View Full Version : Top 5 Cinema or DVD releases of 2005

So with 2005 finally pissing off into the sunset and with only 1 more sleep before 2006 for many of you :p it is time to reflect on our favourite movies of the year.
Now, sometimes it's really hard to work out what was released this year and what was released late last year, so you can include any filum (for the Irish out there) that either got it's first cinema release or it's first dvd (or video) release during the last 12 months.
I will have a think about my top 5, but you can be as sure as shit it will include Million Dollar Baby, Crash and Downfall.

Only 5 filums? That’s nay good. I'll go for 10...........
Downfall - Achtung, Das ist eine sehr wunderbar film (apologies for my shit german). If we did not know that this is exactly how it happened this movie could be dismissed for wallowing in senseless and gratuitous violence
Look Both Ways - Who said Aussies can't make a good movie? Bloody brilliant. (Proposition, Little Fish and Wolf Creek were all pretty good too) A movie where you really do feel for the characters and the myriad of disasters and triumphs that makes up everyday life.
Sin City - At long last somebody has been able to successfully adapt the world of the comic book/graphic novel to the big screen. A truly original visual masterpiece
Sideways (was that this year?) - This film allowed me to momentarily suspend my misgivings about the much maligned 'buddy/road trip' genre. Then I remembered the crimes against humanity perpetrated by Seann William Scott various abominations. Nonetheless it’s a top film.
Bad Education - Almodóvar is as reliable as a Swiss watch when it comes to making quality films. He is also as odd as a $6 note, a trait that makes his movies so unique. This tortuous tale of the lives and loves of two ex-orphans is trademark Almodóvar.
The Sea Inside - Is life worth living if you cannot do so with dignity? This stellar movie tackles the issue of whether or not we have a right to life or death in a charming and unsentimental way. The fact that is based on a real man's fight for the right to die makes it all the more poignant.
Crash - A study of the fear and loathing inherent in modern day America and the loneliness caused to yourself by alienating others. Crash is a day in the life of a group of seemingly disparate characters whose lives are all inextricably linked.
Broken Flowers - Bill Murray shows the theatrical impact that can be gained from a simple look of bemused disinterest; he is the very antithesis of the Mariah Carey school of OTT acting. Jarmusch makes (imo) his best film yet and the supporting cast were also in fine fettle. Broken Flowers makes the list for the 'Lolita' scene alone, funny, funny shit.
Good Night & Good Luck - George Clooney reaffirms his position as the leading liberal in Tinseltown. Instead of staging some pointless demonstrations or harping on about some utopian political solutions (take note Sean Penn) he does what he does best; make movies. Murrow's takedown of McCarthyism is especially relevant in today's political climate. Watch out for Syriana.
*****. My 5 Star, silver bullet, triple A choice for the year was Wallace & Grommit. I know it was a movie for nippers but it was probably the best thing I have ever seen (and I have seen the face of God). A movie that doesn't seek to patronise anybody and neither does it hold back on laughs for the cynical adults. The most uproariously, good humoured movie I can remember.

The Wire Season 1
The Wire Season 2
Not sure if anyone has been able to catch this series on TV, but its definitely my fav at the moment.
Little Fish
Brilliantly acted. Kudos to Hugo Weaving for giving such a convincing performance. My only gripe was the hodge podge accent from Dustin Nguyen.
I also received last month the box set of Naruto. A japanese animated series in the vein of Dragonball / Teknoman etc.
BEST ANIMATED SERIES EVER.

little fish-brilliant film! such a big fan of Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett
Head On-it's a German film about a Turkish girl who's trying to escape her protective muslim parents, she just want's to get out and live life and the only way she can is to marry another turk, it's a brilliant film, well worth a look! bit violent in places and a fair amount of drug use.., it came out on dvd this year. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347048/
Der Untergang-the ultimate film on the last days of the 3rd Reich, no need for another film about it, was lucky enough to score the limited edition double dvd!
Saw 2-don't mind a bit of psychotic violence, Tobin Bell was fantastic!
i do recommend that anyone loving a good movie, take out head on! it's a brilliant film, i can't recommend it enough!
overrated
million dollar baby-didn't like it, thought it was a bit of a let down
few others that i can't think of just now, seen so many flicks this year.
flying daggers-well it's just not crouching tiger, the art work was awesome, just didn't enjoy the story.
Bad Education - Almodóvar is as reliable as a Swiss watch when it comes to making quality films. He is also as odd as a $6 note, a trait that makes his movies so unique. This tortuous tale of the lives and loves of two ex-orphans is trademark Almodóvar. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
My additional 3:
Mysterious Skin - so very very awesome the uncomfortable feeling it left you with upon leaving was great.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - For me to list a hollywood action flick starring Val Kilmer in my top 5 there must be something bloody good about it!
Garden State - a nice snuggle under the doona film
DVD: Seinfeld Volume 5 + 6 Special Edition simply because it comes with a bonus "Puffy Shirt" replica.

