:::::: DJ Tomasz ::::::

Hailing from Sydney, Tomasz has recently started mixing his own beats rather than just dancing all night to other DJs.

An early love and appreciation of then called Techno led to a deeper interest after attending dance parties (clubbing was out of the question at that tender age). Bouncing to tunes pumped out by DJ's like Nik Fish, Peewee Ferris, Nervous, John Ferris, but preferring a deeper trance, Tomasz has found his groove playing psy-trance and goa. Influenced by many raves in Australia and Europe, Tomasz isn't hasty in pumping out the newest tracks or the latest hits, but prefers unknown tracks that suit the overall style that he enjoys.

:::::: DJ Deceptikon ::::::

Deceptikon developed his ear for percussion at a tender age due to being raised by a collective of small squirrel monkeys. Through his use of progressive trance melodies & dark subterranean house beats he became famous for helping to pioneer monkey-human relations.

He has continued his enthusiasm for mixing & live production in the past three years, playing in and around Brisbane. Since 96 he has played with a diverse range of DJs and producers from F.I.S.T to Pee Wee Ferris & Paul Holden yet enjoys playing to crowds at underground parties such as the recent 'Nightmare Before Christmas'.

Up until last month Deceptikon could have been found entertaining crowds at Technomad on Thursday nights in the Liqiud Lounge and is now focusing on production with local drum machine enthusiast & king of the low range 'Beat Master Booga'. Their music has been picked up by Brisbane's Electronic Artists Society & included on the compilation 'Playing With Machines 1' & soon to be released 'PWM2'. If you want to catch Deceptikon he can be seen playing at the 'floor' parties, check the Pulse Radio site for details.

:::::: DJ Chris Tisdell :::::: (regular guest DJ)

http://welcome.to/christisdell

Music With Emotion; Progressive House and Trance for the Advanced

Chris Tisdell is one of Brisbane's most respected, successful and versatile talents and has been involved in the dance music scene for the best part of a decade; from Djing through to organising and running club nights and distributing dance music throughout Australia.

Technically brilliant and with "a mixing style which has been described as seamless" (Rave Magazine #169), Chris regularly DJs at many of South-East Queensland's top clubs where he dishes up some of the hottest vinyl to the masses, and is best known for his epic three hour sets consisting of pumping progressive house / trance. Moreover, Chris has been one of the pioneers in actively pushing this energetic and emotional style of music throughout Australia.

Chris has supported such artists as Chicane, Danny Howells, Ferry Corsten, Binary Finary, Robert Miles, Colin Tevendale, Art of Trance, Anne Savage, Roger Sanchez, Terra Ferma, Baby Doc, Union Jack, Andy Passman, S-J, DJ Patrick Reid, Highland, Pee Wee Ferris, Sean Quinn and Kasey Taylor to name just a few.

In the Groove imports [http://welcome.to/inthegroove] was set up by Chris five years ago. In the Groove offers a vinyl service for the discerning Dj as well as distributing records and Dj equipment throughout the country. Some labels which are distributed through In The Groove are; Strictly Rhythm, Stress Records and Cleveland City as well as local label Liquid Motion Records.

Deeply involved in dance music marketing and promotions, Chris has successfully organised parties and promotions for such companies as Stress Records (UK), Mixmag, DMC, Dancenet, Crash Bang! Records, Hooj Choons(UK), MDS (Mushroom Records), Strictly Rhythm (USA), Cheeky Records (UK) and Platipus Records (UK). Chris has also promoted for the likes of Ultra Nate and Faithless plus a host of interstate DJs such as Phil K (DMC Melb), Mark Dynamix (Syd) and Christian Barker (Syd).

On a more local scene, Chris is currently running the highly acclaimed "Progression" nights which have resided at various clubs throughout Brisbane over the past four years including The Tube and The Arena. Progression is Qld's only regular night dedicated to trance and progressive house. Most recently, Progression enjoyed its most successful night in history as 1600 punters crammed in to see the Platipus Sound System perform live.

Chris' friendly nature, good ear for music and ability to harmonize with the crowd both on and off the decks, combined with his professionalism, attention to detail, experience and industry knowledge make him one of Brisbane's most highly regarded talents.

:::::: Music for Pleasure ::::::

Matt and Charles, both 19 are Music For Pleasure, a vehicle for the proliferation of all LIVE, all ELECTRONIC music in a world of DJs, Play - Boys and Made for EF EM Cheeze.

