View Full Version : CDj's VS Turnies
So a mate has upgraded his turnies to better ones and I am thinking of buying his old ones.
However , it seems more and more people are turning to cdj's and I can get a decent deal for not much more on some cdj's but I would have to pay off more per week.
I know the vinyl vs mp3 cost situation but I would probably only be buying second hand vinyl anyway.
Any suggestions ?

Scratch Live
depends on what medium you want to play.... no-one can answer on what you'll be happier with.
the premium setup would be either 2 turntables and one CDJ or visa versa.
Is there anywhere in Sydney where you can buy good dance singles , and I don't mean pop trance and the like , as I don't have a credit card.
Most proper dance tracks (non commercial) never see cd release, its always digital download or vinyl release. At least in Australia, from what i've seen.
I've decided to go with the vinyl option for the mo as I figured I can always convert the vinyls to mp3 and sell the turntables If I want to buy cdj's and I'll be buying mainly second hand for the mo which is cheap enough.
Thanks for the advice everyone!

and a Xone 92 ;)

i was talking on some kind of budget, not dreamland....

if you don't already have a record collection ... go CDJing. This way you can ensure you have all the latest frsh hits without paying $18/12"
It seems that's the easier, quicker option for starters these days
I was thinking of collecting second hand to begin with.
meh, second hand is pretty hard.... you just get the shit that no-one else wants.
you really have to be able to fork out money every week or fortnight to buy tracks.... like $100-$300.... otherwise forget it, buy CDJ's

really ?
i spend about $100 max each fortnight
but i'm more of a music collector first and DJ as a result ... consequently i don't see the need to spend that much money on tunes week in week out ... unless you are trying your hardest to have all the coolest and latest tunes ... NOW
if you want to be a DJ who plays what's shit hot now and want to complain about the price of vinyl ... become a CDJ
If you want to collect and enjoy music ... go both
i don't either.... now
but when i started i did out i did for the first 6-12 months... if not more.
Yeh it would be more of a collector thing for me just what i consider to be gems to keep.
But I'm swinging back to cdj's now as I can get finance which means I have them straight away and buying mp3's off the net is going to save money in the long run.

hey guys some good advice here by all and i need some too.
Im a newbie to DJing and i want to put up a half decent system for mostly hip-hop music. I want to spend bout 1500 on it. I want to buy a numark dxm06 for the mixer and am not sure bout the turntables or cdjs. I dont have any vinyl yet so turntables are prolly not the best option moneywise, but with cdjs is it possible to scratch it and mix it the same way as turntables? Any advice would help and thanks :thumb: :thumb:

isn't there another forum for djing where this thread would be, well appropriate?

i've been thinking about the CDJ thing lately as an option that will be superseded before vinyl ... things like Serato, Final Scratch, Miss Pinky and Torq work a lot better for me ... best of both worlds ... vinyl and digital music ..
CDs will die and other mediums for storing digital music will take over*
(*may or may not have been a dream i had)

even pioneer are showing that (what with the pending release of that new CDJ - the 400 or whatever it is, with a USB input...) - traktor + vinyl ftw

I prefer cdj's, because i can smash the hell out of em. vinyl isn't like that...its more gentle..
I still buy too much vinyl for my own good... I'm a trance freak, and love collecting rekkids, but if I had my time again, I probably would've gone the CDJ route... would've saved a lot of cash in the long run...
moving in with a mate who's got CDJs soon so we'll see how my buying pans out soon...

This thread is a fantastic example of searching before posting.....sorry just wanted to higlight this small breath of fresh air that lightly whisked my cynicism away.....
MP3's burnt to cd FTW for me, can accidently drop the cd a few times then just simply re-burn it and tracks are so much cheaper.....what makes me less of a collector because I collect MP3's and not vinyl? i like opening my itunes and seeing my tracks in different playlist depending on genre, BPM, year, etc....makes me warm and fuzzy...
but on the other hand I am currently looking at adding a TT to my set up (I have an extra channel on my mixer not doing anything so I would be stupid not to get one, well thats how I am justifying it to myself anyway!)

might i just point out that this thread was started in feb 06, probably before the board flooded in recent times with CDJS OR VINYL threads
