Hi old skoolers, young and old

interesting thought....how old are old skoolers?

that leads to the question, when did old skool become "old skool"?

PS....I am 40 something

25.. too young to have any "real" rave memories.. but i have the tapes passed down from an older sibling to pretend I was there! Sis used to come home and say.. "mannn you would have loooved this party". And I'd be like... ahhhhh shheeeettt. The closest I got to the scene was Pump at the Apia Club in 1995. haha. Not terribly oldskool, but you only need exposure to the music and you're hooked. hehe. Remember seeing Dye Witness live there tho. "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 wana do wada want all night"... no idea what he really says. LOL! Ahhh those were the days. I guess since I wasn't lucky enough to have made those real memories that's why my friends and I have started to revive our own oldskool scene. You guys should come to one of our parties some time. We try to get through as many absolute belters and classics each time.. whilst not forgetting the less common, but must play ones. Bit of Elephant Paw.. Space Party People.. Fun Tribe etc.

Maybe?!! Refresh my memory... do you spit or swallow??? ;D

I wish (like many of us I s'pose) that I'd really made the most of the first year I was "in". From Prodigy 4 came Mixed Beans 3, Freedom 2, and Happy Valley 3. I was hooked. By late '94/95 it was magic that was Sundaze sessions at Sydney Park. Truly special times.

From there it rapidly turned to crapola following too many 3 day benders, and loitering at the Pav 'til all hours on a Sunday eve. People I knew were using needles, a couple of them died (OD and suicide). It really opened my eyes to the worst - yet still some of the best - times of my life. the Yin and the Yang?

As happy hard errupted, I was outta there. House parties were a hit as they steered towards progressive and tribal. Then came more fun with parties at various homes (lowercase that is), amongst close friends, two crates and endless shelves of vinyl...

'Tis been a while now! ;D

Where where your haunts in that 1994 era? Like you said, we probably crossed paths... And who/what is "franger" from my download thread?

akashanelson
22-Apr-06, 11:39pm
ummmm....yuck!!!!! :-*

Franga was a dude!!! And he was also a senior advocate of the rave scene. He was also involved with the original Happy Valleys with Ming and Abel. He also threw the Mortuary recovery parties.... often verbally shewing away the police and protesting ravers rights etc, etc.

I guess I hit the scene the hardest through-out late 93 early 94... with most of the parties being shut down and moving into pubs and of course the Agincourt. I too experienced the loss of friends in the scene such as Dave D. and Arthur and I'm not even going to go near the whole needle thing (soooooo bad, some kicked it some I just have never seen again).

"The crossing paths", statement basically meant (in a friendly way) that I went to pretty much all the same events, including the Sydney park recoveries and the early Pav recoveries too. But during this time I was also going to the house events during the mid week like pink lint and Kinselas on Friday (after Cloud 9 folded).... by mid 95 I was completely burnt out and basically stuck to the underground house movement parties.

Taking almost a year off I slowly edged back into Sabotage, Love, Decadance etc.... but at much slower pace (this is not say I still didn't have some sketchy benders along the way)!!

... with all that aside I was just curious that we may have met or knew each other through the scene, but I must say your picture does not spark any memories, but that's not say we haven't met... those days/months and years are very hazy at best.

Yep, we must be one or two degrees apart (and I'll refrain from any more references to kinky rendezvous meet-ups or rubbery figures, and sorry, not sure if you misread my drift, yes, I too am curious to how close we've crossed paths). I was at the exactly same gigs, incl Arthurs "afterparty" at the Angincourt. Then onto Syd Park, Pav, and the house parties. My name's Phil, if that helps???

Oh, and Dilly Dally (http://www.inthemix.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=162564&page=5) is a far worse stirer than me. I like people to explore their matter of fact - and often controversial - statements. He's been only been banned 3 times in 6 months!

Anyway, If we (wife and I) were in your neck of the woods, it'd be great to meet up for a beer and I'm sure we'd eventually nail a particular moment in the universe when we met. :)

I love these old school threads! :thumb:
Great read!

