Hated that Speed Racer tune, absoluely abysmal, Here's Johnny was rubbish too.
Sesame Street - Smart Es, aweful

Hated a lot of the commercial stuff like Ground Level, and that piano explosion around 92-93. I mean there were great tunes with some piano (eg. Hypnotist - house is mine) but so many were just dire IMO, and still are.

I liked all ground level :)

Anything by ultrasonic was pretty tragic too.

Anja

Nah, US had a few good tracks, the mad acid ones like "check your head"
Marmion's "Schönberg" is another, I'd run a mile not to hear that again, there's nothing Schön about it ;)

We're buggin' by Vagen
I know there are an amazing number of people who have an attachment to it, but I just don't see where.
It sure as hell was buggin' me, it's so freakin' inane!

Vertigo Hypo were a great early local Melbourne act :)

lil louise - French Kiss , or whatever the hell it's called. I don't care how many drugs you've had or how many remixes you've heard it SUCKS!

Also that Speedy J track that goes "BOING BOING BOING". Yes I know most speedy J stuff is pretty cool but......

I also can't stand JB - forklift now, I blame you know who for that one :PP

US had a lot of really good tracks- even with lee mallorca MCing over them..., try and listen to them without the vocals (or ignore the vocals)

plus if you like old trance, listen to hour of chaos they released- you might be suprised.

What track is that? Speedy J's "Pullover" with the siren type effect annoys many after many years, but the only thing I can think of from a similar period was that god awful "Poing" by Rotterdam Termination Squad.

Anything in that horrid UK Breakbeat/Rave style I certainly can't stand.

Anja
24-Mar-06, 09:49am
Pullover was ok, played now and again, most of SpeedyJ's stuff is mint. eg. Pannik.
Poing on the other hand, absolute shit, some of the Dutch hardcore was such rubbish compared to the German/US stuff

There was some stupid really hardcore track years and years ago, and the lyrics were "All I ever wanted to do was f*** my best friend", they used to play it to death and it was just awful.

Yeah it was pretty cheesey, wasn't it. I remember walking into Colossus 1994 and Peewee was playing it. I'd never heard it before, my friend and I called it the Farmyard Song for a while until I ended up with a CD with it on it, and found out what it was caLLed. Shocking song, priceless memory though.

This was a bit later on but Charlie Lownoise and Mental Theo had a track called 'The Ultimate Sex Track'

Quite possibly the worst song ever produced...

For those that don't remember it, it was the one that repeatadly said 'Check check check the penis'

That'd be Interactive.

Though not as bad as their "Forever Young" shocker a couple of year's later. Which, of course, means I can't even consider the version in the charts right now.

Now how about their first (or the first track by them I know): "Amok"

"AMOOOOOOKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK........!!!!"

Rate it: Yay/Nah*

(*Given the too-close-for-comfort resemblance to Illiminatae's "Tremora Del Terror", my money's on the "Tremora Del Terror for the darker, deeper tip).

The surprise treat from Interactive, IMO, was the b-side to Amok, aptly titled Koma (ie. Amok backwards). Lovely tune. Bet a lot of (Sydney) people would know if they heard it, yet not put the name on the face. Pretty special in my books.

BTW, do you also know the Tremora Del Terror track by Illuminatae from the same era (that features the identical 'off the beat' lead synth riff, darker sound, no vocal snippets and a bit of acid thrown in for good measure?)

Koma -> beautiful old track, very uplifting. I got it recently on a japanese cd called "Frogman Presents Spunky Chorus" ... which I ordered used from japanese amazon - completely blind... he he I was pretty happy when it arived and was what I thought it was! Only cd I could find that was ever released that had Anti Vista's "Ahh yeah" ...

Jaydee - Plastic Dreams
Beltram - Energy Flash

And to top it off, I heard them played that many times growing up it shat me to tears.
Also
Underworld - Born Slippy

Samtastic
25-Jun-06, 03:45am
^^ :O Plastic Dreams! No way, that song is incredible. It's so soft and inviting, but then it sucks you in with that building (organ?) riff. I seriously rate that song.

I can understand your Born Slippy hate. Though i think it's a brilliant tune (but far from Underworld's best, for that'd be either M.E., Cowgirl or Rez), it was played to death back in the day wasn't it? (i'm too young to know - it's a credit to my name that i even know some of these songs)

Still, i want to nominate (for a second time) Hocus Pocus' - "Here's Johnny" Fuuuuck. That song is shit. It starts off so promissing, with that strange growling, but then that dumb hi-pitched vacuum patch comes in before the fucked up beat takes it away..... "heeeeere's Johnny!" .... and don't i wish he'd fuck off?!
Though i dig the sample "[gabba?]DJ let the bass drum go like..."

For a really crap oldschool lyrical house tune i nominate Kelly Charles' "You're no good for me" It's just boring, but jeez, didn't the Prodigy do an awesome job with the same line!

And E-Zee Possee's "Everything Starts With an E (rhythm stick mix)" the main line is great (just because of the simple pun), but the rest of the tune, from the animal samples to the ragga (?) lyrics, is dumb.

ZyklonB

I agree with you on Heres Johnnny. Those 3 are tunes I grew up with and never liked but crowds used to go off to anyway.
The last time I heard someone play Heres Johnny, I abused the dj to which he replied it's old school and to which I replied I don't give a fuck, it's garbage. So I am with you on that one.

