Is there an AFL tipping competition?

There usually is, but has anyone set one up for this season??

My predicition is that West Coast and Adelaide will be there or there abouts at the end of the season.

Collingwood have to improve, and the Saints will find it harder and harder to live up to the "team that should win the comp" tag.

Oh and Richmond will be as shit as usual after winning some early games expect them to explode and send their fans burning their season tickets.

Im going to be running a tipping comp between my mates once the drive.com.au one starts up again. It will be $20 in, winner takes all PM me if your interested in joining it otherwise I can do one for ITM?

Was hoping all the bullshit over the last two weeks and their loss to the Shockers would have pushed up their price a bit at the TAB but no such luck.

Go the eagles!

St Kilda, Adelaide, Geelong, and Sydney should all do well.
 @ Collingwood even near the top 4. And hopefully the dockers suck... which reminds me:
How many Freo players does it take to change a lightbulb?
No one knows, they can't make it up the ladder ...

Collingwood would need god to smite all 15 other teams to make the finals and would still find away not to win the flag.

As a Port supporter i think we will just scrape into the 8 thus doing as more long term harm than good through the draft.

I can't see Collingwood making the 8 at all. They will need to improve a lot.

As for Port, they are definitely looking shakey ever since they won the flag. How can a team with all those good players crash from a consistent top two performer to where they are now. How did they go in draft because I think their young players coming through are not that good.
Predict Port to finish about 10th or 11th.

Go Crows!! Go the extra distance this year!

We were up in the top 4 for four years straight for one premiership, the natural cycle of AFL limits you to 4 years at the top before needing to rebuild. WE should have one 2 maybe three flags for a pass mark but now we are finally blooding some new players but yeah we will struggle for a little while.

My 8

St Kilda

gardiner has been sent back to the 2's to improve his attitude & find some form. and disciplinary reasons.

which is (or was) news.

. . if it now comes out that the disciplinary reasons include testing positive for drugs then that is also newsworthy.

newsworthy = relevent.

you = fool

however my money is on sampi being busted for hooch.

17-Mar-06, 12:01pm
This isn't new news, it was written on AFL.com, on the West Coast Eagles homepage and all over the news over a month ago!

Fuck, I live in Sydney and I even heard about it on the local news here. They cited disciplinary reasons for his dropping, he had over stepped the mark just one too many times. They never said it was for testing positive to drugs but now this information has been leaked, it doesn't take a genius to put two and two together and realise this is why he was dropped a long time ago. Hence why I don't see it as relevant, but thanks for calling me a fool and stupid etc. when it seems it is you guys who have shot your mouth off without knowing all the facts.

Sabbathen
17-Mar-06, 01:00pm
Well firstly, I just pay close attention to what happens at my supported footy club. Gardiner has a drug problem, thats no secret. He was dropped from the club(he is still contracted and receives injury treatment and support though) and then a little while later some documents are leaked stating a premiership player has tested positive to a drug test. No I don't know for sure it's him, i'm making an educated guess. I could be totally wrong, it could be Barry Hall the day after he went on a 5 pinger bender at Home nightclub but chances are it isn't.

As for my comments about Eddie McGuire, some of my work colleagues and friends who are Collingwood supporters agreed that perhaps the extra media scrutiny that Eddie adds to Collingwood may not be such a good thing. That was all I said, go back and read my post, I never said I had proof of anyone directly involved with the club having these issues. It was my opinion and how I would probably feel if I was a Pies supporter.

Xpose
17-Mar-06, 02:08pm
Ok so apparently they hav been named today in WA media as - Gardiner, Pollock from Freo & Thurstans from Port.

Now i know of a stack more Adelaide Crows boys who love to get on certain substances in the off season, it'll be interesting to see if they do release all 17 who was dumb enough to get caught.

17-Mar-06, 02:28pm
i would say it's relevant/newsworthy for the following reasons:

a) club could have come clean about why he was sent back to the two's & they didn't. they said "attitude problem".

does this make them as bad as ben?

who still hasn't really fessed up as to why he had enough coke to outrun the cops, but not enough to share with all of them at the booze bus.

b) it's near the start of the season, so there's no real news yet & this is "huge"

c) drugs/treament of women has been a growing problem in australian football (across all codes) for the last couple of years

a) club could have come clean about why he was sent back to the two's & they didn't. they said "attitude problem".
From westcoasteagles.com.au a month ago on why Gardiner was dropped:
"Coach John Worsfold did not elaborate on the specific incident that had sparked the decision, but said it was a progressive problem which had to be addressed.

'It follows on from our most recent incident, which was basically the final straw,' Worsfold said after the club's intra-club practice match on Friday night.

