Count me in young Warren
PS. Trial games count for nothing my son, so dont worry about that blot scoresheet today. Nor the 40 odd points the others scored.

Roosters won the trial match last night but it has been an expensive win.
Monoghan is out for the season with a knee injury, Harrison has to face the judiciary for a high tackle and may miss the first few rounds and Anasta sat out the game due to a suspected groin strain.
Shocking news for Monoghan :(

I agree he has been pretty disppointing since joining the Roosters, but it's never good news to hear a player is out for the season before the season even starts.

Actually, he improved greatly last season, in a team that went backwards at a rate of knots and apparently he was looking the goods in the trials games.
Easts arent exactly overloaded with Centres as we've had a few move on or retire in recent times.
Lets hope theres a youngster who can fill in.
With Anasta with a bollock strain and Harrison in front of the judiciary, I think that Wayne Bennett has the right idea. Play all your under 18 kids and reserve grade players in trial matches.
You risk so much for so little gain, that it's really not worth it. It's better for your kids to get a hit out against some stronger opposition for a change. Mind you, if everyone followed the same logic, your kids would be playing their kids
i reckon raiders will win the comp this year.
i actually reckon he will go back to the raiders at the end of this year too.

the mighty broncos will be back to their best this year!
got hammered by the cowboys in our last trial match. luckily, trials count for naught. it will be interesting to see hunt at halfback - i reckon he reads the game well and has the vision to succeed at that position (well at least until seymor returns from injury).
looking forward to the start of the season.
i reckon raiders will win the comp this year.
we will have a fucked year..........could even get the wooden spoon which is a tragedy for the club.
that fuckhead elliot should have been given the ass this year. good luck to newcastle, because they paid too much for arguably one of the worst coaches in the comp.
i would love to see David Furner take the reigns for this year and see how he goes.

What exactly did he have to work with, talent wise? Even when the Raiders were leading the comp in 2003, they couldn't score tries. And each year after that they have gotten progressively worse, and failed to attract any decent players.
I reckon Hunt could turn into one of the greats. Such an all round talent. His confidence gives me the shits but he has great hands and vision.
Luckily the trials count for nothing, my poor Tigers got a touch up. That Manly lineup is pretty damn strong on paper and showed potential on Saturday. Poor Prince nearly copped a poudning from boof head Watmough.
Anyone know what caused it exactly?

hahah, they'll be lucky not to win the spoon. I'll still get $6 kids tickets to go and see some of their games though as I always do, they usually start pretty well then fade, hence why they are nicknamed the Faders.

it would be a hard club to coach. he had an ok roster the last two years, but 03 should have been our year dude. he was awesome then. it is easy to blame on the coach but last year was our worst. the two previous years we made the finals. we lost alot of talent and people will think worst case, but have faith! after all mate we are the raiders and anything can happen!

the playing roster was up to him........but he chose not to buy anyone other than adamson, smith and a couple of other no hopers. tactically he leaves a lot to be desired........very poor game plans and virtually no backline moves to speak of. further, no decent juniors have come through under him.
Todd Carney has potential, a proper skilful, ultra competitive halfback in the mould of Gower. He's a local junior isn't he?
Hopefully O'Hara does the business for the Tigers this year, he seems to be much leaner at the moment, compared when he was at his peak playing origin etc.

I find it very hard to judge how Matt Elliott has done with the Raiders. Part of me thinks he has done well, making them competitive and leading them to a couple of finals series with a very average roster in my opinion. They had a very good season the year they lost to the Warriors in the semi by the field goal, so close...Bulgarelli dropped the ball over the line, now look at him, he's been convicted for drug trafficking, lol.
However another part of me thinks Elliott has done a pretty poor job, and I know my friend who is a fanatical Raiders fan thinks that. Every year they start well and fade BADLY, and i agree Elliott's game plan is very basic, just keeps it very simple with the forwards hitting it up all the time. You have to feel sorry for him though when his captain (Woolford) gets suspended for like half a season every year, at least he won't be skipper this year.
I live in the ACT so I always like to see the Raiders do well, but I grew up in Balmain so the Tigers will always be my team. It was sweet last season seeing the Raiders lead something like 16-0 at Canberra Stadium, before the Tigers came storming home in the second half to win it, mwahahahah.
I just hope both sides have a good season.

no decent juniors have come through under him.
You can attribute some of that to the residual fallout of the Super League war, when most of Canberra turned their backs on the sell-out Raiders (myself included - although primarily a Bunnies fan, as a former Canberra girl I gave them the shunt during the War) and moved over to the Brumbies.
The Raiders have only just started winning back some of the crowds they used to take for granted, and aren't as highly regarded around town as they used to be, and luring players to cold, distant Canberra is a hard task - especially when they lack the winning culture other clubs enjoy.
In light of this, it's not surprising that kids like Matt Henjak (heir of league legend Ivan) and others turned to union over league.
So I don't know how much of that is Matt Elliot's fault - I've always been impressed with what he's achieved in spite of those odds. I reckon he'll go well at Panthers. They lack fitness and discipline, two things the Raiders have largely managed to achieve, if failing in all other areas.
Todd Carney has potential, a proper skilful, ultra competitive halfback in the mould of Gower. He's a local junior isn't he?
Hopefully O'Hara does the business for the Tigers this year, he seems to be much leaner at the moment, compared when he was at his peak playing origin etc.
he's ok, but he has no experience around him.
when guys like monaghan go to Easts for the same amount of money that canberra offered him, you have to wonder why? In three years, i can't remmeber seeing any tactic other than one out stuff up the middle of the ruck. You need more than discipline and fitness these days to get an edge. You saw the way tim sheens completely outcoached his rivals in the final series.
matt elliot is the type of coach that can do well with a good side at his disposal, but he doesn't seem to be the type of coach that can build and mould a side in the time sheens, graeme murray, john lang fashion.
I would love to see david furner get a run......pay elliot out and piss him off straight away

