mantra, Moon Bar, Ric's and Empire plus more all do great work in what is a very tough industry and location - hats off to them and let's look forward to a bright future for Brisbane!
Cutmaster Cash, sounds like you obviously know your stuff! You should write for ITM! :) Your forum post itself is a pretty good discourse on the Brisbane scene...
Right on Cutmaster Cash!!!
I agree with you 100% - you really have covered all the things that make up the Brisbane scene. @!#$ I am so impressed!
Like Marcus said, it would be great if you could write for ITM. If you want to get involved, sign up and then drop me an email.

just for nostalgia's sake... the first post on our humble board.
cutmaster cash........Brissie sux because a lot of those clubs and Dj's you mentioned are not helping dance music in this city at all.......perth rocks it because they have an open and positive attitude toward dance music......good records don't get pushed by DJ's here and the whole scene revolves around wanka's that's the problem....
and I dare say I have a valid opinion on this as I have worked with and for some of them and know their attitude.........