After jamming together every few months for several years and graduating from blues and metal to more electronic styles thanks to the influence of some borrowed synthesisers, matt and charles formally joined together as MFP in Jan of 2000. Soon after completeing their first track together, Cylon, they entered it into the National Youthweek band competition, 'RockIt', and were selected as finalists (a beam of electrons in a world of six strings?). After this they spent some time translating their act to a live format, with the emphasis on live performance and improvisation.

This concept they have honed over the more than 20 performances that they have done throughout 2000. Although their fomidable live setup regularly stretches the limits of stage size and PA headroom at venues around Brisbane, MFP remain commited to keeping their music as live and spontaneous as possible, and their creative input a vital part of the performance. They deliver not quality but quantity. Whereas some electronic artists are content to limit their live performances to operating a CD player, MFP truely play their instruments. Those who have attended their "ambient" gigs can attest to their versatility within electronic styles. They pull off three hours of totally improvised ambient music as smoothly as a set of acidic beats and breaks or a laid back hiphop session.

When not recording or playing live, MFP can be found inside Megastudiozoid, where they work tirelessly to produce some of the flood of other new Brisbane eMusicians, as part of their role in the Electronic Artist's Society [http://www.egroups.com/group/uqeas].

:::::: endoPHONIC ::::::

endoPHONIC - music for your inner ear

An electronic/acoustic/organic fusion with influences running the gamut from ambient to bleeding edge classical music, endoPHONIC present a live mixture of pre-digested and improvised material that ensures each performance is a distinctive event. With elements including home-made MIDI controllers, electronic transformations of acoustic sound sources and real-time software synthesis the emphasis in each performance is on the exploration of sonic textures and wefts. The result is a swirling morass of haunting sonorities and addictive beats.

endoPHONIC is greg jenkins and richard wilding. Both are graduates of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and have together worked on various film soundtracks and as part of the composer’s collective Trojan Theatre. For this performance on PULSE radio, endoPHONIC will be joined by classical cellist jane elliott. They will fuse the beautiful resonances of jane’s bowing with their distinctive electronica producing a singular, integrated music.

greg likes to hit things; things such as suspended arrays of
inverted flower pots; things such as beer kegs; things such as
midi percussion controllers which allow him to subversively remap non-percussive sound objects to percussive performance gestures. He’s also into homemade technology, constructing various midi-controllers that in performances he uses to control software synthesis engines, allowing him to perform directly on the software in real time. At endoPHONIC gigs he’s the one prodding, kneading and caressing the rubber coated surface. greg is also known as “cactusman” due to his penchant for playing a cactus as an amplified acoustic instrument.

Richard likes to blend disparate elements with a wild eclecticism
that doesn’t respect boundaries of genre, style or taste. He has
worked variously as a literary theorist and new music critic, as
the person who presses the big red button on photocopiers and as a forensic recording analyst. As part of endoPHONIC he works with computer-based synthesis and composition while concentrating on torturing his guitar with an e-bow and a variety of medieval effects devices - usually as an accompaniment to succulent fondlers. Musical influences include Brian Eno, Michael Brook, Olivier Messiaen and traditional Asian musics though really he wastes most of his time watching Japanese anime.

:::::: Pharmacy::::::

Pharmacy is Marc Wright - not a DJ, not a live performer, not a
club-goer, not street-smart, doesn’t say ‘wicked’. In fact, he’s
not a very cool guy at all.

While not intentional, that’s the way he likes it. ‘I listen to
all styles of non-commercial music, but by being secluded from
the current music ‘scene’, my own music is not polluted by what’s cool this week, or what the public are dancing to, or what anyone else thinks. It allows me to simply make the music I want to.

So, what sort of music is it? Big Beat? ‘Um..sort of'’. Trip-hop?
‘Well, I love the underground stuff , and the influences are
there, but it doesn’t really sound like that at all’. House?
Gabba? Blues? Industrial? Punk? ‘It’s all of that and none of that. It would fit comfortably into the underground electronic scene, but it really is all its own sound. I can’t really classify it,
and I don’t really care to. Once again, I’m not a big fan of
restrictions on my music, so I don’t go out of my way to restrict
myself to a specific genre’.

The music is almost 100% samples - and the samples come from anywhere. A VHS machine is playing porno movie dialogue into a sampler, to be blended and fused with the tones of distorted drums, kitchen utensils, funky and dirty guitars, prayer meetings, and long-dead convict chain-gangs. The building blocks of the next track.

A major feature of the music is the work of various guest musicians - most predominantly regular guitarist Brendan Canavan, whose excellent, eclectic work suffers sampling, looping, gets butchered and disfigured and is generally fucked around with by Marc.