I think Elliot has done a pretty decent job with the personnel he's been given, but the Raiders seem to be incapable of retaining their best talent. Monaghan x 2, McLinden, O'Hara etc - and they replace Monaghan with Frawley, wtf???
Can't say I have high hopes for this year at all, but I'll still be cheering them on.
im getting excited. have missed my footy. had enough of summer. cant wait for ski season, footy and footy pies. pissed i cant use my eels season tik till round 4. stupid playing home games in NZ.
signed up for the tipping comp, but i only join comps so ive got an idea of who is playing who on the weekend, not because im any good. i tip with the heart and that never wins competitions. i'd have better luck if i tipped based on colors, or all the home teams.

it's the responsibility of the coach to chase players he wants and to identify new talent.........he chose not to contest a lot of players on the market believing that he had adequate personnel......he was wrong. conversely, he let a lot of players go who were decent first graders.........withers was a good pick-up, but that's it. what was the purpose in buying smith and adamson?......there has been absolutely no re-building or planning at all.
anyway, looks like the footy is in for a bumper season..........i think the knights could have a great year, they have some terrific young players

Go the bunnies, poor trial against the Cowboys on the weekend but I think this year will be the best in a long time for us.
Yep, I can see an extremely even competition again this year, maybe more even that last year.
Can't see the usual teams dominating like they used to e.g Broncos, Easts or the Doggies (these three not going well last year was an anomaly.) And Souths are anything but guaranteed wooden spooners. Hoepfully they'll improve on last year, poor strugglers deserve it.
But of course the mighty Tigers are going back to back! Show Prince out in style.
CheelWinston
28-Feb-06, 04:41pm
i think princey came in late on watmough after he'd already scored a try and whatmough took offense.
apparently prince is one of the dirtier players in the league according to a mate who refs lower grades. all the refs keep a close eye on him.
still worth having on your team though!
the tiges might take a while to gel together, the style of game we were playing last year is not exactly one you can pick up again straight away after some time off, especially with a few new players in the side.
so it might be rough for a few weeks, im even considering tipping against them first round (blasphemy!)
No way I'm tipping against them, never have never will. Even in the distrastrous spell, what was it, 91 - 2003?
And you can tell Prince is a bit of a dog, just ultra competitive and hates being beaten. Seen him blow up at his own players often.

Well the Warriors have given them a 4 point start so they have nobody but themselves to blame if they finish with the spoon.... mind you 4 points isn't much and the Warriors will probably play like men possessed all season now that they're pissed off so it might not even be a factor.

i like the game the only thing that pisses me off is the way the game's administered - way way too many dickhead fans out at games that get into fights and shit and spoil it for others who payed just as much. i know its not hte nrl's fault but in my opinion in order to clean up the game they need to be a lot harsher
it also annoys me how much the thugs of the game get paid, only to go and start fights and shit and do shit like craig gower. only to go and cry wen he gets punished for his actions - i can understand (while not condoning) fights in matches coz of hte adrenalin and heat of the moment battle on field. but shit off field when these idiots are in the public spotlight (and reimbursed extremely well for it financially) - they just need to act like better role models. overall its only a handful of players bringing the game into disrepute i spose
as for the actual game, i love it. just wish the dickheads would stop spoiling it
and if the footy show makes a comeback i hope they go back to their old formula where they didnt just talk footy, the show went donwhill so fast as soon as their old producer left
12th man out..

Hey, last year was the first year undying faith paid off, xcept at SportsTAB where i kept only tipping them to win by less than 12 in the finals.
Logged in for tipping, gonna be an interesting year, all down to injuries again.
Princy isn't a dog, just a guy who has to fight to be respected - a purrfect tiger!! Just ask Origin and Test selectors.... boy has good form, great read and tenacity which is missing in this modern age. (unless he goes to the Titans and then dog is too good for him).
Well, I've wasted enough time on Leyton Orient to spend my time supporting their equivalent in Australia.
Yeah but Easts, come on! They buy so much for such little reward. And they have old jowly in their corner, and a coach that whingers spleen every time the ref makes one poor decision (yet his players are faultless) and even though he has had one of the top two player groups in the last five years.
I can actually seeing the fonts winning this year. They'll get done by the Rabbits though.
I think it'll be another even season.
Balmain-Wests - well I can't see them coming close to last year - too reliant on Benji and Prince.
Souths -Won't make the eight but will be close. They need some defence and some consistency early, get some wins up.
St.George/Illawarra - I think this may actually be their year. They won't have half the playing group next year - not unless they win. (I'm still pretty sure they must be rorting the cap with that player-group).
Easts - I think they can win it depending how Harrison and Anasta adapt.
Canterbury - Will be abouts.
Manly - Can't see them doing much. Shit coach, aging players, Orford will be a plus.
Penrith - Goooooooone!
Parramatta - Another team I think are definites to win. Smithy going might be the catalyst.
Newcastle - Semis but nothing more. Johns is a fucking genius but I still don't think it's enough to win.
Melbourne - Gooooone!
Canberra - Gooooone!
Nth Qld - Actually, definitely a very real threat this year if they have a large majority of their team on the park.
Cronulla - "I predict a riot! I predict a riot!" I think they'll make the semis for some reason. Probably because all of the white trash racists who live down there and think they are Sooo goood because they live in "the Shire", the only shire in the world, and they will beget their forefathers creed.
Warriors - Cheats. Should lose 18.5 points. Shouldn't even be in the NRL - it's false advertising.
Brisbane - Another real contender depending on second half of the year.
Big ups to the G for setting this up.