Im not anywhere near as old school as any of you guys, but my passion for music started long before partying.

Im 23 now (24 soon) and my first party was when i was youngin at the age of 16. I have a lot of older friends who were all ravers back in the day, so my appreciation for old school music stems from them. Id hang out at their houses while they mixed and played all their anthems mix tapes, budds and stoo, jade, shade, akira etc etc. I loved the music before i had even experienced a party. They all went to the FODs, Prodigys, utopias, happy valleys and all, as you all did. I feel like ive missed out on so much. :(

First Rave was Utopia 6 at magic mountain(?) in a tent near liverpool somewhere. My earliest raving memories consist of Shade scratching and doing tricks to anthems. Gotta love the memories. Pure Gold ;D

Long since then, ive stopped going to raves. People evolve and change, as does the music.

First party was Prodigy Beehive, April 1994. Shit, it's scary to think that was 12 years ago! Haha at least it's not as bad as some of you :P I'd been to a few other events previously that had played techno (as it was all called back then) but Prodigy was the first one that really opened my mind to the brave new world. After that, it was on like Donkey Kong. Astral Flight, Mayday, Space Cadet, Alfebet Soup, Colossus, MDMA, Pleasuredome and on and on.

I couldn't believe how much it changed in a year though, I remember hearing Hardequencer play Dancing Nations and thinking this is the hardest shit that I've ever heard yet within a year all this hard as nails shit coming from Rotterdam was getting played and by mid 1995 happy hardcore really took off. It was such a shame as I really loved the music before then, but I took a liking fairly quickly to happy (still play it today lol) and it was on. I also remember thinking how much the scene had changed, especially when Here's Johnny went to #1. All of a sudden there were so many gronks at parties who were at raves because they were the cool place to be... It was never the same after that, the whole underground feeling and the feeling of being part of a new movement dissapeared... Or maybe that's when I first started getting a wee bit jaded hahaha...

Still in the Sydney rave scene as both a DJ and promoter, anyone who was in the scene back then would not even come close to recognising the rave scene of today. It's completely different in every aspect: Music, legality, venues, attitude and average age of the ravers etc etc... But most importantly it's still alive for whole new generations to experience/enjoy, and that bears testiment to the strength of rave.

Midian, that was my second party ever. Do you remember the beehive design thingy hanging from the centre of the ceiling of the warehouse? I also remember the sound bouncing off the giant metal rollerdoor at the back, the whole wall was vibrating and going whoomp, whoomp. I was experimenting with standing with one ear facing the stage and one facing the rollerdoor, so I was getting the delayed bounce of sound between the two. Those were acid days, unreal. I think that rave was the first time I heard Nik Fish.

I had an absolutely MAD time @ Prodigy 5 Beehive. :offchops:

Great music, great sound, great vibe. Loved it.

Then had to face the relatives, maybe Easter Monday(?), where the easter egg chocolate was burning against the rawness on the top of my mouth, all the while being interrogated by family re what goes down at "rages" having seen the media hype that Easter weekend.

And did anyone else think...

Prodigy 5... Beehive

..and then,

Anyway, fond memories.

I'm 30 in September this year.. urrrr.. held on to those 20s as hard as I could for as long as I could, but alas.. time shall weary me.

Went to my first techno clubs here in the west in '92, before going to my first rave at the end of that year.

Rinsed it hard in clubs and raves until 1997 when I decided I'd had enough.

i'm not oldskool cos i only started in 97 (but have long since finished :P) and am (only?!?) 27 but got into the historical side of things when i was going to uni with the brothers and cousins of the buck rogers ravers- subsequently became good friends with guys like blocka and john koumo (if any of you guys know them??). then met another older crew through my now ex girlfriend.., ended up building a pretty good knowledge of it all and a pretty extensive music collection by spending many hours hunting through second hand shops, dubbing tapes and buying up records when guys like vic and mark dynamix started selling theirs...,

anyway what i want to know is how you guys cope with aging- because frankly, the thought of turning 30 terrifies me :|

Nope. That was only what we dubbed it as before it was even announced. Pretty funny though.