With a past that includes playing punk guitar, blues harmonica, and jazz trumpet, Marc remains passionate about all these styles, but has found his niche - manufacturing electronic music of a non-specific genre that simply messes with your head.

But, it ain’t just the music. Marc has now turned to producing his
own video clips. Same format as the songs - start with the basics
and overdose everything with special effects.... and don’t discard anything.

Please see the Pulse Radio website for contact details.

:::::: Elizabeth Wei ::::::

Elizabeth Wei is an extraordinary young Australian talent. Originally from Beijing in China, she moved to Australia in 1990 when she was only 10 years old and lives on Brisbane's North side. Now with a perfect command of English, (much of which was learned by watching MTV and other TV shows!), she has always wanted to sing. At 17 she began her recording career with a demo which found its way to record companies in Sydney.

Her unique voice, exotic looks and bubbly personality had an immediate impact and she was soon contracted by Origin Recordings as a featured vocalist for the project band "EGO". She also appeared on TV singing the hit song "My Heart Will Go On" from the film 'Titanic' which attracted a lot of attention and praise at the time. Shortly after that, Elizabeth went back to China where she appeared on two network TV shows there to much acclaim.

Unfortunately, it wasn't all good news. Elizabeth mysteriously became very ill. She was diagnosed as having SLE, the severe form of Lupus - a potentially fatal autoimmune disease predominantly affecting women of Asian or Afro-American descent and for which there is no known cure.

1999 was a horror year for her with many months spent either in
hospital or recovering from the ravages of the illness.

But this brave young woman wasn't about to give up. She has fought back and, with the help of her doctors, tackled her situation with unbelievable courage and determination. Now finally back to normality with her condition in remission and under control, she is about to release her first single with EGO called 'Sundrop'. The video clip for the title track has recently gained airplay on several TV shows and the single is due for imminent release (16th October 2000).

'Sundrop', written by Adrian Van de Velde, is a catchy, atmospheric contemporary dance/pop song with deceptively sophisticated hook lines and insistent rhythmic structure which provides a solid backdrop for Elizabeth's distinctive voice which soars over the track effortlessly. There are also dance remix versions on the CD which are certain to find their way into the clubs and onto the dance floors everywhere.

Organisers of the RAQ Fashion Awards, produced and televised
annually by Channel 7 in Brisbane, were sent pre-release copies of the CD and video and were so impressed that Elizabeth will be featured on the show which went to air on the 20th October 2000.

As well as promoting the single and all that entails, Elizabeth is
currently working on new material, some self penned, for a solo album which is being produced and recorded in Brisbane and will hopefully be ready for release early in the new year.

Elizabeth has proved to herself and those around her that she is
capable of going on to great things. Talent and determination on
this level is irrepressible. We will be hearing much more of her
down the track and success couldn't come to a nicer or more deserving person.

:::::: DJ Oracle ::::::

DJ Oracle (Fergus Seppanen) has been mixing on and off for a year as often as he can get on the decks. He mixes a range of styles from Tribal House/Techi thru to Progressive and Euro Trance, but absolutley no Hard House. He also likes to throw in a Breakbeat track given the chance.

After a year of partying hard and watching DJ Magoo mix at home, Oracle decided to buy some vinyl and hit the decks himself. He has a keen love of music which was also a big factor in his decision to start mixing and "sees the decks and music as an extension of Myself". He has also been influenced by other local friends who have made it in the electronic music area.

Oracle's most memorable DJing experience so far was the day he beat mixed his first track. He's possibly playing at a Tree planting party in March (details yet to be finalised) and he will be playing on briz:b:e:a:t:s this Sunday 4th Feb between 1-2pm.

If he is not working at Woolies Indooroopilly on the checkouts, you can find him out and about dancing at various parties and having fun or spending time with his girlfriend.

Oracle's favourite tracks are "Are am Eye" by Commander Tom, "The First Rebirth" and all its Remixes by Jones and Stephenson, "Plumpy Chunks" by Plump DJ's, "Willow" by Aria and many more..

:::::: DJ Timotei ::::::

Timotei (aka Timothy Walters) recently stepped up to the decks after living in Brisbane and moving to London late 1999. Already he has played at many of the cooler house parties around the streets of London, as well as playing regularly at the Carbon parties supporting artists such as Bentley Rhythm Ace, Aston Harvey and Norman Jay.

Timotei returns to Brisbane for a brief visit and will be playing on
briz:b:e:a:t:s between 2-3pm (Brisbane time = GMT+10). Expect to hear some deep and funky house during this set!