The NRL needs the Warriors, if they weren't there the Kiwi prescence in the NRL would largely die out within a few years as they'd all be playing union.
Lambretta, no I've never won the comp based solely on that faithful tipping of the Tigers, but I have won tipping comps, twice.
Based on today's papers looks like Prince is just about signed, sealed and delivered with the Titans. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.
Here's my prediction for the 8, to be revised in a few weeks.
1. Parramatta
2. Nth QLD
3. St George
4. West Tigers
5. Manly
6. Brisbane
7. Bulldogs
8. Roosters
9. Newcastle
10. Souths
11. Melbourne
12. Penrith
13. Cronulla
14. New Zealand
15. Canberra

When I first moved to Australia in 1995, I was living in Double Bay and working in Mascot.
The 95 season had finished so 1996 was my first taste of league. A lady I worked with used to sell "predict the first try scorer" cards for Souths Juniors who her son used to play for.
I watched the Friday night games purely to see if I had the right numbers on the tickets I bought each week. I didnt have a team, but little by little I really started enjoying the game and decided if I was going to invest my time watching the sport, I might as well have a team to follow.
As I lived in Double Bay, Easts were an option, as were Souths because of the Mascot/Souths Juniors ties. They were also a local side. The other team I considered were the Sharks. Liked the colours (my old school colours) and I used to go to Miranda a lot for work, so I was in the Shire a bit.
Sharks were too far to travel to, so I opted against them which left Souths and Easts. I asked some people what the teams were like and I got universal answers of "they're both shit and likely to prop the league up for years" so I felt comfortable with my West Ham / Leyton Orient history of picking a team destined for mid table mediocrity at best. Heart breaking finals losses and grand finals appearances seemed like a strange world to me. All Manchester United and all that shit. Wankers.
So I thought, well if they're both shit, I might as well go for the local team to where I live and chose Easts.
Then as the season unfolded, it turned out that Easts weren't as bad as I had been led to believe and that they had a great halves combination of Fittler and Lam.
I knew I should have chosen Souths, but it's too late. Once you choose a team you gotta stick with em, even if they are a bunch of wankers that everyone hates.
That Grand Final win in 2002 was one of the best feelings ever and do you know the best thing? Look at the playing roster. It was made up with a large portion of local lads and people no one else wanted and who were playing for their careers, so we're not the total Chelsea wankers that everyone makes us out to be.
Sure I'd like to see some additional junior players in the team, but as Souths STOLE all the junior areas condemning Easts to death in that regard, I have no qualms about us buying success and Souths wallowing in mis management and people that don't have the clubs best interests at heart.
If they did, the Juniors would have bought the seniors years ago and Souths would be the richest and strongest team in the land.
The only thing stopping them is fear of becoming an Easts WITH a juniors comp. Whats wrong with Souths? Do they revel in being the under dog so much that they refuse to take the role of wealthy club?
It's been within reach for years and it's been ignored. Now they've been offered a real chance by some business people who can make Souths a success and they want to turn it down.
Its madness I tells ya.

It's been within reach for years and it's been ignored. Now they've been offered a real chance by some business people who can make Souths a success and they want to turn it down.
Its madness I tells ya.

The Dragons deserve everything they get if the Thompson fiasco blows up in their faces.
The Dragons shat on a loyal player and servant for their own short term gain.
I hope they lose 2000 points and are only allowed to spend $2.50 on players for the next century the fucking wankers.
But then I do hate them so so much

im suprised the roosters have never got done for salary cap breaches.
i see raiders my throw up brian smith as a candidate for next year at their next board meeting. they may not want him, and brian may not want to move to the hole that is canberra, but i've never seen a term like "merry-go-round" so apltly used before then when describing the coaching turnovers that will occur at the end of this season (or possibly in the middle).
i just hope it doesnt take away from what should be a great season, but i fear coaches are going to be on the back cover of my sunday paper just as much as players.

you mean dream team?
They lack fitness and discipline, two things the Raiders have largely managed to achieve, if failing in all other areas.
i think with henjak it probably had something to do with st eddies + no league talent + arrogance.
i agree with fitness and discipline - we lose half our roster each year to injuries part of the reason we fade.
Elliot is bringing the young guns through now days but the players themselves must put in the effort.
with people not wanting to live in canberra i see it differently. i think alot of sydney based league players avg age (18-21) who are looking to crack first grade in NSWRL would still find it hard to crack first grade in the Raiders even if given the chance too. it is not about where they want to live.
not having a go, but i hope the reason you moved to the brumbies was not because the guys are better looking or anything? ahahaha jokes! and actually hope you like the game of union. good to see you like your league and union though!
p.s i will bet anyone that the raiders will not get wooden spoon this year

haha any tips on puttin the right players in the right positions ?
No.
Anyway, it doesn't ask that. It asks "you can only play the players in the position you bought them for, for your team".
In other words, you can buy a player as a 2nd rower if the comp allows, even if he plays prop for his club that weekend. It's just that you're only allowed to name him as a 2nd rower and not as a prop. That's my take anyway. I've been known to be wrong before.
Oh and I have deleted my post about joining the fantasy league as there is a maximum of 12 players allowed in the league and the guy who is running it wants to invite another 6 people to join, and there's already 7 participants. Looks like some fucker is going to miss out.

Brian Carney who is Irish was a decent winger in Super League, and scored some bloody good tries for Great Britain in the tri series against Australia and New Zealand two years ago.
However last year in the tri series he looked to have lost a yard or two in pace. It should also be noted that he is 29 already.
Still, it will be interesting to see how he goes for Newcastle this year.
PS. My dig at the Titans was a personal joke between me and Sam, as we tend to disagree on the prog that we both like. I was just having a little dig.

Geez St George can look pedestrian at times. Their second phase play is non-existant and they really do rely on Ggasnier heavily. I would almost be tempted to shift gasnier to 5/8th if i was Brown. I thought Wests should have won by more than what they did. The tigers are just so well coached. they will be a very hard team to beat again this year.

dragons looked fking awful. barrett looked like a lost child. a really ugly lost child whose parents probably abandoned him and moved overseas.
gasnier was their only option in attack. the rest of their backs looked positively uninspired.
ryles and bailey are both big fucking cats.
they will need to improve out of sight to have a chance of living up to expectations this year.
tigers looked much improved but obviously still a bit rusty. not sure if/how long marshall and fulton are out for but they would both be missed. marshall not so in defence, he was exposed again several times. but gasnier is that much bigger than him so its to be expected. hopefully harris or galloway can fill fultons shoes, or halatau if he comes back soon.

As for Gus Gould. Should have been given a bullet years agoIs that the bloke who kept stating and re-affirming that the Tigers were getting tired, or were tiring, or were getting back lethargically (read: tired), or slowly (read: tired), or pedestrian (read: tired), or reacting insufficiently (read: tired), or looking exhausted (read: tired), only to run out of thesaurus like allusions, and retreat back, circuitously, to insisting that they were looking pretty tired, feeling pretty tired, were actually tiring and looking like they were about to go to bed - for obvious reasons relating to being tired. Fuck that bloke can harp on with arrogant nonchalance. One is tempted to say his comments are becoming tiresome, then again ol' Bulljowls has probably taken out copyright on that word to use in next weeks commentary.

