Thorpe out of Comm Games

Olympic and world champion swimmer Ian Thorpe has withdrawn from Australia's Commonwealth Games team due to illness.

An ill-looking Thorpe made the announcement at a press conference in Sydney this afternoon.

The five-time Olympic gold medallist has been suffering from bronchitis in addition to a mystery illness, which had severely curtailed his training since last month's Australian selection trials in Melbourne.

He recently underwent a series of medical tests, which were unable to determine the nature of the illness.

Thorpe was due to compete in the 100 metres and 200m freestyle events, as well as the three relays.

from what i just heard he apparently looks very ill..

I find it hard to believe that champion athletes like him can motivate themselves to compete in ho-hum competitions like the com games

fuck the Commonwealth Games is a joke, just a chance for Australia to kick the shit out of everyone and try and feel better about the shithouse nation that we are. Now we can compete at the Olympics this is so irrevelent, except for the athletes i guess..

I reckon he's saving himself for more important comps like the world championships although he prolly is sick.

At least we wont have "Watch Ian Thorpe tonight @ 7pm carrying the hopes of a nation etc etc" ads every two seconds.

I don't know what it is aboput Thorpe.
Even though he seems like a down to earth and all round descent bloke from what i've seen, there's just something about his look that shits me.
and who cares about him anyway, he's had enough time in the limelight.

Didnt he sit out last years world championships because he 'needed a break'?
Im fed up with out pampered athletes, namely our swimmers.
Ill give Thorpe, Hacket and a few of the female swimmers some credit, but the rest of them are are fucken useless welfare leeches.

IMO he is just a big softie... Gets a runny nose and decides to pull out... my good mate is competing in the Weightlifting at the Comm Games and the personal and financial heartache he went through to make the team was unbelievable and then someone who is paid MILLIONS of $$$ decides he is too cool to swim... Your swimming for your country thorpie.. I would think nothing less of him if he swam sick and missed the final or missed a medal.. shows a bit of heart and ticker that he actually had a crack...

and who cares about him anyway, he's had enough time in the limelight. He's one of the greatest athletes in the history of world sport. To think what he's accomplished at his age is absolutely phenomenal. "He's had enough time in the limelight" - what a ridiculous statement.

I also refuse to believe that he's faking illness just coz he doesn't wanna swim com games. If he wanted to "save himself" for world championships etc [which is ridiculous. Why does he need to save himself? It's not like the competitions are on top of each other] then he'd say so.

Your swimming for your country thorpie.. I would think nothing less of him if he swam sick and missed the final or missed a medal.. shows a bit of heart and ticker that he actually had a crack...Sometimes it's not always about missing a final or missing a medal. He's probably thinking about his health. I know so many swimmers [including myself] who trained full-on through illness, and ended up having weeks or even months off because their condition deteriorated. In the end, you end up missing more competitions and fucking up your training if you're not sensible about easing off when you're not well.

With Ian...i personally think his motivation levels are shot to shit and he's a bit over it all. I reckon he's lost the heart for swimming [in fact i think he lost it years ago when he left his coach Doug Frost] but just can't bring himself to retire. Quitting swimming and entering the "real world" is a really really hard and scary thing to do.

Anyway...as someone else mentioned, Ian isn' the entire Australian swimming team ;)
The women are swimming seriously fast times at the moment, which is a nice change. It's usually the female swimmers who're dragging the chain at the big events

I'm amazed at some of the expectations that people have.

Everyone gets sick occasionly, and there is nothing you can really do about it. If you're sick, you generally can't go to work. This effect is exacerbated if you are an elite athlete who relies on being fit to compete.

Why can't you just accept that he is sick so he can't swim....simple as that. Would you rather he competes and comes last because he is nowhere near his best?

I only get sick after massive benders..

You reckon thorpie went to the Future Music Festival and went to hard dancing to AVB?

the funniest thing i noticed bout this whole thorpie saga (besides the fully sick joke :)) is the south african coach (ryk neethlings coach i think it was), came out in the papers yesterday morning claiming thorpie was "foxing" and playing mind games and it was all a big conspiracy and that australian sports people and teams are forever playing these games, then 2 hours later the story broke that he was out. haha what a muppet!!

how long has it been since Thorpe has actually swum in a high level competition?

either way its poor news for him, and he aint looking to grand. Not terribly surprised tho his situation has happend to many other athletes.

I cant believe some of the comments in this thread.

Some of you need a real fucking wake up call.

Thanks to Squee and Punk for actually talking some sense.

Thorpie is pretty ill. Having seen him on tv and in the press and reading that he struggled to swim 12 laps of a pool, I understand his decision to pull out of the games.

If he didnt want to compete he wouldnt have swum in the trials. He's sick.

His illness is a mystery and comments about his sexuality or rumours of anti immune deficiency syndrome do no one any good.

I hope Ian gets well soon and I hope that his illness brings more medal glory for the Poms :P

(only kidding, sif we're gonna win anything)

Ive reconsidered my previous post regarding thorpe and in hindsight have come to the conclusion that i wasnt harsh enough on him.

The guys a little wuss. His illness is not a mystery at all, hes got bronchitis. If he wasnt such a nancy boy he would have put it all on the line for his country, the country thats supported him and made him rich and famous for paddling around a swimming pool. Footballers play with broken jaws, boxers fight with cut up faces and broken noses, but poor thorpe cant do 4 laps in a pool because hes got a cough.
There is no doubt he could have competed and maybe even won, and if he didnt he would have at least tried, but he plain quit.
If he was a real man he would have swam for his country until he sunk.

there was a post by someone in the "Sydney" forum about 2 nights ago, that pointed to a SMH article, and that posting said something along the lines of "Read this article, and doesn't this make Ian Thorpe a homosexual with a cocaine issue" or something like that.

i haven't been able to find that posting anymore.

besides, if somebody is ill, ... then they should be allowed to recover in peace. sensationalist news is only there to grab attention.
