Can anyone give me any clues about second hand record shops in canberra????

evilchris

Yes...as a hardcore cratedigger of second hand records, my faves are Revolution CD civic and belconnen...always the two stores with the highest turnover of electronic stuff...See you there, and tell Jeff and Dan in Rev Civic that evilchris sent you....

as a fellow cratedigger of the most seriously addicted variety, thanks!

so what are the addresses of these places?

if there are any others feel free to list them...

cheers

Well, Revolution Civic is probably the store with the highest flow-through
of new music; it's located down in the Civic Bus Interchange just across
from the Civic Library; otherwise Belconnen (just down the road from the
front of the mall is also good (and also for some reason their pricing seems
slightly lower than the Civic store. If you go into the Civic store...Geoff
or Dan will be able to help you find what you're after...
Are you new to Canberra? If you want to know anything about other stores ,
I'd be more than happy to assist.

Take care,

Amen to that! As a fellow vinyl fan a serious hole exists in terms of
Canberra's second hand vinyl market. At the moment, the only place that
sells / buys 2nd hand vinyl is Landspeed (they have a range of record bins
below the main vinyl section) I went in and offloaded a pile of my old stuff
recently, and they seem to be a bit more discriminating in terms of what
they'll take (they only grabbed the biggest toons I was getting rid off, and
refused to take any of my dnb (and this was good labels like Full Cycle /
Moving Shadow). I'm seriously considering seeing if anyone wants to take
them off my hands thru ITM forum....
Unfortunately apart from that, Revolution doesn';t touch vinyl (I've tried
to tell them on anumber of occaisions that they could do it as a specialist
collector thing...ie. only buy really good vinyl on the condition that it's
in good nick...

I too have discovered the secret vinyl stores. I'm not a dj so it is of no use to me but alas for you unenlightened I am sworn to secrecy.

calico

maan all this lame secrecy bizness is driving me mad!

pretty soon i am going to explode! and that won't be a pretty sight... intestines and blood and guts and all sorts of horrible stuff all over the place.

so someone better front up with some useful info soon or the cleaning bills will be forwarded to you!

Hey calico,
To be perfectly honest (and speaking from the point of view of someone who surfs the varied vinyl bins of the ACT constantly); there aren't very many places you can get good vinyl in Canberra apart from a few of the specialist stores and some other avenues (in fact, I'd be surprised if anyone could name more than 5 good places). If there's a secret Jedi vinyl stockade somewhere I Canberra, I'm yet to see it (and I've spent years doing the record trove. Your best bets are Landspeed and Impact...they can always order things in that you want, you might just have to get it a week or two after it hits Sydney. Otherwise, every few weeks, I like to do the Sydney trip (which makes me understand why when I'm in Canberra, I feel like my vinyl hoard kicks, but when I go see friends in Melbs / Sydney, I just go hrrr...) Sadly, we don't got that many stores, but stuff like inthemix at least gets us all the right place together so we can declare solidarity for the black plastic..

Oh yeah and one other thing (evilchris' head pops back up)

Having said all that, I would be lying if I said I didn't have one secret arcane Canberra vinyl source (I do). However.. this is mainly for samples and scratching tools, not so much home listening.

But (as they used to say at the end of those crappy seventies BBC kid's shows),

that's story for another time...

Most of the juicy vinyl I've gotten in Canberra is from op shops.

About 2 years ago I scored Grand Master Flash 'Greatest Messages' for $1 !!!!

dickson vinnies is a good 1.

also trash & treasure in belco/woden......oh @!#$ da boss!! gotta go!

calico

I agree Sysex, op shops are definitely the source for obscure / hard -to -get vinyl; the other place really worth checking out (believe it or not) is the Lifeline book fair (which seems to pop up every 6 months or so). Last time I went there, I came out with 76 records for around $40, all just really tweaked stuff good for scratching and sampling. I managed to get Beat Street, the original Fat Albert Soundtrack, an entire series of European history vinyl (classic for scratching up), a give up smoking record, and my favourite "Do Not Bring Drugs Into Australia", which is credited to Superintendent "Pat" (their inverted commas, not mine) Collins of the Australian Customs Service.

yeah i've bought records from every imaginable type of retail outlet. you should ask my girlfriend, actually you prob shouldn't - we're doing pretty well at the moment, don't want to mess with that.

but having just come up to the nation's capital, and working my ass to the kerb for the maan i don't have any idea where the black gold is to be found... anyway i'll get my pschidt together pretty soon!