Well what a week it was in round one of the NRL.
Friday saw the Dragons lead for most of the night against an out of sorts Tigers team, only to bottle it at the back end and let the Tigers steamroll over the top of them. It was almost as if the Dragons switched off mentally thinking the cat was in the bag and sinking in the river, only for the cat to turn round and bite them.
Super Saturday managed to keep it's record of the past three years, where the least favoured sides got up.
Firstly the much fancied Eels went up to Newcastle and got their arses well and truly kicked. They were sloppy in attack and really looked like they under estimated just how good Newcastle were. This game was a real fucking wake up call for them. Next week will be interesting.
Then the Bulldogs got turned over at home by the NRL Jeckyll and Hyde side, Penrith. Penrith may have dropped Gower as Captain, but the body language on the field didnt look like that. Expect a stormer of a year from Gower as he looks to prove himself.
Finally Manly managed to lose at home to one of the least favoured teams in the NRL. It's true that the Raiders are better known as the Faders, so early season success shouldnt come as a surprise, but Manly were bloody hopeless at best and will need a massive improvement if they are serious about challenging for the top 8 again this season.
Sunday saw the Storm travel to New Zealand to take on a Warriors outfit smarting at starting the day with minus 4 points. By the end of the game, the only difference was that the Warriors now also had a minus points scored differential as well.
Next up was the Sydney Derby between local rivals Souths and Easts which was being played nowhere near either clubs traditional supporter base. Just over 16,000 turned up to see a game of two different halves. The first half saw the Roosters completely outwitted by a sharp and energetic South Sydney team. At half time with the score at 18 v 6 to Souths and the Roosters hapless in attack, most people would have been tipping another upset. Yet come the 2nd half it was a totally different game. Souths werent helped by the fact that the brilliant Walker went off with concussion, but in truth Souths faded badly against a Roosters outfit that grew in confidence. Souths can take some solace from the game though. If they keep their best team on the field, they have enough talent to worry most teams for at least 60 minutes. It's to be seen if they can stretch that to 80. I hope so.
Finally the Broncos got fucking pummelled by the Cowboys in Brisbane. The Broncos look like a worrying mish mash of past their prime stars, rejects from other clubs and inexperienced kids. Sure the Cowboys are on of the standout teams in the comp, but this was an embarrasment for the Broncos.
Bring on next weekend

I hope that is the last time Robinson ever referee's a game in the NRL and the touch judges aren't far behind him, that was utter bullshit. Roosters were looking good in the second half and that hit completely turned the game around. I still do not know how the two touch judges AND ref completely missed the tackle, allowed play on, Roosters score in that set of six and then Morley gets spoken to and put on report, meanwhile our number 1 play maker is off the field for the rest of the game.

Yeah that was pretty poor. I find myself getting excited about league again despite years of shit turning me off the game and in round 1 we have such a poor display. It's no wonder that peope are just getting over league and the other sports are thriving.
I remember last year there were some shocking refereeing decisions and it was something they were apparently going to work on but nothing has changed. The only thing that will improve the standard is to drop refs who have such poor performances. Hell, even I could have done a better job as a touch judge yesterday!
Warren G
13-Mar-06, 09:12am
I think yesterday was the first time in the history of Rugby League that South Sydney have ever had a bad decision at the hands of referee.
Read the papers this morning and apparently the NRL boss Robert Finch said had Fox Sports shown a replay of that cocksmoker Morleys tackle on Walker straight after the event, he probably would of called it up. Then to had Ricky come out and say that it would be wrong to charge him was rather stupid too.
Souths have to learn to get on with the game. It was evident after that tackle that their motivation dropped and as the Roosters were starting to gain momentem, it resulted in us being steamrolled in the second half. I guess we will never know what would of happened it that got pulled up and Morley was sent off.
The reason why someone got 9 for the round was for non-tipping. I set it as away teams with a reduction of one point. Can't remember what it was the go with non-tipping was last year. Maybe change it to lowest score for the round less one?
2/7 for the round - bloody hopeless

I agree to a certain extent here Wazza but that referring performance in general was utter garbage.
I mean to say the Flannary try when he apparently didn't make a play for the ball before knocking on, regathering and running down the field - WTF was that? As if he didn't make a play for the ball?
I'm confident that with consistent and proper decision making from the man with the wistle, Souths can upset a few teams this year. I was overall impressed with their performance and don't think the scoreline yesterday really reflected the game.
Bring on St George in two weeks...
Go you mighty Tigers! Poor Benji, poor fans. Great game to watch, had awesome seats as well. Pity there was only 27k there instead of the mooted 40k. Still able to haev a "Barretts a wanker' chant", that made my night.

he has been charged grade 3, two weeks if he pleads guilty, three if he contests it, will be interesting after Stuarts comments if they dont contest it.
What will be more interesting is to see how much Ricky whinges if they lose.
That said, I thought it was accidental. Walker was falling slightly and it threw Morleys timing off.
I reckon Morley would be a good chance at getting off if his name wasn't Adrian Morley.
I loved the comments from Walker when Morley phoned him to apologise "It's alright mate, these things happen, after all we were playing footy, not tiddlywinks"
I think everyone is sick of Ricky Stuarts bitchin
Fully. The guy thinks there should be different rules for him and his Roosters. If only he had the tact and humility of Sheensy.

I'd be inclined to agree, though even if accidental, he deserves a week off. And someone at the Roosters needs to develop a new tackling technique, or help with his reaction speed when someone changes angle, I mean he has one clanger every year, you'd think the Roosters would be sick of losing him to suspension all the time.

I reckon for intentional high shots that cause a player to be sidelined the penalty should be either the grading the judicary give it or the length that the opposition player is sidelined - whichever is higher.
Also changing the competion to have non-tipsters to get the lowest score minus 1. It's unfair to get a better score than someone who has tipped. Anyone disagree?

