Well, there is a 'Have you read any good books lately' thread.
Now to start a Film one.
I watched Disco Pigs a few weeks ago now and this film still haunts me.
Disco Pigs is about two extreme seventeen year olds, Pig and Runt.
Pig and Runt were born on the same day, in the same hospital, moments apart. Twins, all but by blood. Inseparable from birth, they are almost telepathic. They are also partners in crime, with an appetite for recklessness, exploration and destruction. But days before their 17th birthday the perfect balance of their world begins to shift. Pig's sexual awakening and increasing jealousy begins to threaten the private universe they have spent their lives constructing. Unable to contemplate the loss of Runt, Pig's unpredictable nature spirals out of control in a trail of violence. The invisible thread between them is stretched to breaking point, the inseparable are about to separate, and which one will survive depends on which one can break free.
A modern day Romeo and Juliette to some degree.
This is one of films where you cant help but be effected by it's power, and will have you thinking about it for some time after.
I recomend this to everyone.
So, has anyone seen any good films lately?

I saw Birth recently with Nicole Kidman. I must say it was quite troubling, yet a very intersting concept. Basically its about a woman whose husband dies 10years previously and shes about to get married (although still troubled over her husbands death). She then meets a ten year old boy who claims to be her dead husband. The child knows every detail about the husbands life and knows intimate details about Nicole Kidmans character. Its very weird and a strange love for the boy occurs which is rather disturbing. None the less check it out. Its slow, but reall good (Nicole Kidmans performance justifies her wage).
Another brillant movie is Dancer in the Dark.
Its about a mother whos eye sight is slowly depleting, a disorder which is hereditary, so she moves to the united states in order to get enough money to have reversable surgery for her young son, in order to save his eye sight. She works in a factory earning barely anthing, yet saving everything she gets to pay for it. Through all this she is still able to hear the music in everything, getting through her life by imagining her life in a musical.
Its soo sad, it has a twist a little way through it but I wont give it away (the twist isn't to do with the eyesight incase you are predicting what would happen) its filmed on a handy cam, and stars Bjork who is amazing. Really have to check it out!

Lately? Um... let me see.
DIG! was pretty funny i thought. Probably the best movie i've seen within the last 4 weeks.
Review: Douche central and beautiful.
Before that, back when i was romantic and cared for that type of thing, i thought Manual of Love was funny.
Review: Italian, and Tomasso was the bombest.

Hmm. Italian. Do you think I will like that one?
;)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang took me completely by surprise and definitely give it :thumb: :thumb: (and that's from someone who hates any sort of hollywood action / thriller)
Inside Deep Throat was also great
Other than those two the last film to really affect me was Mysterious Skin - so very very good.

i saw the first rambo film the other day and was very pleasantly surprised.
i was expecting the all out artillery that is usually associated with the films but instead was met with a seriously good movie showing the effects of the vietnam war.
seriously, if you havent seen the film, i recommend you do. FIRST BLOOD.

Saw an excellent and bizarre spanish film recently called 'Intacto' about these guys that enter into these underground gambling competitions and wager with their luck and the luck of others that they've won along the way.
Awesome twist at the end too.

Hired out "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly". Absolutely loved it. The scenary is stunning. The musical score kicks arse. The smooth talking of Clint Eastwood dominates.

I've seen this. I loved it.
Foreign films huh?
It's like a poetic dark fantasy. Very clever with a killer finale.
Pretty much the spanish version of Momento.

I went to the movies to see "Saw 2" the sequel to the first one that everyone thought was heaps cool.
I found it quite bad compared to the original. Although the story was different, it was still more of the same. Only this time they had a larger number of characters; and as such they couldn't quite build the characters or their own parts of the puzzle, leaving them seeming like quite hollow and unsubstantiated.
They added a stupid twist at the end to fool you, but realistically I thought it was just one last ditched attempt to make the story actually interesting.
If you havn't seen it, make sure you've seen the first one.
I prefer the first one by a long shot, as it actually has the chance to build th e two main characters and how their stories are intwined, which makes it all the more interesting in the end.

