I went to state last week, and I was SO impressed with the quality of the music and the DJ's there, especially D-Boy, who i'd never heard of before that night. Better than most Sydney DJ's that i've seen.
After reading all the complaints about melt, i started to wonder, what are people's reasons for going out?
I think that there are a lot of people out there that are going out just to 'go out' (if you know what i mean). From my experiences in habana, people aren't really that interested in the DJ and the music that he plays (one exception to that was Lawler).
Everyone seems to think that Chris Fresh is Canberra's one and only decend DJ. No way. Two examples are Vance Musgrove who was awesome at Lawler, as was D-Boy last friday night.
Anyways, basically my point is that you should all start caring a little more about QUALITY in canberra. If you think melt sucks, then DON'T GO. Save yourself for the nights of quality music, and hopefully the club owners will get the message.

I fail to see anything wrong with going out without really caring about the DJs. There are other things to do than dance and take pills. :p

Besides, it's hard for quality up and comers to get a decent spin unless the opportunity is handed to them on a silver platter (like Nubreed). There are barely enough major events for the established DJs to all get a go and the new smaller evening can't afford to fill the lineups with no frills DJs because then no one will go, and thus promoters get no cash.

Hhaahah without the pills, I doub't half the 'rave' population in Canberra could barely get off their chairs..

Mmm. True.

Isn't that a little bit pathetic.

hi there

i agree with your comments about state, not least because it offers a quality alternative to the dance schedule

while melt may vary in quality on occasion, it often depends, I Do BELIEVE, on the vibe at the time. quality and creativity can build on the nite when a relationship builds between the dj and the punter - something about feedback and being prepared to buy into the thing, i guess.

if there's one thing about melt that lessens my personal capacity to enjoy -it would have to be the Unadulterated attention from some of the less savoury characters lurking where you least expect them - how do you clean that up?

i have met some Wonderful folks at Habana tho and enjoy my evenings (and mornings) there -- a recent weekEnd in adelaide confirmed for me that canberra really aint too Nasty!!

I'm thinking...More attendance at the alternative nites will result in Enhanced capacity for Entrepreneurs to Treat us to more variety - in the meantime i'll enjoy the talent here - of which i believe there is a growing breed - and hopefully bump into U having a great nite out too!!

many cheers

re: "without the pills, I doub't half the 'rave' population in Canberra could barely get off their chairs"

I'm not so sure about that... I've played up on only 6 nights out since April, and I'm out at something most weekends I'm in town... a couple of friends dance all night too and have never dropped, or drop less often than I do (ie 1ce every month or two)

for me it doesn't gel with my experience that dance music always = pilling. I've been into electronic / dance music on and off since about 1994, didn't get into taking anything stronger than guarana pills or caffeine until last year.

my number one priority has got to be having the absolute best fun party crew people to be with, a close second is the quality of the DJs and music, third after that is the total vibe of the club/rave I'm at...

... only once all those things are good and in place, does dropping come into the mix... for sure its amazingly sweet and delicious icing on the cake, but you have got to have the cake first yeah? :)

I guess that answers your question up the top too Bubbles - why do I go out in cbr? well when I've got my dancin buddies onboard (doesn't matter if its a lot, like 20+ at lawler, or just 3, like at State) and the music is something I luuurve, then its all good! I think you're right that people should be selective, but as you also said in your post, there are actually quite a few good nights out there to be had at the moment. Perhpas also I can enjoy the cbr scene for what it is cos I get out of here to sydney or melbourne on a semi regular basis too.

If the music is good, and your friends are there, you're gonna have a good night no matter what.

If the DJ is crap, i doubt that you'll want to hang around for much longer. I wouldn't.

I agree, canberra has some awesome nights on at the moment. I think a lot of them are just as good as many of the nights at sydney clubs.

ps - go to FRICTION this friday.