If my memory serves me well, it was NYE'95 and was given the name Prodigy 6 - Rave Paragon, or something like that. It was held in a massive warehouse around Rosehill Racecourse, getting off the train at Clyde. Seemed like the venue was too big, the stage off-centre, with large curtains trying to sections to make it work better. I think Southend and/or Vision4/5 played that night too.

The older I get, the more I realise how little I change. Hitting 30 was the same me that hit 25 half-a-decade earlier. Same memories, only some more great experiences under my belt.

So pretty much, it's the same "me" the whole time, so all's good...

My First big rave was Colossus at Homebush (I started Raving late compared to others I hung out with and knew) Had been to a few smaller ones before that. My Brother, 8 Years younger than me was an old Schooler from the Ziggurat days.

I no longer Rave. Got out of the scene just after I met my wife. As for how do I cope with getting old? Well to me it's all good. I have my memories and the music still.

A few of my fondest memories are the rave in the old Allen's Factory on Gardiners Rd? Got closed down after about an hour and everyone ended up in Sydney park. No Music at the start except what came out of the cars in the Car Park.
Another was the rave in the old Wheat Cylos near Pyrmont.

I have many many more fond memories.

Was anyone else at these two?

Was going to say, Space Cadet 33 1/3, but I think that was Botany Road, and I can't recall exactly where it ended up, but I remember one morning hitting up the tail end of a Vibe Tribe gig at Sydney Park. Damn these memories arre hazy!

If I recall, the beginning of Sydney Park's Sundaze, was following a gig at the Crystal Palace, Broadway, with a few car stereos into the sunrise. The next week, it was generator and decks and the legend was born. People dancing on rickety brick stacks. Not sure how often it was used before that.

I did a huge mid-life crisis at 30 and don't think I will be going through anything like that again. Back then I was in a rotten relationship, with friends I couldn't trust. Made some changes there, find myself in a different place now. I'm soo much more self confident.

Also waaaay too many times spent at the underground. Those definately were the days *sigh*

I think Southend and/or Vision4/5 played that night too.I had the most incredible NYE of my life at that party. So it's interesting to hear other people's memories of it don't concur.

I remember I got off the train at Clyde and the train station attendant looked at me and said "Tell me you're not going to the same party as all those weird people" and I said "Yup."

I don't remember Southend being there, but definitely Vision 4/5 - they played that "Everything You Need" song and did quite an interesting show with a screen projection up the back that had visuals, like flames coming out where the guys' hands were. (Yes, I was on acid at the time, but yes, this was really happening.)

I was still somewhat tripping when the sun came up and when I walked outside with my friend we looked at all the cars parked in the street and thought they were completely smashed up.

Yeah, that's cool. :) And fair enough, it was a party with a grand-scale production and acts...

...plus it went all night too, uninterrupted! :thumb:

Yeah, it is interesting how: different people, different verdicts. It's so hard to remain objective and not let the emotions (good/bad/indifferent) cloud the experience. Only *you* know how it was for *you*!

It was the end of 95, wasn't it, or was it end of 94? Either way, a very messy - though unforgettably fun - couple of years, and perhaps I just needed time out to let the friends, music, and myself develop into something new, fresh, different.

And when the weekends were starting 5pm Friday and finishing midnight Sundays, week in, week out during that era, it would have taken a pretty special NYE to get a full grasp of my undivided attention.

Anyway, still had fun, and certainly enough fun to grab my obligatory Tropical Gatorade in the 500ml bottle from the servo the other side of the walkway bridge the next morning. :)

All this old-skool talk has had many feelings of "back then" come flooding in. Such good trip* back.

*cheap tricks!! You take 'em, you will die, ok?!!