Then the Bulldogs got turned over at home by the NRL Jeckyll and Hyde side, Penrith. Penrith may have dropped Gower as Captain, but the body language on the field didnt look like that. Expect a stormer of a year from Gower as he looks to prove himself.
Keeping in mind the Dogs were nearly at Full strength and the panthers were missing 4 Key Players, This was a good result for them. You are completely right LamB, Gower is hungry and that is being shown with the rest of the boys also, I think they want it alot more than they did last year. I think they will have a much bigger impact on the comp this year..

Penrith Stadium is now sponsered by Credit Union Australia, so if the Panthers have a good year this will result in a lot more exposure for my company.

Poor little Benji. Can he take a fucking trick.
Tigers have reshuffled their team due to injuries.
A bit worried about mistake ridden Fitzhenry at 5/8, but I'll give him a chance. And Todd Payten off the bench into second row, with Harris on the bench, massive pack! What a contrast to last year.
One eyed tiger and proud.

dragons are messed this week as well young at 5/8 so my guess is gorrell will go to hooker and timmins is back as well which is a plus and hornby is captain at half back until head gets back
Wouldn't be surpirsed if Panthers do the Saints. Panthers looked pretty good last week, Gower very strong. Plus no Barret and a hooker/2nd rower his replacement.

well the dogs rolled the tiges tonight. it still hurts even though i tipped it and was sorta expecting it.
dogs were at their dirty best. i loved adam perry holding gibbs back while o'meley laid into him. that was class. and corey hughes is such a dirty little prick! also mason, its taken him two weeks to show that article about him wising up, being more mature, and concentrating on football was a complete crock of shit. take your ritalin buddy!
to be fair to them though they played a physical game that the tiges just couldnt match. the dogs will go a lot better this year than some people have been predicting.
the tiges were not helped by the terminally shithouse fitzhenry at 5/8. the only thing he did right was not fuck up the try that was handed to him (unlike last week). the boys still need time to gel and practise the touch footy style of play that worked so well last year, but soon enough miracles will occur once more.
and gibbs got ablolutely flattened. heh.
i hope Canberra win their first 9 games, then lose the rest, then change their name, then get sponsorship from Rane or Ecler, then buy some good players, then win in 2007.

I knew the dogs had more in them.
I missed the actual game, so I am curious to see how it all came about... but its a clear indication that this season could very well be as hard to tip as last.
yay for us :meh:
Last week Tiger dance, this week hide and weep. Hate to say it but the Doggies were physical, brutal and played like they had a point to prove (very much like 2002 & 2003).
My Tiges were soooo flat in offence, barely making more than 4m/tackle. And it is not all Benji, cos he had a piss-poor game last week. Seriously, we just lacked spark, and that was taken up by Patten (possibly the most underated player in the league) and El Masri. Man has he grown in 10 years - from a quick finisher who crumbled under any tackle to a real quality player (and awesome kicker). 3/4 trys he actually had to use muscle, my hat is off to you Magic - showing what dedication and not letting money fk you up can do.
Still not happy..... can we also take out a hit on Gus Gould .... how can he say O'Meley could "creep under your door and steal your ...(missed it cos i was swearing at the screen)

Well, at the halfway point of the round, and I have 3 out of 5 tipped correctly.
Friday night and the Bulldogs absolutely mangled the Tigers leaving them wondering what the hell hit them. The Tigers really look all lost at sea without Marshall scaring the shit out of the opposition defence.
El Mazri had a field day and the Dogs forwards dominated. Yes, there were a few moments where they were the dirty dogs, but the Tigers got outmuscled and out enthused.
Then next up, the Eels managed to sneak it home against the luckless Warriors. I didnt see the game, but the NRL callers were discussing missed opportunities by the Warriors, more than the skill of the Eels.
Next up a flat one dimesional Sharks took on a dull and uninspiring Broncos to see who could be the least inept and fall across the line. In the end, the Sharks self detonated and allowed the Broncos to score more against them than the Broncos allowed the Sharks to score.
Finally on Saturday, the Cowboys tried to show that the Broncos arent the only team in Queensland that can lose their way and only just managed to hold off a determined Manly outfit. If this game had been a 90 minute affair, Manly probably would have won by 10 to 12 points. After dominating the first half, this should have been a 40 plus scoreline for the Cowboys, but they lost all their attacking sparkle for some reason and almost threw it all away.
Next up the Roosters threw down the challenge for the most inept display of the season award by trying to set an NRL record for the most dropped balls in a game. At the half time mark, the Roostes had completed only 7 sets from 18 and by the 6th minute of the 2nd half this had extended to 7 from 22. Not only were they dropping ball, but they kept putting pressure on themselves by letting the referee call backwards passes by the Roosters forward, forward passes by the Storm backwards and by generally getting 0 out of the 50/50 calls. Having said that I thought Billy Slater had a perfectly good try disallowed, but this was more than made up for by knock ons by the Storm resulting in the Storm getting the ball back and the Offside rule only applying to the Roosters. Tony Archer, every time you referee us you dominate the game for all the wrong reasons. And you are an ugly fucking poodle. Fuck off. That said, Archer barely needed to help the Storm the Roosters were just that bad.
Then, all of a sudden Soward came to life, scored a good try and set another up and the Storm were out on their feet. Only the 20th mistake of the game by Minichello late on stopped the Roosters from tying a game they certainly didnt deserve to win. If the Roosters can keep this form up, I'll have $50 on them to win the spoon. Fucking hopeless.

looks like the broncos are in for a long seasoni disagree.
as wayne bennett has said, give the broncos another 3-4 weeks to hit their straps. i think the signs are there.
attackwise, the broncos were very conservative in the first half merely content to complete their sets without doing anything fancy with the ball. our showed improved in the second forty with seymour taking a more authoritative role culminating in a superbly taken try. seymour and lockyer were an effective pairing last year - until the latter got injured. if he can stay healthy....
we'll have more options with tate and hodges back in the centres.
need to improve on our defence though.

They always do it with Dragons players as well. They can be completely out of form and just back from serious injury and they're rushed into the Blues squad ahead of in form players who are on their game.

