Well I'm all set for the thrills, chills, and most importantly, spills of the Winter Games. Not that most people here really care. (only say that due to the lack of hype goin on)
Must say it's kind of weird to be watching them while in summer time, but I'm sure I'll adjust.
Just hope I can find somewhere that will be showing the gold medal ice hockey game.

And Go Australia Go. Looks like some genuine medal contenders, especially the guy in moguls.

Oh come on. It is not that elite. the thing is that the countries competing actually have snow. Without a doubt you have some people from less than privelaged backgrounds competing from within those countries.

Good lord. You're about as big a tool as the author of that tripe passing as an article. It doesn't take a moron to figure out that countries who are mostly freezing 6 months of the year will tend to do better, even develop athletes with natural abilities in winter sports.
Yeah, we just have to put up with Chanel7's usual dire showing of it. It's on "live" during the night for us..... and they show crappy 1970s movies instead! :(
What's the coverage like on PayTV? There's events like the downhill, moguls etc where I want to watch the whole field and complete runs as well, well I can hope....
I'm trying to watch the opening ceremony, but channel 7's sorry excuse for high definition is making it impossible with all the artefacting. Seriously when do they plan on broadcasting in 720p or 1080i, all I'm seeing right now is a punch of pixellated colours moving around in what vaguely represents upscaling.
In other news, I love the winter olympics. You get to see some really good events and because we don't dominate in well.....anything, we get to see a whole lot more variety of events : ) Unlike the summer olympics where you get swimming swimming swimming and then an assortment of who knows what just because we suck at everything else.
The next two weeks are going to be nothing but winter games for me :-D

So did channel 7 actually show the mens downhill live tonight, or will they show it tomorrow night and pretend it's live?
Some of those men wiped out big time on the Luge, god that has to hurt. Especially that 52yr old, wiped out but still put his shrivelled nuts on the line and did it again.
I can't believe they are showing the bloody Davis Cup instead of showing more of the Olympic games, what a joke, especially since we aren't getting Live footage of the games.

I'm not a fan of the Winter Olympics - a perfectly natural assertion given we live in a mainly hot and sunny country (sorry people, the largely man-made slopes of Perisher etc. do not count).
And anything that means more Joanna Griggs on our tv has to be considered pure evil.
I would also like to murder whoever was responsible for those unbelievably irritating promo spots involving Steven Bradbury (getting a cab, at the supermarket). The only thing worse than seeing his untalented head on television, is to see it accompanied by a pathetic Titsiana Booberini style 'comedy' ad for Channel 7. Spew.

The Gold Medal match at Salt Lake was one of the best games ever, not just of hockey, but sport over all, but all 7 showed was 10 minutes of pissy highlights. :( and devoted hours and hours to crappy figure skating

Nothing like watching the downhill 24 hrs after it was actually raced.
It's too bad that Channel 7 didn't do a joint bid with Fox Sports so that at least they could show all the hockey games live. Best the thing the CBC did was share the TV contract with a sports network. Between the two, everything was pretty much live, regardless of what time something was on.
Curling is exactly like lawn bowls. Jugs of beer drunk while playing. Plus the added bonus of the beer never getting warm.

I just had to laugh on the fact that American speed skater - Apollo Ohno didn't qualify for the finals........this was the same dude that fell over (in another speed skating event i dunno) in the finals where Steven Bradbury won gold. :P

Shaun White's seriously the best rider on the planet. I thought he would struggle after last years X games when Antti Autti won it pulling off back to back 10's going in switch. I thought the clean living Finns would take over - but the guy's a freak. Sick first run in the final. So far ahead of everyone else competting.
Good to see June Mtn resident Danny Kass get the silver.
Some of the judging seemed pretty strange though. I think it was Autti that pulled off back to back 10's and only got a 39 or something in his second run...?

i wasn't really that impressed with the snowboarding runs, they were doing some much smoother runs at the last x games, a lot more flow than a bunch of 1080's.
and i'm still a grigg's hater, her head is mental huge.
and the downhill was fuggin off the hook, i just got back from a week & a bit of snowboarding in japan & it really helps you appreciate just how insane these guys are. 120 km/h on a pair of skis?

