View Full Version : passing judgement on the brisbane scene

about time there was a forum for brisbane folk. no need to raid the sydney/melbourne ones any more. now i will have a place to unleash my manifesto!

overall i reackon its not that bad here. but I think that some of the best acts are put in really dodgy spaces. When the internationals come over they typically play at places like the arena, technomad, the zoo or viva. the arena is not really a dance venue and it gets all hot and steamy. in technomad the place is set out all wrong and it is always full of hangers-on who just seem to sit and watch you when you dance. the zoo is pretty good but perhaps a bit old. It has a bit of an undergound feel to it, but the only strange thing is this set of stairs that comes up onto the dancefloor (bad dance floor feng shui if you know what I mean).

viva - i have never been to viva! many times have i wanted to go to viva BUT just about every international (certainly every one I want to see) has played there on a weeknight - and i work. when the internationals come to australia, @!#$ loads of times they play on a night other than friday or saturday in brisbane. thats because the dj is playing in sydney or melbourne (or somewhere else) on the weekend. viva is probably the worst offender when it comes to the mid-week big dj routine.

all of this doesnt mean that you can't have a good time. I have had a great time listening to locals like static and lincoln, shredlock, mc sureshock etc and i think they have had to work thier asses off, without getting the recognition they deserve. i like lots of different styles and i reckon that within thier genre ( i hate labelling them like that though), they are really @!#$ hot.

if you are into rave styles then brisbane rocks! system 6 has a huge following. the fact that this is a speed town and not really an e town is a big factor in the popularity of this sort of music here.

if you want good quality house or tecnho then you might as well leave your dancing shoes at the city limits. from what i have seen, it is all pretty ordinary. i don't think its the dj's because some of them are pretty good. usually it is a lack of atmoshphere. you see some really good dj's playing to clubs that are half full all the time.

however festivals here are gooood! BDO good! adventjah good! livid good! summer good!. in fact right now it is absolutely fantastic here. to be realistic, most of the time it is pretty average.

i reckon the brisbane public (the unconverted ones) need some education when it comes to dance music. the dance music stations that have been doing trial broadcasts up here are, in my humble opinion, @!#$! (we still dont have a permanent one yet). 90% of the time they play this teeny, bubble gum crap. of course any young brisbane-ite would think dance music is a utter crap - how could you blame them?

so there's my opinion of brisbane. yep, pretty much all of it. what does everyone else in brisland think?

i am not in brisbane but have been to the moonbar a couple of times is recent years, and i think that club absolutely rocks. i have visited many breaks clubs around the country, and i think the moonbar stands as arguably the best breaks and beat related night this country has on offer.

shredlock is playing at happy valley in sydney, he played here awhile ago at the blueprint which is sydney's leading breaks and drum n bass night. he rocked it, so did sureshock and b-boy seiz. sydney audiences were stunned.

there is generally a fairly patheric view of brisbane from other cities, mainly because it seems the more mainstream promoters who sometimes are perhaps not pushing the sounds for the right reasons have either mistreated or fucked off interstate or international guests.

but big props to places and promoters responsible for moonbar and system 6, it would seem from the outside that these guys are following their hearts and their passion for the sound. at the end of the day this is the main element in a successful club night or event.

and don't worry about viva - isn't it a strip club now?

Don't forget to look at the smaller venues or even the ol' outdoor doof.
You don't need a 20 DJ line up with a glow stick up your arse to generate atmosphere.
What about the Zen Warehouse parties, Mantra Meltdown I & II or the glam royalty of Headfunk.
Perhaps you should take another look around . The best stuff is usually hidden.