Tais-toi (2003)
(Subtitled)
Staring: Jean Reno & Gérard Depardieu
Written & Directed: Francis Veber
Highly recommended
It’s a laugh out loud movie the whole way through...
Basically, it is about 2 thieves, (one big time, one small time)
They meet by accident, and then they go on an adventure....
It’s more to do with the relationship that develops between the 2 characters, rather than wowing you with plot twist and special effects etc...
very well acted.
Simple but witty, and very very effective.

yeah Tais-toi was a fun film - the plot development was utterly predictable and the ending was a mug, however the film is powered extremely well by the two leads. some of the humor is crude and obvious, yet the chemistry between reno and depardieu emote each scene with charm and subtilty to make this a funny movie.
this film has been playing on world movies lately so try to check it out if you can - it's an ideal light-hearted flick for those sunday arvo hangovers.

oh, and i have also seen a perplexing film called Masked & Anonymous starring bob dylan - fukn weird movie that had me flipping, mentally. though i had no idea what was going on half the time, there is no doubt that bob dylan is one cool mutherfucker.

Oh. I havent seen it but nearly purchased it a number of times.
Bummer.
Will have to pick up next time.
Another one... The Velvet Goldmine.
Top flick, again a bit f*cking wierd.
A superbly written fictional tale based on the story and life of David Bowie.
Setting the story in two separate eras: 1971-1974, when Britain's glam rock reigned supreme, and 1984. Arthur Kent (Christian Bale) a journalist researching the whereabouts of a '70s singer/performer named Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers), who disappeared from the public view after his on-stage "assassination" was revealed to be a hoax. Back in the glam rock era, Kent had been a fan of Slade's, and now he finds himself interviewing people he once gazed upon from afar.
That is all I'll give you on this little number....
I am sure many of you have seen this, if not, get to it!
It's one of my old time fav's

It deals with some really interesting issues. Its a british film set in africa. Recently nominated for best film at the golden globes.

funny thats what i was going to say when I saw this thread.
A bit of an overly convoluted plot in some parts and basically Sienna Miller's character could've been chopped all together but overall great.

Ummm. This story was about one very stuffed up young lady. It's allright, but there are some definite moments of  what are you doing woman etc like when she sleazes onto her mum's boyfriend.. Reminded me on some girls I went to school with. Very nicely shot, but i found the guy playing her love interest more interesting and it didn't really deal with any of their issues.
Oh yeah, and I loved the velvet goldmine.
Aeon Flux was pretty good. My g/f fell asleep though, so that says something.
Revolver - the new Guy Richie film. It's awesome like his others but even more confusing. I'm not sure if the end has been edited to confuse illegal downloaders but we'll see when it gets a full release. I didn't get the end at all. Has anyone else seen it? Please explain!

I went and saw it the other day, and I really liked it...
my film loving friend chloe wrote this in her blog about it...
"The film was engaging, and Clooney should be lauded for his screenplay and direction. On that note, David Strathairn did justice to Edward R. Murrow in a way that I doubt many actors could. I could wank on for a paragraph or two, however I feel it would be wasted: just see the fucking film."

Apparently Shaolin Soccer is meant to be good as well, done by the same director.
Kung Fu Hustle is a pretty bizarre movie; the director must like the old 50’s movies as well, with the big old cars and the suits.

I've been meaning to see this film in ages. It was worth it, but it didn't really blow me away. Soundtrack was a bit too much of an over indulgent neil young wankfest. Solid acting and some cool cameos.

I watched "Good Luck, and Good Night" at the Dendy lastnight.
Debut production by George Clooney about the role that Ed Munroe and CBS played in exposing Joseph McCarthy's dodgy fearmongering methods during the communist witchhunts. A little bland and slow at times, but is beautifully shot in black and white and has a very sweet 50's jazz/Billie Holliday style soundtrack throughout. Excellent casting aswell.

