I have this full contact sparring thing tonight at Taekwondo and I always get this nervous energy before hand. I always try and channel this energy into something useful and positive instead of just getting nervous.
Anyone have any tips on how to get in the right frame of mind for competitive sport?

don't waste that nervous energy before yor fight. stay calm and relaxed.. a lot of people burn out before things like this.. don't over warm-up.. just stay chilled.. all the prep has been done - nothing you do immediately before-hand will make any great difference except wasting yor energy ;)

good luck :thumb:

thats good advice - i think i'll just do leisurely stretches. relaxing is good! think i'll lie down under my desk....my boss wont notice.

depending on the sport i either try to relax as has already been suggested or i put some Silverchair (has to be frogstomp as that was their only good album) in the old mp3 player and get ready to crack skulls. This never fails to get me amped and i only play soccer

all i can offer is to keep your energy levels up, perhaps take some glucodin (if thats allowed) make sure your properly hydrated, you are properly stretched and go over your strategy

when i used to compete in TKD tournys i would often come out of one bout and straight into another one with a different opponent so my energy was very depleted

well good luck for tonight

in school sport I used to think about a girl who i had a crush on in high school but didn't like me :(

that always did the trick for the first run/tackle then it wasn't a real issue (played union)... swimming was easy since i started it later, i had something to prove to all the little cunts that had done it since year 7.

but since I've had a girlfriend for 3 years... that may not work anymore :(

these days it's with a coopers and some midly amusing pre match drinking games :thumb:

With contact sports I keep telling myself how much the opposition wants to smash me, that they think i'm a piece of shit etc etc. This is while listening to screamo. :thumb:

The more experience you get, the less nervous you become.

Confidence and ability play a big part. The nerves turn into motivation, well for me anyway.

i agree with experience!...
well, i fought last night and results were 50:50
first bout i did ok initially then last bit my defence let me down - i got floored with right kick to head (F&#K). Next bout was much better as i did a few good kicks and next one i got some punching in but evens at the end..
thanks for advice and  to doing the Haka
