Will be in Germany from 19th January till 3rd March.
I will be based in Berlin for the predominant time in Feb.
Does anyone have any tips on places (as in clubbing venues) to go?
Berlin is huge and the venues are often changing. To get the local info when you arrive head toward this hostel called The Circus (well worth staying here if you haven't got a place to stay yet). Only a few doors up the road from it is a record store where the staff always tell you what's the best club at the time - plus they have free internet. Also they do Nightlife tours, which are not pub crawls but show you the underbelly of Berlin - most the places we went to there were only Germans which was great.
Not clubbing but worth doing is Terry Brewer's walking tours. Only tour i did in my six months of travel as i prefer exploring myself and I loved it.
Try find the squatter settlement series of bars and clubs - well worht it. The people at the hostel and record store will know if you mention squatter bars etc. Here is an excerpt from an email I sent back home about Berlin. It has some descriptions of clubs etc.

I then got roped into a nightlife tour of Berlin by my room mates. It spanned the King Kong Klub (a punk bar), a local pub style establishment, Druides (an absinthe bar) and ended in the Berger Club. The most interesting bar however was a mock-living room set-up with couches and general living room furnishings and cutlery. Strange? Well the idea is that the students who only have a bedroom and a kitchen can bring down their food and have their own space to veg out. Not a bad idea and there are dozens of these places around.
We also checked out the East Side Gallery which is the longest remaining chunk of the Wall. It was painted by artists when the Wall came down and now serves as an outdoor gallery type thing - quite amazing.
...
In the evening we ventured out again, this time to a former bomb bunker turned live venue. You could still see the candle holders at 3 different heights which served as indicators for oxygen levels when the candles went out in the always overcrowded shelters. The music was all solo guitarist slash singer and wouldn´t have been out of place on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. The melancholic grooves complimented the near dark interior and the resulting atmosphere was fantastic.
We then trekked around the corner to a partly bombed building now inhabited by squatters. No square of the interior walls, roof or floor was free of some sort of graffiti or art. There were 3 bars on various levels and in between were art galleries where artists hung their recent canvasses and were hanging around themselves discussing their latest work with a handful of critics and a few prospective buyers. This was all at 2am on a Thursday night mind you.
We chose the top level open air bar where the DJ doubled as the barman. The vista was incredible: two projectors sprayed images from the building to a 20 metre high wall across 50 metres of derelict land. One projection was simply a spider web whilst the other was an old black and white film played backwards. The atmosphere this created is extremely difficult to explain but let´s just say it left an impression!

Enjoy. Berlin has so much history. Make sure you learn about it
Tresor club is closed now. It is now on only occasionally at a club near the East Side Gallery, whose name escapes me, on a wednesday.

Tresor is on every Wednesday at the Maria, easily my favourite club in Berlin. Get yourself to the Maria on a Wednesday, if absolutely goes off!
I highly recommend the recently renovated Sunflower Hostel in Friedrichsein. Globetrotter around the corner is good too, not as nice but the owners are lovely and always passing around scoobs and free Becks. Friedrichsein is by far the coolest area I found, really cheap cafes/restaurants and good for people-watching. Also a short walk to the Eastside gallery which houses the Maria and a couple of other cool bars along the Spree river.
Other must-see clubs are Watergate, WMC (Summer residence is the best but it might be bit cold for that at the mo), Polar TV...so many. Hit the local press when you get there and prepare to be amazed...
enjoy!
Yeah the Maria - that's the one. Quite hard to find the first time as it just looks like a derelict building along the river...
There's also clubs such as Deep, weekend and Club de visionäre.
Deep is open on weekends and such. Very nice underground gothic bunker thingy. One room for chillin ( filled with beds) and two rooms for dancing. really cool place.
Weekend is really nice place. Located at Alexanderplatz next to the tv/radio tower. The club is on 8th floor and the wiew is awesome!
There is lot's of clubs in the Alexanderplatz area and the clubs really go on and on and on... the night seems to never end.
I spent my NYE in Berlin and fell in love with the place. So much to do and see and clubs to go to! :)
just my 2cents :)

Last time i went to Berlin (jan this yr) i stayed at the Sunflower too. I highly recommend it. The guys that run are very cool & most importantly its CLEAN!!! I've been Berlin a couple times now its by far my favourite place in Europe. There is so much to see. Especially if you're art & culture freak like me. Friderichsen is more alternate (i.e. similar to Newtown) heaps of cool cafes, bars & an arthouse cinema.
Maria :thumb: great venue to see local bands.
Berlin is definitely a city i would love to live in.
