View Full Version : The Music Shop Civic - Time to Say Goodbye

Everyday at lunch i walk past it (never in it) and everyday it belts out "time to say goodbye" by antonio botochilli and sarah brighto. every stinky day. i feel for those poor people who work in that shop. surely the best bit about working in a music store is listenin to new tunes, etc but those poor fools gotta listen to the same thing, over and over and over and over and over and over again.

i'm sure its against the geneva convention or sompin

Yeah, noticed that very same thing, and it is for that reason that I refuse to step foot inside their poxy shop.

You really need a good soundtrack for music shopping, and the Music Shop doesn't cut it.

On that note... top 5 soundtracks to my cd shopping

5 - Hearing the sterophonics new one on Fri night waiting for a friends outside impact...
4. Be Here Now by Oasis being played from start to finnish at midnight the day it was released at HMV Singapore, and seeing at least 25% of the previously die-hard oasis fans who had turned up go "this is shithouse" or words to that effect and *not* by the record
3. The Herbaliser Band @ landspeed
2. Hearing the entire new Groove Armada one @ landspeed and falling in love with it (still havent bought it, but i will... oh yes, i will)
1. Hearing this cool minimal trance/ tech stuff at impact one day, staying in the store for all of the 70 mins or so of it, and asking dude behind the counter what it was... he showed me the cd and said "If you like this, come to fang..."

HAHAHA! i have the same gripe with the Belco store! WTF is going on?!! I thought maybe i was cursed and it was just an unluckly coincidence that i happen to go to the music shop whenever they play that suicidal anthem, ahhhh... it's comforting to know there are others out there. :o) Still spewing about the song tho, it's like 3 years old as well, innit?! Something fishy goin on, let's start a resistance...! ;o)

yeah music shop sucks arse!!!!! ages ago they were quite good when the likes of graham and archie worked there and DJs played on Friday nite......now they're just crap...they don't sell vinyl anymore and they don't let you put posters up or flyers down anywhere.....i remember hearing something about that stupid bocelli song why it got played so much but i don't remember.....will look into that one :)

my theory is they think its selling em more records - not a very sophisticated theory i admit. but man - it just phishes me orf so much i can't go in there. the people that work there must need counselling. they prob listen to black flag or gabba when they get home to clean out the sinuses.

Its always been that way....during my brief tenure there I had to listen to the Sarah Brightman album repeatedly and also be subjected to the relentless evil that is the first Dru Hill album (complete and utter shite).
They used to have rotated 'feature' albums which would be played every second pick (every other was taken in turns to be chosen by the staff - oh how I miss the few brief times when myself and Sketchy Gray would be working on a sunday....musical bliss!) but yeah it seems they have found have some bleating fat opera hound pumping on the pa is their weapon of choice.
Weather the storm children, and let your absence be the first nail in the coffin of the strangulating financial death they deserve.
Me, bitter?

This has absolutely zero to do with the current thread, but reading it makes me wonder, why, every single time I have been at the gym lately and i mean, in the past 3/4 months, they play Craig David - its just not right somehow.

maybe it's a message... maybe the motto is that you shouldn't be spending your time in crap record shops and gyms??

Listening to craig david is good when your using the punching bag... "Im walking a-wayyyyy" no your not mate your staying right here and im pummeling you... "wednesday thursday friday saturday" motivation to kick yo fool ass every day of the week craig... "all over your 'boink' " Ill give you boink!
and so on and so forth...
I cant hate the music shop too much - its where i got my copy of meems record in the cool wooden box thingy.

Dave ill lend it to you when i get back to canberra in a few weeks... whilst its not the greatest cd, you need it at least once a fortnight or so (especially to weird out the housemates who think they're coming to understand this dance music stuff...)

