View Full Version : Unexplained weight loss

I have no idea what's going on but I've dropped 5 kilos over the past month and I've no idea why. I did have a cold for a week or so but I ate normally throughout, and I haven't eaten any healthier/worse or done any more any more/less exercise or drunk any more/less than I usually do.

The only thing that's changed is I've stopped drinking juice and I've replaced it with lots of water, but that's nowhere near an explanation for losing 5ks. It's seriously freaking me out!

I need to figure out how I'm doing it. Then I need to patent the method and sell it on infomercials starring Chuck Norris and Vanessa Williams. I can smell the money already!

(PS before anyone insinuates it, no I don't partake in 'substances' of any kind so no, that's not the reason!)

might just be the water.... juice is high in sugar, and it's something they ask you to stop when you go to whale watchers.

Damn if I dropped 5kg in a month I'd be happy, maybe I should cut out the fruit juice too... but seriously gget it checked out, it might be nothing but best to be on the safe side.

Some days I lose 5kg over night.
I'd say it's 90% water. The rest is probably glycogen and fat.

juice is a concentrated source of kilojoules so that could be part of it

also have you been nervous/stressed lately? You may have been fidgeting a lot more than normal without realising and this will also burn up a lot of kjs

Your GP will know more though

Go see a doc, but all that weight loss can definitely be attributed to the replacement of juice with water.

Juice contains all of the sugar of about 10 pieces of fruit per glass, but none of the fibre.

that's where i stole it from

not that you ever needed to go.

i agree...juice could have quite a substantial effect on your weight - some of it is just as sweet as soft drink or cordial! you've not only cut back on carbs by cutting it out, you've also removed yourself from an insulin see-saw (insulin regulates blood sugar) which could have quite a large effect on both your appetite and how you hold weight.

that said, you could just have a really bad case of worms, a thyroid problem, stress, or even cancer (one of the earlier signs, another early sign is night sweats).

before you waste $75 on a doctor's consult (goddamn you absence of bulk billing clinics and production line treatment at places that do bulk bill) go and spend $15 on some worm tablets at the chemist. be sure to wash your sheets and change your underwear the same day you take them :p.

it could be the juice, but if you lose any more weight see yoru doctor.

Marzy
06-Feb-06, 02:08pm
Funnily enough if you're drinking more water you will expel more water, which could go part of the way to explaining the weight loss.
The removal of juice would also play a small part, but prob like 0.5kg.
Trust me dude, it's mostly just water weight.

Supa - are you serious? $75? I don't pay to see the doctor or get blood tests. Hell even seeing the plastic surgeon about my surgical scar tissue didn't cost me a cent.
Medical centres ftw :thumb:

1 piece of fruit = 20-30g sugar.
200-300g of sugar per glass of juice ey?

pardon my ignorance, but during summer dont most people lose more weight as a result of sweating more, being more active and less sitting around devouring popcorn watching telly?
that and i generally find its too hot to eat big meals/cook heavy food which leads to stomach shrinkage and blah blah blah.
on the other hand 5kgs could either be a good or bad thing depending on how much it is proportianl to your usual weight. eg. if you 70kgs, probably not too much to worry about, but if your 50 then it most certainly is.

midian
06-Feb-06, 06:36pm
Thanks for the response guys. Yeah I was 70kgs and am now down to 65kgs. I don't mind being this size but if I drop another 5kgs to 60 or so I'll start looking really unhealthy I think.

Forgive the silly question, but don't you get an itchy arsehole if you've got worms? I ask because mine certainly isn't!

Ms LKT
06-Feb-06, 06:46pm

not always in adults, its kids who normally get the itchy arse syndrome I think...

go to your Doc silly and put your mind at ease :)

If you experience sudden weightloss go and see your doctor - it may be nothing, it may be something.

Make sure you get your thyroid checked out.

what they said ^^ I have pretty serious weight problems at times and can drop from 55 to below 50 in a few weeks but it sounds to me like you are fairly healthy. Probably no big deal, I'm sure plenty of people would kill to be able to lose weight that easy :P

SpaceMonkey
06-Feb-06, 10:14pm
Probably stating the obvious but how many times did you weigh yourself? My weight can easily fluctuate 2-3kg in a day depending on my hydration levels and whether I've recently eaten or taken a shit. An apprent 5kg weight loss could easily have actually only been 2kg or less in terms of tissue etc once those factors are accounted for.

Leave a chunk of meat in your bed.

If it's covered in worms in the morning you have your answer.

They crawl out of your arse and go fetch the fresh meat.

:D

Please note I have never done this. I think if I suspected I had them I just take combantrim and be done with it. I ain't sleeping with a piece of prime rump that isn't attached to my gorgeous fella.

Apparently it works though.

Weight loss like that can be attributed to lotsa things, even minor changes in diet(no matter how small they are!), or other things like increased stress at work, being sick (colds etc) and any other host of things. As far as diet goes, if you accidently skip a meal every once in a while that could have an impact!!

that is all

Go and see a doctor. I had unexplained weight loss and let it go on for far too long without doing anything about it. It's not worth it when all it takes is a 5 minute consultation to either give you peace of mind or treat the problem.

That would account for about 1/2kg at the most.

I think you're worrying over nothing. If you lose another 5-10kg then go get some blood tests to check out your hormones.

There's 29 grams of sugar in a can of coke smartass... I aimed a little high, but say 6 pieces of fruit per glass, your looking at more sugar than coke.

x 5 glasses a day, well..... you get my drift.