'It was against what we expect from our players in preparing for training, so (Gardiner) didn't follow what we would say is a professional preparation to turn up and train with the guys.

'We saw it as our only option … Michael had plenty of opportunities in the past to address his professionalism in regards to our vision and he hasn't been able to do that.'"

To me that pretty much says it was a drug related issue. What the fuck do you want them to say? "Michael turned up for training with large pupils, started hugging everyone and suggested we warm up with a bit of a boogie".

b) it's near the start of the season, so there's no real news yet & this is "huge"
This is what i've been saying all along, the media blows this so out of proportion. I guess in a way we should be thankful its only a few players testing positive for recreational drugs and not rape allegations or assault charges like the NRL cops which has very serious repercussions on the sport.

c) drugs/treament of women has been a growing problem in australian football (across all codes) for the last couple of years
Totally agreed.

Umm, Sabbathen, correct me if Im wrong but I believe that the club does not get notified until the 3rd positive test?? Therefore, unless he turned up to training buzzing, I doubt he has been dropped for drug use. It is probably as the Eagles say, a case of his attitude towards being a professional footballer not being good enough. This probably includes attitude at training and work rate/effort being put in.

My cousin has rucked against him in both high school football and WAFL for awhile and probably was denied a look in at the Eagles because he was seen as the best WA has. Trust me when I say he has had a drug/disciplanary problem for a long time now. I never liked the guy and was dissapointed the Eagles even signed him up.

GO G-TOWN

'bout time they won something!!

they will fare well this year, the most encouraging thing to come out of saturday's win was the fact that it was a tough away win against quality opposition.. geelong haven't traveled well (like 2W/20 away games or something :meh: ) so they need to sort that out if they're to be a chance this year..

Moons provided a target up forward and always makes a contest.. but watch him this season when the pressure is off, when he doesn't have to share the ruck because Ottens and King will be back in the side.. Harley is still to come in..

gravy: how do ya think the dockers will fare?

they'll be in the news this year for either

1) winning a shitload of games and playing well

or

2) sacking their coach.

pre-season has been good, and I predict a stellar year from Hasleby (lost a lot of weight - possible brownlow chance) and Sandilands. Pav, McPharlin and Bell will go alright as usual, and both Carr brothers will get suspended for starting a massive brawl and smashing a few heads (apparently an all in brawl happened against Port on the weekend).

Peake will be on his way to star status and Duffield will win the Rising Star award.

Chigga
20-Mar-06, 09:54pm
I'll tell you now, the Dockers will be in the news for one reason only - Connolly getting the boot after Round 7, when they are sitting near the bottom with one win on the board, and Harvey takes over the reigns.....I hope for the sake of all you Docker supporters that this actually does happen. Also heard from a very, very good source, that if they don't start thinking about where they play Brett Peake, he will be asking to be traded at the end of the season.

the loss of Hadley and Lappin's a big blow though.

Chigga
20-Mar-06, 10:43pm
It is, but I dont think either of them were gonna come back and be the difference between last year and this year, although losing Lappin is a pretty big hole to fill. The fact that Brown is fit, and not suspended from round 1 is a huge plus....given the way he transformed the team on his return last season. Also Simon Black looks to be in good nick, and Vossy and Leppitsch as well.

And looking forward to see the continued improvement of Selwood and Sherman through the middle, Drummond down back, Jared Brennan to get through his injuries and realise his talent, and to see how the likes of Mitch Clark handle it when given the chance.

Get Scott Harding from Brisbane, just promoted off Rookie list to cover Hadley. Had an absolute cracker of a debut against the bombers. Also you have to get Marc Murphy, Number 1 pick. Expect Mitch Clark to get a fair crack up at Brisbane too, Marcus Drum at the Dockers, Thomas Dale at Collingwood, and Patrick Ryder at the Bombers. Ive picked all them up for my team anyway.

Also watched the local Fremantle derby on the weekend, was impressed with South Fremantle's Paul Duffield. Rookie listed at the Dockers, was giving away almost 10KG and 10cm to Polak on the weekend and did pretty well...could be a dark horse if there is a long term injury down at Freo.

Peake has busted his ass this pre season, he isnt happy with where he is being played and how he is being used. They should be playing him off a wing or half back flank, not in a forward pocket/half forward.

Fuck yeah! Good win for the weagles early up and to have that mental edge over the saints for later in the season. The lack of direction at goal is still a worry however there seems to be just as many, if not more running players into the forward line with the anti flooding rule. Which is great too might I add, the game seems to flow so much quicker without having to wait for the goal umpires flags. Kerr is set for a blinder this year if his shoulder holds up and Cousins picked up a lazy 25 possessions. Was great to see all the off field problems doesn't count for shit when he's on the park. All I need to see is us beat the Crows and the Cats away from home and i'll be convinced we are just as good as last year. OK i'll stop crapping on now *high 5 mikeynom* WINNER!!!