:::::: DJ Eric Powell [UK/Bush Records/Boo Records] ::::::

Eric Powell started DJing in Manchester, his home town, in what
was to become known as the "Summer of Love". He went on to DJ at all of Manchester's most important clubs including the world famous Hacienda. It was not long before Eric became one of the UKs most sought after guest DJs and in 1994 he took on residencies at the Zap Club in Brighton, at a night called Protection and the Red Club. Both these nights have won
awards and much respect throughout the UK.

Eric Powell owns and runs Bush Records, one of the most recognisable and sought after dance labels in the world today. He is responsible for introducing to us, the talents of artists such as Dave Clarke, Felix the House cat, J Daniel, Rozzo, Thomas Schumacher, Trevor Rockcliffe and Devilfish, on the house side Eric launched Boo Records at the end of 1998 which so far has given us such gems as SF Express "My Love is Stronger" and Phats and Small's "Turnaround".

Eric DJs throughout Europe regularly, touring Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland and Holland. He has mixed a CD for the Psychotrance series alongside the likes of Darren Emerson, Mr C and Slam, and has mixed live on the Essential show on Radio 1, the UKs only national dance show. In November 1999, a DJ mix set was broadcast on the Universe show in London.
Eric also released a mixed CD through Hardware Records.

This certainly is an impressive selection of some of the clubs and tours Eric has DJed at across the world : The Complex, Ministry of Sound, The End, Club UK [London], E-Works, Matrix [Berlin], Kadoc [Portugal], Kremlin, Climax [Lisbon], Hacienda [Manchester], Cream [Liverpool], Sanctuary [Miami], Zap [Brighton], Tuz [St. Petersburg], Mazzo [Amsterdam], Airport [Frankfurt], Amnesia, Space [Ibiza], and the Ultimate World Tour - Cream Tour.

Eric arrived on our Australian shores on 01.01.99 and since then has rocked the dance floor at many of our prestigious clubs and parties. Eric first played here at Two Tribes, the massive dance festival here in Melbourne, which attracted 10 000 partygoers, and boy did he make an impression! His next gig was at Hardware 15, alongside Devilfish, where he drove the corwd wild and entertained us all with his fresh mix of tek
house and house selections. Eric has gone on to play regular guest spots at Saratoga on both Friday and Saturday nights and other clubs such as the Prince of Wales and Teriyaki. He also travelled regularly to Sydney for a special bimonthly residency at the infamous club Home.

After playing at what was considered to be the best New Years Eve party in the world i.e. - Bondi Beach Sydney - Eric returned to England in January 2000, but the pull of the Southern hemisphere was too much and he has now returned to Melbourne and is setting up a permanent base in Australia.

Eric has already been booked for the Homeland festivals in both Melbourne and Sydney (cancelled) and will be playing at the Future 2001 New Years Eve festival. Eric has just released a track through Nervous in New York under the name of "Base Twelve".

2001 is already looking like being a great year with Eric taking up a residency at Salt in Melbourne, he is also playing in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth with Carl Cox and Darren Emerson in late January and early February.

Eric will be establishing a permanent base in Australia for the associated Bush labels. He has already commissioned remixes from Umek, Valintino, Joey Beltram and Doc Martin.

January 2001 will see the second release from Sean Colt on Bush which is already causing a major stir from the lucky few with promotional copies.

Also in January, Eric will release on Boo a Jeremy B (best known for his releases and remixes on Azulil) remix of "Funked up" also part of the package will be a Snow Monkey's remix of Ten Men's "Head in the Clouds". Ten Men is the other half of the Bush set up Eric Gooden.

The first release on Bush in Frebruary is the long awaited Joey Beltram Remix of Melbourne's own Filter Science.

..On February 2nd, Eric Powell will be playing at the Opening Night Special at "The Cross" - the new underground dance music environment fusing a weekly intake of cutting edge Music : Technology : Fashion : Art and Dance @ The Monastery in Brisbane. He'll be playing a mixture of old
and new (freshly arrived last week!) Bush label tunes as well as a few others thrown in for good measure.

