View Full Version : online bookstores
Has anyone had any experience of on line bookstores? Just wondering whether they are actually any cheaper than the proper shops. At first glance they don't appear to be any cheaper at all. Would be interested if anyone has any recommendations.

I buy books from amazon.com all the time. This is mainly niche books which are not printed in Australia. I find it is both cheaper and faster to do this than order through a local book store. I usually buy several items at once to spread delivery charges.
Annoyingly I've found that the online bookstores are more expensive if you factor in shipping which, unless you're looking for a rare book or live in whoop whoop, makes the whole concept silly

I'm in exactly the same position - I only buy professional books online, and often things that need to come from overseas.

Ok, i will try and stop now.....
1. Bumping an old thread.
2. Adding these: www.thenile.com.au / www.bookworm.com.au / www.abebooks.com
3. Requesting more. Australian stores get extra points, localised searching (ala eBay's postcode search) gets a hug.
Have used Booktopia (http://www.booktopia.com.au/) before, and recommend.

I've gotten a few textbooks from Abe.
Have paid a fraction of what you typically pay here incl shipping. The only slight downside is that they're usually Paki/Indian eds, which means shitty/flimsy paper and general make.
not really a bookstore, but ebay can be great for bargains

Amazon UK ftw :thumb:. It generally works out to be a lot cheaper than the main (US) Amazon site because shipping from the US is a fuggen ripoff.
wow. the last time i posted in this thread was '06!! wow. if only i could go back in time and tell old filou about all the mistakes and joys to come.
anyway everyone should try www.booko.com.au

I use Abbey Books quite a lot. Fast delivery too, if in Sydney.

Yeah, I was wary of that when ordering some Uni text books from Abe. You just need to make sure you're not ordering the 'International Edition' and you'll be sweet.
I think I paid around $170 for two text books that would have cost me over $300 in the Uni shop.
There's also Alibris which is pretty much an Abe clone. Abe had better prices for the particular books I wanted though.