31-Mar-06, 02:49pm
Watched until half time. Although St Kilda weren't miles away on the score board, the Eagles looked really bloody comfortable.

Whereas the Saints looked to be running at 150% just to keep within 3 or 4 goals, the Eagles looked to be in cruise mode at times.

Might have been close on the board, but it was further away than the score suggests.

I think that Saints will fade over the year whereas the Eagles will strengthen.

Chigga
31-Mar-06, 04:00pm
I dont think last nights win would give the eagles a "mental edge" over the saints. It was at Subiaco oval after all, 24 of the past 25 Victorian sides to play West Coast there have lost (i think that was the stat), anyway, a win over St Kilda in Melbourne, yes the Eagles would gain a mental edge.

I thought West Coast played closer to their best football than the Saints did, and the same problem again has been highlighted - a lack of Goal kicking power. 3 goals combined from their 2 permanent forwards (Sampi and Lynch), the rest coming from singles mostly off midfielders boots. You cannot win a premiership playing that type of footy.

Geez, we came awful close last year tho!

Awful close doesn't put any silverware in the cabinet. Yes, you made the grand final, yes you only went down by 4 points, but there isn't going to be too many times when you kick 7 goals in a grand final and go down by less than 7 or 8 goals. Even the most one eyed supporters I know acknowledge there is a problem in the forward line.

Pancho
31-Mar-06, 05:12pm
with a midfield like the one they have, i think the problem isnt as major as everyone is making it out to be. no matter who they have down there theyre going to get the ball on a consistent basis and have it delivered well.

Even the most one eyed supporters I know acknowledge there is a problem in the forward line. Dennis Commetti made interesting points about that last night after the game - he said the grand final was really lost in the selection of the team on the Thursday before the game. Matera pulled out, Lynch wasn't picked and there were 2 players on the bench with no real roles in the team. Mistakes from inexperienced coaches, maybe?

Yeah, there's no doubt the forward line is a problem but its certainly one I can live with. As a fan, I really can't complain about a young team going 17-5 and making a gf. We're about 1 decent tall forward away from COMPLETE DOMINATION. :P (Which raises the spectre of Brad Smith, btw.)

I tell you what tho... as Ice T said:
"If you got onball problems I feel sorry for you son, I got 99 problems but a midfield ain't one".

Chigga
31-Mar-06, 06:24pm
Agree with what Commetti said, but his comments highlight the problems this year. Matera didnt play, was the leading goalkicker, now he is no longer there. Thats 30 or 40 goals that need to come from elsewhere. Lynch is fukn useless, he does not have a football brain. 17-5 was a great season, but how can they improve from there with the same list??

They should have traded Gardiner while they could have got something worthwhile. They should have chased Bradshaw harder 2 years ago. They threw all their eggs into one basket with a WAFL player.....yes he dominated that league, but you know how different it is to AFL level. One other thing missing - a genuine hard man/mongrel ie. a Jonathon Brown, Aaron Hamill, Glenn Archer - the guys who make you check over your shoulder.

On the midfield - best depth in the comp without question. When you can have Fletcher start a game on the bench, you know you got a good midfield.

Pancho
31-Mar-06, 06:33pm
i think theyre pretty hard across the board. not every1 has an archer or brown.. most dont. beau waters aggression is good to see. he is a hard nut, still young too. the teams attack on the ball was hard as last night.

they do lack a key forward. but i think itll only become a major problem when their midfield gets shut down and the ball doesnt come down as much, then they have to make the most of their chances. until then, only time will tell if their forward line can hold up

gardiner is a loser. :thumb:

Thats 30 or 40 goals that need to come from elsewhere. Lynch is fukn useless, he does not have a football brain. Sampi plays better without Matera on the ground. But I agree - the problem is where the hell we're going to replace Matera's goal kicking with this list. Rotating Cousins, Judd and Embley through the foward line is going to help, and if Cox can reguarly kick a couple that'll take the pressure off.

Also, Hansen lets himeself down with his kicking at goals sometimes.

17-5 was a great season, but how can they improve from there with the same list?? There wasn't really anyone they could have chased this preseason who would fit in with the club. I think the key forwards who were available were Fevola (no thanks) and Jonathon Hay?