The Warriors played very well. Prince at 5/8 just couldn't control the centre of the park.
The Warriors just had them pinned in their own half for the majority of the first half.

Well round three of the competition is now over and the results seem to be going pretty much to form if the ITM tipping competition is anything to go by.
On Friday Knight the Newcastle Johns errr, I mean Knights absolutely steamrollered the Dogs and sent them back to Belmore with their tails not only between their legs but in need of some band aids to put on the bleeding sores. Johns made the Dogs forwards look like stupid slow thugs as he moved the ball beyond them to fast running men. All the press in the week was about a physical battle and the Dogs fell for it. Newcastle ran them in circles and the forwards were nowhere to be seen. Talking of seeing, how does Grimaldi do it with eyes that point off in different directions. I cracked up when they showed his picture at the start of the game. Your typically thick looking boss eyed rugby league forward. Pity he had a perfectly good try disallowed. No it wasn't
Buderus wants shooting for getting sin binned when his team was so far ahead. That was pointless.
Next up was Super Saturday and I was front and centre down the pub with Skew and othes to spend 5 hours drinking piss and watching Rugby League. Happy fucking days.
First up the Tigers proved they are every bit like Newcastle in the way that you take one man out of the side and they cant play. They were so one dimensional they actually made the Warriors look good. Don't get me wrong, the Warriors aren't bad, but they're not good. Come back Benji and soon, that other lot need you.... badly. Oh and call of the weekend goes to the one eyed Kiwi commentator who said Clinton Toopi was living up to his tag of "greatest centre in the game" because he scored a try. Oh how I laughed.
Then to Brookvale where a lack lustre Manly took on a less lustrous Cronulla. Both sides spent much of the game willing the other side to win and the only thing that made the game genuinely exciting was that it was close. In the end Stephen Bell (end) got his end away and stuck it over the line to give Manly a win. Cronulla looked bereft of ideas and lacking the punch of Peachey from the bank line. Lance Thompson tries, but he's more trying than try scoring.
more later......

26-Mar-06, 10:56pm
The last game on Saturday was the North Queensland Cowboys and the Melbourne Storm played up in Townsville. Another commentator piece of magic at the start of this game stated that this week had been a terrible one for the people of Townsville with cyclone devastation. Yes, by all reports it rained in Townsville. The poor souls.
The game itself was quite exciting, even if it was viewed through the semi fog of alcohol and North Queensland completely took control of the game. Many people had tipped the Storm after their display against the Roosters last week, but they had no answers to North Queenslands speed game. North Queensland kept the ball moving and their fast men found the Storm defence wanting. Jonathan Thurston had the Storm players guessing all night. If the Storm were being tipped as Premiership contenders, then the Cowboys must be shoe ins for the flag this year on this form.
Sundays games saw the Rabbitohs go up against the Dragons out at Homebush. Now, dont get me wrong, I know why Souths went to Homebush but boy is it a graveyard for them. When St George were awarded a try right before half time which made the score 8 v 22 instead of 8 v 16 with a penalty to Souths and time to get right back into contention the crowd didnt get involved and let Hampstead know just what a complete and utter fucking tool he is and that he needs to go and get a fucking rule book and work out what game he's supposed to be watching. If a Red and White turd runs into a Green and Red player and prevents him from tackling the other shitbag with the ball, its a penalty and the play should be brought back. From there Souths were never in it again and Saints ran away with it.
Next up the Roosters played one of the leagues most average teams in the Canberra Raiders. The Raiders would have been smarting after their complete annihiliation at the hands of the Newcastle Johns last week and their play in the first half against the Roosters showed this. Their completions were up, their handling errors were down, they gave away less penalties and were actually very good. The Roosters for their part were a 1000% improvement on the week before, which made them merely adequate.
The Roosters made their position all the more fragile by trying to get Canberra across the line with a high penalty count. By half time Canberra had been awarded 9 penalties to the Roosters 3.
I dont know what Ricky said at half time, probably "stop giving away dumb penalties you brainless fucking prats" but whatever he said it worked. Once the Roosters actually got their hands on the ball they completed a high proportion of their sets and Canberra crumbled. By the end of the game the Roosters had scored more than 50 and the Raiders got zip.
The Final game of the week was the Broncos and the Eels. The Broncos have been so bad in the first two weeks of the year that I thought the Eels would have enough to win it. Good batting thinkman..... not. The Eels have been awful this season so far and this was business as usual for one of the Pre Season Premiership favourites. A 30 v 6 loss leaves them propping up the table with the Warriors. The Warriors may have less points but at least they've won a game and with bad enough opposition will actually win more. Parramatta on the other hand................
Bring on week 4 of the greatest way to spend your weekend of all.........
First up the Tigers proved they are every bit like Newcastle in the way that you take one man out of the side and they cant play. They were so one dimensional they actually made the Warriors look good.
I agree that the Tigers played horribly, but your comment is way off. Take out 'one man'? Try taking out seven top-line players (Marshall, Elford, Halatau, Heinghington, Gibbs, Farah, Fulton) out of any NRL side, and I guarantee you it'll get a little ugly.
True, I'd rate Marshall as the most important out of those players, but none of them are that far behind him... Elford was the best defensive centre in the NRL last year, Halatau is an international-quality player and a key across the park, Heinghington is a hard-running workhorse, Gibbs is a mongrel, Farah is almost as important as Benji in attack and more important in defence, and Fulton (who's gaawn for the season) gets through a ridiculous amount of defence, especially try-saving scrambling stuff.
Add to that the facts that Skandalis should've been rested because of injuries and that we were blooding two new players (both our hookers, de Gois and Flanagan), and you'll see it's got way more to do than just a missing Benji.
These are of course excuses. I realise that -- in fact, that's the point -- but I'm just pointing out the flaws in the 'Benji is everything' argument. We played like trash (any team would've beaten us on the day), but I think it's understandable in the circumstances of such an even competition.