Sysex
25-Jan-02, 09:39pm
yeah, machines and records once a month to keep me sane, yum yum & miffy to do just the oppostie.
Have you ever seen meem djing??
I saw him last NYE (errrr 2000/2001) and I'm still recovering from having my head blown off, and being almost reduced to tears on the dancefloor!!!

i regret that it is the same in woden, time to say goodbye is thrashed. i used to think i wanted it played at my funeral, because it's the kind of song that makes people cry, so it would be easier for people to pretend that they were actually sad that i died. that all changed the 656th time i heard it, courtesy of our friends at the music shop.

while we're talking funerals, what song would everyone want played at their's?? i hope that's not an overly macabre topic...

Alistair
27-Jan-02, 06:03pm
Meem--- only ever seen him doing the "live" thing, tweeking knobs and pushing buttons... but both times (the first at last years BDO) and second at one of the final Scissors Paper Rocks... unreal.

Livian - maybe now if you played it at your funeral, it would make it easier for everyone to pretend they were actually at the music shop...

Ive thought about what i want played at my funeral heaps, and always have too many ideas/themes. It prob depends on how i die, but i think at the moment i would want one of my self made britpop mix-tapes played first, then tosca suzuki and finnish it off with some deep dark nasty jungle.

i saw meem at winter magic in katoomba last year - brilliant! we were walking down from the gearins where explanetary had just played an excellent latino hip hop set, and walked down past a service station to a house where the garage had been converted into a dance floor complete with fire in a 44 gallon drum and streamers/lights. a couple of people were playing huge drums and meem & 5000ad were playing this incredible groove!

they were playing billy idol today!! wooee! i even slowed down a little - yes, in the rain without an umbrella - to listen.

i think its nasty for them to pump out time to say goodbye so regularly. its an oft used funeral song (it was used at my nans funeral a few years ago, for instance). that can really fcuk up someones day to hear it.

but.. i guess most music shops don't choose their play list based on popular funeral tunes, do they?

well i just heard the inside word and apparantly everytime they play it, 2 or 3 people come in and buy the CD. Think of how many frickin' times they play it in a day, and how that translates into sales. Not too bad

yeah, but i heard them playing DECENT music the other day. Cant remember what it was, but im pretty sure it might have been breaks. Of course i could just have a @!#$ memory. either way, it was ok.

I've just sent this letter with a heap of signatures to the Music Shop, maybe you guys might want to do the same....

The Manager
The Music Shop
Garema Court City Walk
Canberra ACT 2601

RE: YOUR CITY STORE

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to you concerning an issue that I’m sure is of concern to those that value their sanity and like to enjoy a bit of peace and sunshine in Garema Place.

When The Music Shop opened three years ago, there was a ray of light shone upon the music retail market in Canberra – finally a franchise had opened that wasn’t a pale imitation of Sanity. Finally, there was a store other than Impact that stocked decent music at a decent price.

Lately it appears though, that things have taken a turn for the worst.

We’ve tolerated the garish lighting that you have installed in your City store, we’ve tolerated the fact that all your staff have moved to JB’s only to be replaced by ‘hip’ Sanity clones, we’ve tolerated the disappearance of all your decent stock 18 months ago, we’ve tolerated the removal of the vinyl stock, we’ve tolerated the replacement of the listening stations with cheap ghetto blasters, we’ve tolerated the rubbish that you peddle as sale stock, we’ve tolerated the crass diversification into books, and we’ve tolerated your comparatively high CD prices – but PLEASE STOP PLAYING THAT F*&KING SARAH BRIGHTMAN CD!!!!!!!!

Have you signed an exorbitant contract with EMI to play ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ 20 times a day?

Surely there’s some other bland MOR music that you can use to attract the middle-aged lunchtime business demographic (Genesis? Dire Straits?) – its not like you’re short of CDs to play….

Yours in exasperation,

LOL I wish I could see their reaction! Although I wouldnt be surprised if it was just some old manager dude who has recently come in and made all these crap changes and thinks he's right with everything he does. I can see him rolling his eyes and going "Ahh the youth of today, what do they know!"

OK, if they sell like 2 or 3 cd's everytime they play that @!#$, wouldn't they sell more cd's if they played good music as ppl would hear it and actually want to buy it??? Just a thought,
