I noticed there was no thread where we could all express our great pride and bask in the glory of our national success at these games, so i thought i could kick it off.

Special congratulations to Libby Lenton. I really enjoy watching our overrated and pampered swimmers lose. Well done libby, you failed miserably infront of your home crowd. :thumb:

I thought the games were already in progress last week. I was talking to my brother and said "so how are we doing in the games?" and he told me they hadn't even started yet lol. I cop shit for knowing nothing about sport in a sports family ;D

Anyway, I hope that little bugger who gave up his Olympic place for Thorpie does well.

It's already been done - Australia's Biggest Loser.

It's Day One and the number of Australian Gold medals is already downright embarassing. The OTT nationalistic coverage of "Gold, gold, gold for Australia" could backfire on Channel 9, as we're all turned off by all the smug bogans invading our screens.

Show us the little guys from countries we've never heard of!

I give no shit, internet is where I spend most of my nights when there is nothing better to do and thats not going to change in a hurry, TV rots your brain.......

Seriously though Lenny how did you become so bitter?

Unwarranted and contrived adulation is disgusting. It encourages the undeserving and discourages the deserving. It feeds the evil and weakens the good.
The whole world revolves around this twisted sphere or injustice.
Our athletes are part of this circle of moral corruption, so they must face reprisals when they fail the country that supports their selfish antics.

Ahhh Lenny, I love you.

Admit it, you tried out for the girls hockey team, but they wouldn't let you play and it's left you all bitter.

Now you stand on the other side of the chain link fence, rubbing your crotch and staring at those little skirts saying "it should have been me".

Chin up. There's always the ParaOlympics. They must have a segment for emotional cripples. Go join in :thumb:

The year 2000 was in the 20th Century too. I guess you're the kind of idiot who thought 2000 was the start of the new millenium, right?

It's actually quite sad that the Sydney games were only twice as big as Melbourne, considering that the world population increased by far more than double in the time between them.

The Commenwealth games are such a half rate games it's not funny. One third of the worlds countries who claim to be part of the population, uh-huh. Funny how the games are scheduled at such a time to maximise Australian gold while minimizing everyone else's chances (eg track n field). Oh well.

Add to the fact that the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp) was begged to show the games in Canada, shows how little interest there is in the rest of the Commenwealth.

It depends on how you rate #1.

Size isn't everything. Melbourne consistantly outranks Sydney in the Standard of living polls. They are by far a better way of judging a city. After all, we have to live with the places.

Would Sydneys transport, nightlife, or arts programs beat Sydneys? No, of course not. But Sydney has the beaches and the natural beauty of the harbour.

It always makes me laugh listening to Australians crap on about which city is better and why. It's like you're so paranoid that your town might actually be worse that you have to bag the other one out.

I'm a neutral, having grown up in the UK, and I live in Sydney, which at times I love. However I can see that Melbourne actually has many benefits over Sydney and given the option I would choose Melbourne over Sydney as my preferred City. But it's a subjective opinion. I doubt if Melbourne or Sydney can rightly claim to be #1. Whatever the fuck that means.

.

Comparing Sydney to Melbourne is like comparing London to Birmingham.

Because a city is rated higher in standard of living polls(how ever thats determined , who knows, im sure the weather isnt a part of the judging process) is like comparing that city to the no.1 safest/economical car on the road (Ford Falcon/Toyota camry).

Excellent reply TBD

" Don’t get too exited about livability, or people claiming they have found ‘the world’s most livable city’. Livability is not a brilliant measure of whether somewhere is a ‘great’ place to live.

That is, whether it is inspiring, beautiful or fun. Frankfurt in Germany for example rates very highly in the ‘livability’ index, but is seen by Germans as a dull centre for commerce, somewhere to do business and leave. That is, no one really wants to ‘live’ there.

The Toyota Camry is the cheapest family car to run, is very reliable and practical. But would you really want to own one? "

This isnt about the best city! This is about Australia hosting a major sporting event, and once again, showing the world how we do it best.

Alot of the things learnt from Sydney 2000 have been used again in Melbourne. Sydney 2000 was not only achievement for the city of Sydney but for the country as whole, as is the same with Melbourne.

Born and lived in Melbs for 20 odd years, visited Sydney once. Sydney for its natural beauty and climate wins hands down
Melbs has better clubs, arty type things to do

but I would live in neither as city living and having long travel times for work during the week and exorbitant rents aint living, Melbs is good to visit when its worth going to, ie weekends :)

Shes too shit to even make the final of B grade events, god knows how much funding this state level performer has sucked over up the years for nothing more than embaressment. Hardly. Have you ever been to London or Birmingham??

London, population 8-9 million
Birmingham, population 1.5 million

Sydney, population 4 million
Melbourne, population 3.5 million

London is a Capital City which contains the Parliament, the Palaces of the Royals, Castles, the Underground etc. London is the home of the arts, the seat of government, the home of, well everything of importance in the UK.

Birmingham is a regional City which contains, well, some Brummies.

You could make decent comparisons between say Manchester and Birmingham or Glasgow and Edinburgh, or Swansea and Cardiff, but you sure as shit couldn't compare London with Birmingham and come up with any realistic comparisons.