Well said Lamb. You should apply for some kind of journalistic/opinion piece at Big League, or one of those Courier mags, due to relative objectivity and a dash of humour in your summations.
And fuck you Rabbits. Coulda, shoulda, woulda anti'd up after the swell of positive, fan and media reaction after the "Yes" vote, but youse looked like retarded marsupials with eye-clefts at times. Sutton should either move to centre or lock, I just don't think he has that idiosyncratic acceleration that the elite 5/8's have, he is going to be a great, and may even end up at pivot, but I think he and the team are looking to him to something magic and it is too much at this stage.
Polglase-1, MacDougall-2, Gordon-3, Sutton-4, Hegarty-5, Champion-6 and Walker-7.
Anyway a couple of great games this weekend - Parra v Broncos and Roosters v Raiders (probably not great). In about 5 rounds it is going to be so hard to tip. I'll still be top though, yo.

What the fuck is going on with The Raiders? I'm not expecting them to win too many this year, but at least have a fukn dig boys. How do you let 48 points through in 30 minutes of football? Un-acceptable. :| Send Dean Lance down there for some tackling practice.
Went to Broncs vs Eels game, Parra made enough breaks to win half a dozen games of football but just couldn't get over the line. Broncos had fewer chances but capitalised on all of them. Scrappy game overall, but the best I've seen Lockyer play in some time.

Point taken. Still, most of those players were there in other weeks and you were still shite.
Marshall is the most important player you're missing and the team really needs him back on board. Oh and Fulton would be the 2nd most important in my opinion with all the tackling he does and he also causes problems in attack.
Such a shame that such a great side havent the depth to show what they can do. Lets hope they get people back and start winning games again.
Oh and Geezah, thanks for the compliment. It's really appreciated.
As long as no one minds, I'll keep doing round updates as the season goes on. After all, why do I bother watching 5 games of footy every weekend if I'm not going to do something with the knowledge?
^ Marshall is definitely our #1 asset, yep. Just to clarify though, four of the six other players (Elford, Fulton, Halatau, Heinghington) haven't played at all this year... well, Fulton played for two minutes. And out of the two games that Farah and Gibbs played in, we did well in one. (As I said before, any team will struggle with more than three or four of its top players out.)
The other thing I'll say in the Tigers' defence (they need some) is that there are a lot of new (to Wests or to first-grade) players who haven't had the chance to settle in: Galloway, Lolesi, O'Hara, Harris, de Gois, Flanagan, Crockett, Reynolds... it's a big ask to stick eight fresh faces in a team and expect them to gel, even against the Warriors.
I reckon those are temporary disadvantages for the Tigers which should fade as the season goes on. More broadly, maybe we're still adjusting to footy without Pat Richards and Mark O'Neill... they were both big contributors. I'll be more worried if we're still playing like sh*t when we've got a more settled side though.
I'll be back to help respond to this blatant Tiger bashing later.
Good work Uprock.
PS. Warriors made very little mistakes on Saturday and both prop forwards were devastating (Price and Wiki), though they were helped by an ineffectual Tigers pack.
One bright spot was Flanagan, he looked very dangerous around the ruck.

I'll be back to help respond to this blatant Tiger bashing later.
It's not Tiger bashing at all.
They've played three games and the games without Marshall they've been hopeless.
I am a Roosters fan and when they played badly I wrote them off completely calling them every pack of arseholes under the sun.
If the Tigers win or play galantly in defeat I will praise them, but at the moment I'd fear for them against Souths or Cronulla.... Ouch.
Once you get your players back it will be a different story, but even with all your other players back excluding Monsoir Marshall you'd still struggle against the best sides. Well, unless you played the Roosters side that played in the first half of the round 2 game. You'd beat them by 300. Fucking shite they were. Hell, even the London Broncos or Widnes would have fucking stuffed that sorry shower of shite.

tigers hahahahahajeez how fucking petty do you want to be?
obviously the memories of round one or the preliminary final last year are too fresh in your mind. i suggest therapy.
obviously marshall will be missed as he is one of the more unpredictable attacking players in the game. but robbie farah was also a very important part of our team. not only is he lethal around the ruck but he gets through a lot of tackles in defence too. as does liam fulton. and dene halatau is a bad loss as well. anyone remember how bad he carved up the dragons at the end of last year?!
when it comes down to it the season is still only three weeks old, a few losses at the moment is not the end of the world, i dont think so and im sure sheensy doesnt think so either. the tigers were pretty woeful against new zealand but this is to be expected with a bunch of players making 1st grade debuts and another bunch still settling in to the team. and the warriors aren't the worst team in the comp, they will cause a few upsets this year.
the tigers won't lose every game they play without benji.

Do what i did and put your money on the tiges to win the comp peoples. Do it while their odds are juicy. They'll come good toward the end of the year...Nostradamus predicted it.

so i hear on the news marshall might be back this weekend. so my statement 'the tigers won't lose every game they play without benji' was obviously wrong for the moment.

Yeah cool.
As Cheel said its early days, but all this talk of being a one man team is such bullshit. There's so many other factors that contributed to the past 2 poor performances.
- Bulldogs were on song for once, that was probably the best game they've played since winning the 04 Grand Final. Even their halves played well with Sherwin having a mistake free game and that Holdsworth dude showing glimpes of quality. Just to show how the bounce went agaisnt us that night, an intercept try was scored from a scrum! When the fuck has that ever happened???!!! Probably Prince's worst play in Tigers colours.
- All the issues with the Warriors game have been brought up already, injuries, players out of position, new faces, poor control etc etc.
Anyway, enough tears from me. I'll be at Leichardt baying for Melbourne blood on Sunday arvo.
I am concerned though, have the Tigers ever beat Melbourne? I can't remember, once at best. The last 2 games at Leichardt against them we've been smashed, but that was mostly Orfords doing. No skilful midget this time.
Matt King is back for them but hopefully Sheens plays Elford (who is returning from injury on the wing) on his side to take advantage of his defence.
But I'm still cut that we're coming 12th with a shit F/A considering we won the comp last year.
Re: Easts, at least they beat Canberra, but what do you expect considering the team they have on paper. Those tries Topou (sp?) scored looked quality.