I watched most of last night's coverage.
The downhill is such an intense event. Hermann Maier was a bit disappointing. I thought he would have been a medal contender... His fall at Nagano still makes me blood turn cold... OW! :(
The luge final was awesome... George Hackl aka the sausage slider the nicknamed him for his career... Sad to see him retire in 7th position...
The snowboarding was great. Shawn White was insane, his 1st run was just amazing...

I saw the speed skating 3000 meter relay, it looked really annoying to compete in, i think there are 3 people on a team and they take turns doing 1.5 laps, but if its about to be your turn you dont just stand there waiting, you gotta do a lap to get up to speed, so there is heaps of overlap.
It looks like fucking hard work.

Never saw an update but that did look bad. You could see the point of impact that knocked her out cold and she just slid down the slid of death like a raggy doll.
It looks like theres a bump there, where it should round off smoothly into the corner it increases too dramatically and kicks one side of the luge up and ups them sideways so they go sideways, up the pipe, to the bottom and flicks them back again straight up the side. So many participants have gone off their, I think they are doing sort of investigation into the track because of the remarkable number of crashes they've had in the same region.
I watched the Australian girl go down and was glad to see her make it too the end, even though it was down in position 20 or something it was good to see she made it down where many wiped out.

Dale Begg-Smith should have stayed with his Canadian team, he's definitely far from being australian, at the medal ceremony he didn't appear to know the words to our national anthem and was looking at our flag like it was a foreign object......not good form for someone representing our country.

And there was a Miracle on Ice last night! The US Women LOST to Sweden in the hockey semi's. Holy fuck. After I saw that Canada wiped Finland 6-0, I just figured the US won.
This is great for womens hockey. So long has it been Canada v USA. Now there's some chance it may not always be the US in the finals.

yeah the canadians losing is pretty bad. Here in canada the few people I have spoken to are shocked and ashamed as they put it. I must say though I prefer watching the nhl hockey more than the olympic hockey as the big hits aren't as frequent and there isn't as much fighting.

OMFG Anyone see the women's snowboard cross final? Jacobelis [USA] out in the lead goes for a grab move on the last jump and stuffs the landing handing the gold medal to some lass from Switzerland. :lol::lol::lol::lol:yeah, that was hilarious. so glad it was the USA as well, there all so up themselves like that. served her right
yeah the canadians losing is pretty bad. Here in canada the few people I have spoken to are shocked and ashamed as they put it. I must say though I prefer watching the nhl hockey more than the olympic hockey as the big hits aren't as frequent and there isn't as much fighting.

At least Cindy Klassen won her third medal of this Olympics and still has a chance for a 4th in the womens 1500m long track, which is her best event.

Shit I misread that, it just makes it worse. I really don't follow the NHL that much, but I do pick up bits and pieces when I read denver newspapers for stuff about the Broncos. I have an NHL playstation game as well which is good fun.
When I read the Canadian team when it was announced I thought they would be clear cut winners.

Just saw the good/ news bad new story on the Aerials for Australia.
The good: Cooper in first after a world record jump in qualifying.
The bad: Ierodiaconou blowing out her knee on her second jump.
And at least one Canadian hockey team won a gold. Congrats to the women. Not so sure about that other team.
My cousin crashed in the mens downhill 2nd run. He was coming 7th after the first one :( gutted.

I wasnt really following the games too much other than through a canadian mate/workmate - and cause they didnt seem to show the downhill or hockey at times I wanted to watch but I think the most important thing we seem to be missing in this thread is
no matter how much we suck at winter sports (not having much snow and all) and how little interest channel 7 thinks we have - at least we bat the poms
australia came in 17th place with 1 gold and 1 bronze - Great Britain came 21st with 1 silver