I can tolerate most of that stuff - there's been plenty of times I danced to Cold as Ice or Here's Johnny and had a great time... but that Rainbow in the Sky - grrr. I can't even listen to that.

But the worst of all... I Can't Stop Raving.

Hearing that for the first time was about enough to make me stop raving.

Shine On. Waaaah waaaah waaaah, it's so awful.

Same deal with Needin You, Gypsy Woman (strangely don't mind the recent remix though... ), Such a Good Feeling, Show Me Love.

Wait, I think it may just be that I can't stand gay vocal diva house, esp with piano?! Have them all on old skool compilations and when I hear them I feel just a teeny, tiny bit like I wasted my money.

Bring on cheesy rave anthems!!!

here's an old Mixmag worst records of all time from 1998. Still on their site.

http://www.techno.de/mixmag/98.04/WorstRecords/WorstRecords.1.html

i sing that Rod Stewart ripoff from time to time and most ppl give me a blank stare ;D

Infectious did a track that sampled "I need your lovin'". Granted there were some ordinary hardcore mixes .. but the jungle mixes kicked ass ... and still do !!

and if people hate Forklift ... that just gives me all the more incentive to play it ;)

I think when Voodoo People came out i was pissed out by that getting flogged everywhere. My reasoning was that if they had the song that meant they had the single or the album and there were better tracks/mixes on those than the same ol' same ol'

Darude - Sandstorm
William Orbit - Addagio for Strings

not strictly old school ... but certainly a couple of older tracks that many people went nuts over and i just couldn't get into them

2) Heres Johnny pointless shit on took off in Australia not my country.
3) Speed Racer as above.

Loops & Tings remix by Marco V is awesome dance tune.
Adagio 4 Strings remix by Tiesto is simply awesome and an amazing night ending track.

And on Scooter some of his old school music is awesome if HE JUST LEARNED TO SHUT HIS MOUTH, nobody cares how much is the cow, Scooter don't MC and you'd be loved by a lot of people.

Music had changed by then, techno became cold dark atmospheric sounds.
Parties became very serious and the music became far too intellectual....

Regarding Climax... I was lucky to be good friends with Scott Alert and Greg N, Scott in some respects took me under his wing and allowed me to do the warm up set at Climax from early 1995 right through until mid 1996, and occasionaly letting spin some tunes during the last set of the night, where the likes of Scott Alert and Greg N played old skool week in week out... The popularity of this I believe lead Jeff and Richie to put on the first retro night at Chinese Laundry, then Belfast..

Big Climax old skool tunes

Blackout - Lii Louie
Total Confusion - vocal mix
Terra Del Morra - Illuminate
Magic Orchestra (CJ Bolland mix) - B -sides
Fast Forward the Future - Zodic Youth
Die Wisse Hai - Torsten fenslau

Come into my Life - Abfarht
Sounds of Eden - Shades of Rhythm

Can't say I know much of his stuff, however a couple I absolutely luuuuurve are:

Trancition (Mongolian 303 Heaven) - Choci And The Freedom Of Sound
Return To Trancition - Choci And The Freedom Of Sound

Smooth early progressive acid trance numbers (especially 303 Heaven track) that build, and build, and BUILD, AND BUILD!!!

Sensational stuff. On my all time fave list.

Chiz is it because you can't stop raving?

I hate N-Trance - Set You Free with a passion!

Uh - in a word - no. I disliked it imediately because, ironically, it was one of the tunes that signalled the end of what I consider raving.

But then it was pretty much all downhill in terms of HHC after what I consider the last real HHC anthem - "Renegade Rewind".

Yeah I was joking.

Renegade Rewind the last HHC anthem? Your joking aren't ya. Renegade Rewind was released in '96. How many happy hardcore MONSTERS came out during '96 - 97...
Burnin Love, Believe in the Future, Happy Generation, Together in Dreams, Drop it, XTC Love, Party Non Stop, Anninhilating Rhythm... I could go on forever. All 1996+ tracks.

Im afraid Chiz i have to agree with Jye! Renegade Rewind kicked ass but there were still plenty of good HH trax afterwards.

ahh burnin love...fantastic tune!

and Drop it - ahhhh that was my fave for many years. "Hiiiiiiiggghhh" still pierces me to this day

For me kiddo... for me. I'm sure there's been stacks since that are "anthems" to the people who were going, but considering I sort of consider anything after 1995/96 to be new school... those HHC tunes that came after don't really qualify as anthems in my mind.

:D

Really? Sorry mate I was just going through my record box and my press says 1996. But I'm sure I can go on forever with a list of happyhard tracks that just went nuts from '96 onwards. '96 - '97 was an awesome few years for happyhard.

Haha, when i started partying Daydream was HHC king - 97/98. He was my favourite dj at the time. I loved his cheeeesy HHC sets. Bouncy tunes with awesome girly vocals! Does anyone remember that track "You and Me"? Ahhh man I loved that! What about "Miles of SMiles"? HAHA So cheesy

Then he disappeared for a couple of years (started his own label i think), but he did a one off comeback HHC set at a Scattered party in Penrith about 4 years ago. I had an essay due that sunday morning, but took a break from writing at 3am, drove to Penrith to make it for his 4am set and then went back home to finish my essay! It was well worth it. Dedication!

I remember thinking that I would never get over HHC and that it was the bestest thing EVER! How our states of mind change! Although i do still enjoy hearing some of those tracks after so many years.