One other thing missing - a genuine hard man/mongrel ie. a Jonathon Brown, Aaron Hamill, Glenn Archer - the guys who make you check over your shoulder. Chick is probably our toughest nut - and he did alright against Hamil last night. He's not really a mongrel but Hunter doesn't mind mixing it up a bit - do you remember when he knocked out Matty Lloyd in a final a couple of sesons ago?

yeah, and Matera was the player that racked large totals (4-6 goals) for the Eagles in very close wins in Melbourne last year (Richmond, Melbourne, Kangas). he had an excellent ability to travel, something i don't think sampi has as much.

the worrying thing for west coast is that it was fairly obvious how much their midfield dominated, but this isn't reflected on the scoreboard. back in their day the Lions, Port, Bombers buried sides that they dominated, ones that were close opponents too. last years grand final showed that when the eagles had their game going, they couldn't punish the swans.

and Grant Thomas is the shittest coach in the league.

Got 6 out of 8 first round up, so pretty happy with that. Only Swans letting me down (knew I should have picked the Bombers) and Carlton giving me a nice surprise were the ones I got wrong.

This weeks round is a bugger to tip.

Gone Saints over Tigers as it's a really a home game for both teams being an all Melbourne affair and lets face it the Tigers are shite.

Doggies to keep their good run going (how did they miss out on the Finals last year?? Tragedy) and to beat the Demons. The Dome is really becoming a fortress for the Dogs :)

Cats over the Kangas, but only because of home team advantage. Cats had a good win last week, but they have the ability to put the wobbly boots on after a win and the Kangas are looking better than their playing roster suggests. But then, dont they always.

Bombers to maul the Lions, but Brisbane at home are never a write off. Getting too damn old and lacking decent young draft picks.

Dockers at home to the Blues. Should be enough for a team that promises much and then shits itself. When will Carlton start to see the benefit of getting first choice draft picks for the past 2 seasons? Their squad looks horrid. I hope the kids come good soon.

Swans to get home against Port. Home advantage and the smarting feeling of beingt beaten last week should be enough. Plus Port are ageing and are under performing.

Hawks v Magpies is a horror to pick. Magpies should smash em, but if the Hawks get a lift from last weeks surprise and the Pies continue to play like a team that hasnt been introduced the Hawks could sneak this one too. Pies to win in a tight one I think.

The Crows love playing at home and they are getting stronger and stronger. Could be enough to see them home against the Sparrows. Mind you, if the Westies were at home I'd be reversing my opinions.

pretty disappointed by the swift fall of Brisbane, the past two games they've lost by a combined total of over 200 points. used to love watching them play.

Has everyone seen the Robert Walls' article re: the Dockers? Geez, the man is a farking tool. He needs to take a deep breathe a remember that its just 1 round.

i'd agree if they had a slow preseason, but they came out all guns blazing, claiming they were going to take it all. as much of a dickhead that he is, Walls makes a fair point, targets a few lazy players, and says stuff which is well known, but isn't put in damning black and white for all to see. i strongly doubt that many players get a true idea of what those outside think of them. and it's good he doesn't target the coach - a lot of the players are premiership players or nominated for all-australian, so blaming the coach is pretty pissweak. anyway, i digress.

how about those western bulldogs, hey?

Well Lambretta, we already are seeing the benefit in one YOUNG Mark Murphy, how much more can a debutant 18 year old do to inspire. Dont forget beeing left in the draft wilderness for two years with NO picks REALLY hurt and will still see thos effects linger for a while to come. Watch this space because by years end you will see another 2 maybe 3 early draft picks from this year and last come into the scope.

As for Lance, yeah he's not the fittest bloke in the league but the boy Can play and is one hell of a reader of the game....

Carn da Blues, Dockers are next on the agenda. beat them this week and watch Perth go to town on Freo like never before!!

A rough guess with no real thought put into it.

1. Adelaide
2. Geelong
3. Sydney
4. West Coast
5. St Kilda
6. Western Bulldogs
7. My beloved Kangaroo's
8. Essendon
9. Collingwood
10. Richmond
11. Carlton
12. Melbourne
13. Brisbane Lions
14. Port Adelaide
15. Fremantle
16. Hawthorn

At the end of the day the AFL is won on basically one thing, injuries. There was a piece in a newspaper by Mike Sheehan straight after the Grand Final that had the clubs in order of where they came on the ladder in '05 and the number of injuries that club had as well. It was almost mirror like in accuracy

Essendon will finish around 8th - 12th depending on injures, if lloydy, lucas, hird or either of the johnsons miss over 6 weeks they are in major trouble. I also think Jobe Watson will be a major bust.

that goes for every team in the comp. we've had at least one or a number of those guys miss an extended period of time over the past few years and seem to go alright. its probably a sign of our depth of top-tier players that you named so many who are capable of such an impact on a team.

I think essendons second tier players unlike an Adelaide or a Geelong really aren't that great, hence the big turnover to other clubs and delistings most seasons. Adam McPhee is an out and out star though.