:::::: DJ Bacon ::::::

DJ Bacon has had five years DJing experience ranging from authentic, lethal breaks and beats, hip hop, electro, funk and instrumental sounds. He's a turntablist with proven DJ battle experience, competing in QLD Technics DMC Competition (2000), QLD Vestax ITF Competition (2000), "The Ultimate Dj Showdown" (2000), as well as being the turntablist/scratch DJ for Brisbane's breaks & beats band OK SUSHI. He was also
the resident DJ for University Of QLD Clubs And Societies (2000), and has performed numerous times on 4zzz FM. DJ Bacon has also been busy recording and releasing DJ mix-tapes under his own label "Stinky Records", which are sold at Rockinghorse and Butter Beats. DJ Bacon has performed
alongside some of Australia's best DJs including DJ Dexter (World DMC # 2/Avalanches), DJ Kristian (QLD DMC # 1), The Master (QLD ITF #1), DJ Katch (Resin Dogs) and a host of other local dj's and emcees.

"I have listened to hip-hop since it's infancy in 1986, and have gained enormous knowledge about sample-based music in this time, knowledge that I can portray to the audience through Djing. Due to the underground nature of hip-hop, and my love for the music, I have stayed out of the club DJ scene, preferring to test my skills by competing in DJ Battles, as a move to garner respect among dj's and patrons. In a club situation I prefer to play funky instrumental beats with precision scratching. I
can play ten or more different 1 hour sets, so my music never gets repetitive, due to the variety of styles."

DJ Bacon has just released a fresh DJ mix cd :
"This mix was released as a means to exposing a lot of the rare and underground funky trax I have in my collection, and was released as a "street mix". The first 30 minutes is a funky, big beat, hip-hop mix with some instrumental trax thrown in. It includes such artists as Beastie Boys, Peanut Butter Wolf, Run DMC, Dr Octagon, EPMD, Mad DR X and more. In a club situation I would use less vocal songs and more of the funky instrumental trax. The last 30 minutes contains a lot of old and rare electro songs, very funky but quite unknown trax from such
artists as Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash and other old skool style electro artists."

"This CD was recorded in two live 30-minute sets, and clearly shows the precision of my mixing skills. The cassette version of this mix, and my previous mixtape are for sale at Rockinghorse and Butter Beats and include a full track list."

DJ Bacon is playing a set on briz:b:e:a:t:s this Sunday between 1-2pm (Brisbane time = GMT+10). If you are interested in finding out more about DJ Bacon or have an enquiry about his mix cd or label, you can contact him via email : stinky_records@hotmail.com

:::::: John Chantler from artifik/o ::::::

artifik/o started out (then as 'lokeyfeel') when toby ganley and john chantler, who'd met studying political philosophy at university, discovered shared interest in brisbane's live electronica scene with bands such as elevation, p.oiler, resin dogs, soma rasa and superfluid. toby started messing around with beats and samples on his computer and was soon joined
by john laying down live breaks... this arrangement soon gave way as the pair both concentrated on sampling as their means of music production and in february, 2000, released their first EP 'introducing the conditions of possibility'.

The EP earnt a four-star review in time off and was described as a must for those "who liked their electronic music with a twist of oddity" (full transcript at www.inventingzero.net). the pair then went on to work with iczer one's lawrence english on a limited edition 12-track split CD "kaeru ongaku" on which each party traded remixes of the other's tracks. john has also recently released a limited edition solo EP 'the place between here and' on his own label: inventing zero. a full length artifik/o release
is scheduled for april on horrorshow records.

on the live front toby and john have played a variety of gigs around brisbane including support for david shea, soma rasa, and gigs at the pot music bar, woodford folk festival, moon bar, ric's cafe and the zoo. in terms of format, artifik/o are joined live by lawrence english who adds sampler, theremin, scanner and effects to toby's two computers and john's heavily effected
turntable manipulation.
_______________________________________________
'the place between here and' is the first solo release by john chantler of brisbane electronic music outfit: artifik/o.

over the cd's seven tracks john traverses beat-less soundscapes, minimal electronica and leftfield breaks programming, with only a vague reference to the abstract hip-hop of his previous (and current) work with artifik/o
and lokeyfeel.

a largely mellow affair, 'the place between here and' blends warm bass tones and a dark ambience together moving away from sample-based music's traditional roots in dance and hip hop.

pressed as a strictly limited edition CD EP on john's own label: 'inventing zero', 'the place between here and' is available in brisbane at both butterbeats (ann st, fortitude valley) and rockinghorse (adelaide st, city) for AU$12.50 (inc GST). it can also be ordered online through rockinghorse:
www.rockinghorse.net <http://www.rockinghorse.net> or by mailorder via www.inventingzero.net <http://www.inventingzero.net>

'exile in a dream' and 'the place between here and' can also be downloaded as MP3 audio (free of charge) from www.inventingzero.net

John Chantler will be DJing and playing some of his original music on briz:b:e:a:t:s this Suday 11th Feb between 2-3pm (Brisbane time).
