View Full Version : lost: canberra's mojo

i don't know what's going on, but canberra clubbers seem to be becoming really apathetic or something ... attendance these days for interstate/credible djs is shite (not that an interstater is necessarily credible) ... are we becoming too spoilt for choice, knowing that if we don't go out this weekend, doesn't matter because there will be something good on next weekend?? or has the variety of musical styles and types of djs being brought to canberra encouraged punters to be more picky about when they go out? hopefully summer will see a change in attitude, canberra's losing its mojo.

Actually I partly agree with you livian. I was at Babylon last fiday nite for Phil Smart and Kid Kenobi and the place was half empty, and in my opinion these DJ's are more then just credible. However despite the obvious lack in attendance I still felt the great vibe exerted from Canberra punters. So maybe the mojo is still there, but perhaps we are just getting worn out from too much fun. Or maybe it is, what you suggested, different tastes in music. I certainly hope we are not getting spoilt as we are getting such great quality dj's in our little town and it would be a shame to lose the humble and enthusiastic nature that is a common trait to all Canberra party people.

I was wondering the same thing why hardly people were at babylon because i hadn't heard such quality beats in a long time. if we keep this up, djs won't want to travel to our city and the promoters won't want to put on the events. so to save all that complaining time when we start to have fewer events, let's get out there and support these things. there's no doubting the quality of the music especially when you have guys like phil smart and kid kenobi playing. the more we all get going to these events, the bigger, better and more frequent they'll get. we've had so many good things on and things will just grow bigger if it gets more support. so if you want to help the scene, stop bitching and moaning and get out more often.

I think a lot of people were having a rest this weekend due to Revolution/Gatecrasher.

"I have a feekling not many will come to Latyrx..."

yeah, it's hard to pull ppl on a thursday night (as whipchaa proved), at least hip-hop heads will be out in force, and people who really are going "for the music". mexi's ace and it'll be good to see wepon play.

oh well optimus r, take solace in the fact that stanton warriors is going to be hooj (if that's your thang).

read above that Phil Smart / Kid Kenobi was half empty, I feel bad coz I wanted to go and do some serious dancing for a few hours. unfortunately some friends held me down and made me drink lots of strawberry margueritas at their place instead and the next thing I know its 7am and we're on parliament house. bastards...

does anyone else out there feel a slight bit of guilt for not going out to good stuff? here in CBR the term "supporting" events has a whole special meaning... its this obligation/pride thing that our itsy bitsy town can party-above-its-weight...

yeah... i feel bad everytime i miss something good... like when freaky business was on the same night fang got shut down, it was hard not to go that extra $$ go pay for a cab out freaky business and get in... but i just couldnt afford it.
But i try... and just coz i go to lots of twisted events doesnt mean i dont try to go to other things... will be very much looking forward to a GMAN club night...

But then... i think its worse all my friends who wont pay a cover charge so they wont experience anything new... sacrifice one drink and go to somewhere cool instead of southpacs you dickheads... thats why i feel bad for the canberra scene - the amount of idiots who limit themselves by following their crowd, not going and finding stuff out for themselves...

having said all that stuff in the first post i made, it's not like we should feel guilty for not going out! i just don't think we can complain when nothing comes to town if we don't support good stuff. but when there is a small crowd, i am embarassed, esp if a good dj is playing. my hedonistic attitude is, it's summer, be prepared to spend a bit more because having fun is so much more fun when the sun is shining and it's warm than when it's icy and frosty ... warped logic i know ... just me trying to justify my growing credit card debt.

ps: alistair, what year are you at uni?

Hmmm...

It seems out of most of the people I've talked to in the last week are either going to the coast or staying in Canberra; not very many seem to be going up to Sydney for Welcome 2002 or any of the other big NYEs.
I think Stantons / Tayo will be the go for a big night; in the absence of any real NYE action in Canberra...I for one am really looking forward to having a big night among my fellow dance folk in my hometown...get to get home early hours of the morning and stay up in my own house and talk rubbish with friends till dawn...rather than do the spend lots of cash in Sydney thing this year:)

Having said that, I think the turn out on the night for Latryx might surprise us!

Realistically... I would be suprised if Latyrx doesnt sell out. One of the most critically aclaimed hip-hop acts in the world... And unlike other acclaim, everyone whos ever heard them knows its justified. I wont care so much if it doesnt sell out, as feel sorry for the poor bastards who miss out...

Yeah I agree Alistair I suppose I just dont have much hope in the hip-hop community in Canberra, it extends little beyond wannabe thugs hailing DMX as the greatest now that Tupac has gone and they need someone else to exaggerate about! But you're right, anyone whos heard of em will be there as they are aware of the talent...I just dunno how many ppl DO know... but it dont matter!