Haha the raiders plan is working! Instead of winning our first 6 or 8 matches then fading horribly, we're going to get our demoralising losses out of the way early then storm home to the finals! hahaha!

you would have thought the tiger defence would have got a little better when benji was out coz he cant defend for shit. remember wat gasnier did to him. he made him his little bitch
Remember what happened to Gasnier in the qualifying final last year? Dragged over the sideline llike little a girl by Richards. That was funny. What happened in round 1? Talk about one man teams

it wasnt barrett who put marshall out, cant remember who it was but it was one of the dragons younger blokes.
as for the tigers being a lucky team that's bullshit. you dont win a premiership by being lucky. we've just got a good coach and a bunch of young players willing to put their balls on the line, rather than a pack of overpaid nancy boys who throw in the towel at the first sign of trouble.
im not sure if the tigers have ever beaten the storm at leichhardt, not in recent years anyway.

it was reece simmonds who hurt the little bitch.

dont think its going to change this weekend
You've got ya bites from the 'tigers are a one man team' comment so give it a rest.
Yes it was Simmonds who hit Benji, was a fucking great front on ball and all tackle that had to be made otherwise it was a certain try.
Dragons best players are leaving for money and a decent chance to win soemthing anyway. Guess they've had enough of under achieving time and time again.

i would chase money while i could too. but its well known dragons players have taken pay cuts to try and keep the team together cooper and young recently done it when they re-signed.
Hehe, Dragons.
I am concerned though, have the Tigers ever beat Melbourne? I can't remember, once at best
Actually I think the Tigers've beaten them around four times. Having said that, we've played them about twelve times. I have nasty memories from games against the Storm, including the absolute drubbing they gave us last year at Leichhardt and that game where Danny Williams punched Buckets in the back of the head.
On a side note, top marks to Benji for giving us the match-winner against the also-rans in round one with a broken jaw, while Trent Barrett took a week off later because he had the sniffles.
Trent Barret shits all over benji! benji might of won the game for you in that round but he almost lost it for you letting gasnier run all over him, missing tackles lettin in try after try! he may have his little gay step thats gonna get him smashed one day, but the kid cant defend for shit!
tip of the week - dragons by 6 over broncos and strom by 18 over the tigers

Dragons will be better off without Barrett and his pink handbag next year.
Why do dragons supporters get so cut when someone mentions the tigers?
Cos the one chance the Tigers got at getting hold of the premiership trophy in 15 years, they took it with both hands on the 1st attempt. Saints have got within a whisker of the trophy numerous times in the last 15 years (is it 5?) and choked every time.
So Dragons supporters a liitle touchy when it comes to the Tigers.

What makes you think they were lucky? They ouplayed every team in the finals series, and deservedly won the comp.

St George-Illawara Dragons...
St George: 15 premierships
Illawarra: 0 premierships
Merged: 0 premierships
= 15 (most recent, 1979)
Wests Tigers...
Balmain Tigers: 11 premierships
Wests Magpies: 4 premierships
Merged: 1 premiership
= 16 (most recent, 2005)

Not only that, but who gives a shit if we were lucky? We've had our share of bad luck and good luck, just like every other team. If you wanna talk about luck go read a horoscope or something, don't bring it into winning premierships.
What it comes down to is that we had one of the most memorable years in sporting history, and we won. Our victory is etched in 2005... there's nothing about luck written on the trophy.
The fact that we came out of nowhere to win it, and that we haven't been 'consistent' made the wins that much better. I'll always remember guys like Mark O'Neill, Skando and Hodgo being champions in a team that no one gave a chance. The team that had to spend $200k under the salary cap. But who's gonna get excited when/if the Dragons in a premiership? Does anyone give a toss about Barrett, Ryles, Cooper and co? It'll be more a case of, 'Well, they've almost justified all that money spent on them and all the times they've played rep footy...' You guys can have the encouragement award for consistency, we'll take our premiership.

But quit living in the past, who cares about last year on any other previous year. Tigers won a premiership and their fans are still going on about it. Dragons choked again and their still making excuses.

i believe all our top players have come through the ranks also and not bought!
Anyway, some tough games for the tipping comps this week.
Eels over Cowboys in an upset
Same with Rabbits over Sharks
Panthers over Canberra in a close one
Roosters to do Manly
Tigers over Melbourne in another close one
Knight over Warriors.
No idea about Dragons v Broncos. Is Barrett in? Cooper? Who is replacing Bailey and Ryles in the front row? When is Matthew Head due back?
Tippers nightmare.

the dragons have the phil gould seal of approval this year which means they will fail for sure.
barrett and marshall are both decent 5/8s. yes marshall is suspect in defence but it doesnt make as much difference if he defends outside elford who is excellent in defence. but i havent really liked barrett since last year when he hit pj marsh in the back of the head and then ducked for cover like a little bitch when people started swinging.
what a fucking cat.

The only thing the Dragons do consistantly is every year they say "this is gonna be our year" and every year they go home fucking crying.
That's what shits me most about the Dragons. Yes they have some great players and enviable support, but even when they aren't a snowballs hell in chance of winning a title their arrogant fucking fans are pumping up their little pigeon chests and crapping on about how they're the greatest blah blah blah.
They give me the absolute shits and I hope they dont even make the fucking finals.

Oh and call of the weekend goes to the one eyed Kiwi commentator who said Clinton Toopi was living up to his tag of "greatest centre in the game" because he scored a try. Oh how I laughed.
Pull your head in Lamb, what the commentator actually said was that a few seasons ago Toopi had had the tag of "world's best centre", which was true, around 2002 plenty of people were giving him that accolade. There was nothing one-eyed about the comment.

PS. Warriors made very little mistakes on Saturday and both prop forwards were devastating (Price and Wiki), though they were helped by an ineffectual Tigers pack.
Actually the Warriors made plenty of mistakes but they were all down the Tiger's end of the park so they tended to retard the Warriors scoreline rather than help the Tigers'. If the Warriors had had a bit less dropsy in the Tigers red zone they'dve racked up 40+.
The only thing the Dragons do consistantly is every year they say "this is gonna be our year" and every year they go home fucking crying.

we all know who the best centre is :)
Jamie Lyon apparently. Even though when he goes back to Parra it looks like he'll be playing 5/8.