Sydney and Melbourne have similar populations, both have regional governments without being the Nations Capital etc. Sure they have their differences, in sports, lifestyles, transport etc but they are comparable Cities.

Oh and standard of living research takes into account many things, such a cost of buying homes, cost of living, transport, availability of employment, facilities, infastructure, nightlife and culture etc. In many areas Melbourne is actually a better place to live than Sydney. Oh and Sydney gets more rainfall in volume than Melbourne and Melbourne doesnt suffer from stifling humidity. So take your weather arguement and stick it up your labradoodle.

Craig is great - he was in my class at primary school pretty much the whole way through.

Even from a young age he had real talent in long distance running, which he has obviously developed amazingly over the years. Even though he won the silver and not the gold, it can't be overlooked that in the process he beat the previous record, and the only guy who beat him is phenominal.

but, overall.. the commonwealth games are shit. they do as much harm as they do good, cos when australia competes against top nations and get beaten it will be like.. "Australia not competing to the levels they were achieveing at the commonwealth games".. we come crashing back to earth with a thud.

matt targett who got disqualified in the butterfly i think ? summed it up best.. when asked how he felt about getting dq'd he said "oh well, ill get over it" and walked off.

mottram was the first white guy in 18 years to stand on the world champship dias who wasnt african, now that an achievement.

i think the comm games are good for sport, give aspiring athletes a chance to taste international competition, and hopefully use it as as stepping stone to bigger and better things, its all in the name of fun anyway.

And you make such a good account of yourself with comments like that.

A case of taking one to know one, perhaps.

I would also tell you to fuck off to England, but it really doesnt deserve such a cruel and unusual punishment

I thought the closing ceremony was pretty pathetic. Seriously, what a load of shit, India showed us up x1000 in their 15 mins. Musically, it was good (though I thought the sound coming through was a bit poor)otherwise......

Did anyone else catch Tony Jones talking to that 13 year old girl, how he crushed her

Just got back from Melbourne this morning and I have to say we had a fantastic time down there.
Melbourne was just alive this weekend. The weather was perfect, the city looked amazing, the volunteers were so friendly and the games were organised perfectly.

The closing ceremony was great. Never been to one of those things before so I was a bit dubious about it having watched the opening on tv and thinking 'what rubbish'. But being in the stadium was something else. There was a real sense of excitement and overall I really enjoyed it.

Pretty hilarious watching John Farnham mess up his biggest song and the stuff up with michael klim's speech. But everything else worked well. I thought the Indian segment was the best part but also enjoyed ben lee, and the dame edna bit was funny.

Melbourne did a great job with the games. The fact the games were held just walking distance from the city centre gave the whole city the excitement. Melbourne is certainly a city I would like to live in one day.

.What did he stuff up on in his song? I missed it. I kind of thought the Klim thing was planned to be like that, even though I thought it was odd they would interrupt a speech like that.....

He messed up the first verse into the bridge. I think he started singing too early or too late. Something definitely went wrong. Even the aussies thought so.

Yeah I thought he was keeping quiet so that the crowd would sing but it didn't work very well and ended up sounding shit.

Does anyone else think it would be more interesting if Australian states competed seperately in the Commonwealth games? After all the United Kingdom doesn't compete as the UK, it competes as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so why can't AUstralia do the same? It would be way more interesting as currently we all know Australia will absolutely piss all overthe rest of the feild, if the states competed individually NSW and Victoria would probably still ber right up there but there'd be an added element of inter-state rivalry, plus major bragging rights if one state topped the entire table.

i think it would be more interesting if they bothered including other countries winning medals in the telly coverage. even gold medals.

maybe even showing the odd event where australia wasn't going to win something.

. . . sick to death of the australian games. thank god it's over & i can now watch minger st in the afternoons.

Good call would make it alot more interesting.
Think you'd find Qld would rank above Vic and possibly even NSW.

Word to that. I remember the night of the Rugby Sevens finals, they showed the semi (Aus vs NZ) then the Bronze playoff (Aus vs Fiji) then cut to the Friday night NRL match, I didn't catch the final until about 3 in the morning when I was blind drunk. The next day when I checked the papers and TV highlights all they were talking about was Scott Fava getting KO'd, there was no mention AT ALL about who actually won the final. Are Australians that disinterested in sport when they aren't winning?

Personally I have little to no interest in seeing any other country receiving their medals or even watching them play, unless it was say for the gold medal.

Thats all most of us want, but most of the time they weren't even showing that. See my post above re the Rugby Sevens.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Tamsin Lewis on being a filthy fucking cheating snake in the grass.

In the relay, she knew she would be beaten, so instead of sorting out the placings in the hand over, she waited out of line, and then made an official complaint after the event had finished.

If she had any type of sense of fair play, she would have moved in front of the English girl and taken her beating on the chin.

She's a slimy little fucking shit and I hope she never races again for the rest of her life and she ends up on a checkout in fucking Woolies.

My winner for the low life of the games award.

Fair enough then.

But Lewis should have done the sporting thing and said something, not kept quiet and then gone for the disqualification.

It makes her look like a petty bitch who has to rely on cheating rather than talent.