Forget the past. Let us cast our eyes to the future. As we speak I am lasciviously licking my liver coloured lips and suggestively caressing my ample manhood in apprehension for the following.........
Syriana - Mr Clooney is on a roll at the moment. Well done George.
The New World - Shocks come on 2 fronts. #1 Colin Farrell in a good movie. #2 Terrence Malick takes less than a decade to direct another film.
Brokeback Mountain - Ain't no cowboy like a gay cowboy
History of Violence (somebody has already said they have seen it, I thought it wasn't released yet) either way its meant to be top notch flick
A Cock & Bull Story - Anybody else who has read Tristram Shandy will agree with the general consensus that it would be impossible to make it into a coherent film, yet somehow I hear that A Cock & Bull Story has pulled it off.
"The Misadventures of Senor Imperial Tee and his quest for the holy banana" - A stunning 6 hour epic directed by Scorsese and starring a disinterred Marlon Brando as Dr. Imperialis Teeopolis a dashingly brave young doctor who cures 14th Century Paris of its addiction to midget porn.
I thought it was my sparkling wit, love of boobs and trash TV addiction ?
those things are all very important also

Well, let's face it.... no one else wants it :PI didn't mind Batman Begins for the (semi)decent story line, and a lot darker then previous efforts...
Just watched Sin City the other night, not bad, but not the best movie I've ever seen. Maybe cause I already knew how all the stories went etc?
But for the whole atmosphere / catching the imagery of Frank Miller's graphic novels? Spot on the money, 10/10 in that regard for me; it looked excellent and is probably the best comic book/graphic novel to movie adaption I have ever seen.

Add RAY starring Jamie Foxx to my nominations for film of the year. Shiiit boy, that man could sing.
bout time someone made a batman filum that had a real batman in it. a tortured, fucked up, brutal and malevolent foe of evil. A Dark Knight. A nemesis for every two bit, punk ass, malformed psycho baddy. And they end it with a brilliantly subtle hint at a second instalment. If you want to see the real dichotmus tenacious thug slash pilar of society batman movie, the one I used to say best portrayed the batman character I knew from the comics, check batman vs dracula, the animated one. Batman punches holes in his gloves beating the shit out of vampires. You tell em, Bruce. someone show this to the directors before they go and fuck it up by resolving shit in comic book based movies. There's not meant to be an end. You tell the begining near the middle, in parts, and it never ends, it just goes n , day to shitty day, with the heros suiting up and stepping out because, well, because someone has to.
Sin City. A movie I looked forward to with a mix of trepidation and anticipation. My all time fave graphic novel writ large on the silver screen. The only other movie all year I deemed worthy of the closed eyes and blocked ears treatment whenever trailers came on, to say I had high expectations is like saying as couple of people got ipod nanos for christmas. I managed to be delighted and astonished at the sheer brilliance in bringing the high contrast, low key, film noiresque style off the page and onto a screen. The cinematography was awesome. A complete rip off of the visual style of the books, which of course is exactly what fans of the source material wanted to see. Sin city wasn't like the other books. It didn't look the same, it didn't feel the same, it didn't cover the same subject matter. It was white man's manga, you felt seedy and heavy just reading it, having those stories turning over in your brain while the other kids were talking about what was happening on neighbors and home and away. It was a secret, vile world, a city you'd only ever visit alone, exchanging knowing nods at comic book stores when you found someone else looking at the hard copy version you'd been salivating over for six months. And for once, Hollywood didn't fuck up something awesome. Frank wouldn't let them. Oh, it had a happy ending. kinda happy, anyway. still, a happy ending that got there by visiting every backalley in sin city on the way. Fair trade, I guess. And what was that I read today about a Sin City 2?
Narnia. run me a warm bath and fetch me a bottle of vodka while I tell the nice people how gutted I am that I can't include Narnia on this list.
Wolf Creek. fuck you afi pink mafia. nuff said.
Kung Fu Hustle. Most suprising inclusion on this list, showing that China's mainland film industry is every bit as awesome as the hong kong counterpart. I've been into chinese film for a good many years, this one had pretty much every reason why thrown in. Love the chinese sense of humor, it's so fucked up.
if i can think of anything else worthy, I'll be back.

IMO Crash was the most overrated release of 2005. I was quite impressed with the first three quarters of it then found the endings absolutely ridiculous and not believable. The part when the little girl runs out to daddy just as the store owner shoots him/her was hollywoodcrap laughable!

I liked Crash - very poignant expose of the racial undercurrents in all sectors of the American community. I cried for ages when the little girl almost got shot.
Best movie I have seen recently was Hotel Rwanda. Very thought-provoking and harsh to watch - especially when you think that it was an actual event that has happened in my lifetime. I loved the bit when the UN officer (Nick Nolte) was telling Paul Rusesabinga (sp? Don Cheadle) how the Western countries all decided to abandon Rwanda and the bus leaving with all the white people on it.

'The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill' saw it on DVD last night was released in the cinemas last year.
Most definantly one of the best films I have ever seen.
http://www.wildparrotsfilm.com/
'This remarkable movie is the true story of a Bohemian St. Francis and his remarkable relationship with a flock of wild red-and-green parrots. Mark Bittner, a dharma bum*, former street musician in San Francisco, falls in with the flock as he searches for meaning in his life, unaware that the wild parrots will bring him everything he needs.'
Beautiful camera work, no special effects, a true love story which will leave you with tears of happiness.