Don't know if there was a thread on this one, but I saw "The Constant Gardener" last night and its excellent. Its by the same director as "City of God" which is also a brilliant film.
Its about big bad evil pharmaceutical companies and f#cking over africa. Scary thing is that even though it was a fictional, something kept telling me all the way through it could easily be a true story.
Is this thread worth turning into a sticky??

Read the book, very keen to see this film.
I saw Shaun of the Dead a couple of nights ago - classic.
And i have "What the Bleep Do We Know" waiting for me over the weekend.
I've seen a lot of films lately.
These are the ones i loved.
Fallen Angels (1996, Hong Kong)
This film was brilliant. Very well made with a slick soundtrack.
The movies style is noir. It does follow the characteristics of noir films in that it has many parts shot in black and white and the whole movie is set at night etc etc. The characters are all very real, yet very isolated and flawed, i guess they seem very disillusioned, the fact that voice overs are used to explain why and what they feel is a really good way of setting the characters. The atmosphere is one of isolation, gloom and you can sense something very sad or bad is going to happen, which sort of does happen.
I had to say the story line confused me initially. But i liked the characters, cinematography and soundtrack.
Sorry if my review is bad. I'm not good at writting etc.

Saw the Chronicles of Narnia tonight, and I enjoyed it. It had heaps of potential to be a real epic like LOTR, but otherwise, it did a pretty good job.
I haven't read the books, so I had no pre-conceived ideas, but Lucy was gorgeous, the plot worked well, and its definitely more suitable for a younger audience.
A bit cheesy, some bodgy acting, but the SFX/CGI were awesome.

Thankyou, i really enjoyed it.
They wern't wrong about the all star cast, plus i rate Kieran over Macualay Culkin any day!! Igby (Kieran Culkin) is a sarcastic, antagonistic self-defeating punk who cant seem to make anything of his considerable advantages in life, but the actor brings such humanity to his character that his struggle to find himself takes on real urgency. God I love it, and he plays it so so well. This movie is a must see!
I may have to re-live Welcome To The Dolls House, that used to be a favorite!
Next on my list to finally see is Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang!

Saw The Secretary yesterday, thanks Dave, your a gem!!

Mini review....haha
Lee (Maggie Gyllenhaal ) has just been released from a mental institution where she was treated for her self-mutilation tendencies. Whenever the stress in her life becomes unbearable, she removes a sharp object from a small bag she carries and cuts herself repeatedly. In an attempt to fend off her condition, she decides to look for a job, and finds employment for a stern, emotionally closed-off lawyer, E. Edward Grey (James Spader).
At first, Lee's job entails little more than the daily rigors expected of a secretary - answering the phones, typing letters, and so forth. Gradually, however, Edward becomes more domineering in reprimanding Lee for typos, both Lee and Edward realize they have stumbled upon a taboo desire that fulfills them both. However, while Lee relishes her part as the submissive (to the point where she intentionally makes mistakes so she can be "corrected"), Edward is tormented by his inability to give up his addiction to domination. Only when Lee begins to express genuine feelings for Edward does he become frightened enough to put an end to the non-business aspects of their relationship. Lee is crushed - and realizes that she loves Edward.
Secretary is less about sex than it is about human interaction outside of what society deems normal. Through S&M, Lee finds a cure for her self-mutilation and a reason to go to work every day. Edward, however, is terrified of his own desires - frightened that someone might find out, yet unable to stop. More than the S&M, however, Edward is scared of Lee - in particular, what she feels for him and where his emotions for her are leading him. The issue of traditional sex isn't introduced until relatively late in the film (although you don't have to be a psychologist to determine that the spankings stand in for sex), and it isn't until the closing moments that Gyllenhaal has a nude scene. ;)
3.5/5
I loved it!
;)