So desperate to see what tapes are tucked away. I know there's a hefty shopping bag's worth.

Got the feeling my "Wicked - Paul Holden" tape - my first - may have regrettably disappeared along the way.

Still hanging to hear some mid-90s German-esque trance, ala HiShock stylee again.

Hey, cheers for that.

Threw me when I read he got started in 1996 (typo - should read 1986, I'm sure).

The "flyer" section is pretty neat, including links to various scans of the orginal flyers.

Just gotta work out the tape ordering system... no links? Can't see 'em in the shop? Need to get out more?

Thanks for the link. :)

Then, I guess you've got to send him an email with the name of the mix you want. I've been tempted, but aud20+ for an unlicensed demo is too steep for me.

Mr HiShock if you visit ITM, the pre 96 stuff should be hosted here (esp the Totem mixes)

25.. too young to have any "real" rave memories.. but i have the tapes passed down from an older sibling to pretend I was there!

Yeah im 26 and fall in the same category! wish i could have been there with you guys! have some older mates who tell stories damn it would have beed good. but the music and the feelings live on!

Im 32
First party i went to was Life (I think) at the Dome.
Went to most of the prodigy parties Awesome..except the last one
Phycosis parties
anything by the welsh embasy, A+A, Raving Butterfly
Dave Kirkpatrick always threw mad parties
Quite Earth
Flim Flam
Mixed Beans
Charlie and the chocolate factory
Happy Valley 1+2+3
Sweet Science (My mate asked his missus to mary him)
Bounce at the Tom Tom club ..turned into the underground
Lenny Dee at Bounce..holy shit there was only about 20 people there but he played one of the most
amazing sets ive ever seen.
the Eden Parties were heaps of fun
I remember the first one had a massive snake you could run around inside of
A jumpy castle and this weird maze made out of skewers and balls of clay
(got lost in there for a while, nothing to do with blurry vision)
Ov the Earth Tribe Parties
Carnival of the mind
Amageddon... Carl Cox 3 deck mind blowing madness in a whare house that was litterally falling down around us from the BASS
Mayday 1+2
Midnight maddness
Pure
Space cadet parties were fun, one in particular, where the warehouse only had a half a roof
so they had 44 gallon drums all blazed up to keep us from freezing our asses off.
Buck rogers ravers they wernt to badd.
Smurf Villiage.
Yippie Kai yay Mother fucker...was fun except for the stairs
Star Wars
MDMA
Field of Dreams
The infamous Graffitti Hall of fame (RIP) recoverys and sitting under the E Tree
In the public school across the road

I also spent a year in Perth when I was 17 and ran into some seriously sick Raves
cant remember the names of... Telepathy was one of em.
I remember the flyer was just a hand drawn foto copy type of affair
with a map on the back..
turned out to be one of the sickest parties ever. Massive wharehouse rammed,
Huge walls of speakers, massive lighting rig, and they had built this huge wooden Pyramid
right in the middle of the dancefloor you could climb up and dance on.
Coppers were there all night but didnt shut it down till about 6-7 in the mornin
10 bux on the door..
(what ever happened to prices like that)

I could go on but its late

anyway
i had a misspent youth and proud of it

Crikeys....here we go!

My first big dance party was the Rat party which Grace Jones played at on NYE 1988 - I was 17.

My first rave was probably around 1990. Does anyone out there remember the "Whole of the moon" or "Hole in the Moon" party which was put on by some crazy poms out near Windsor Rd? It was about 6 months before Happy Valley 1.

Happy Valley 1 was insane. Anyone who was there was involved in a magical piece of history. We need to try an preserve the tales and photos etc etc. I still have much of the music on vinyl and even more on tape - but I don't have any photos. Please - if anyone has any photos - please share what you have.

Other parties that should also be mentioned include Tribal II out at Glenworth Valley way - this was an awesome party, firmly etched into my mind.....I have vivid memories of the sun rising and that track Mayday, mayday, mayday, mayday going off. People just going absoultely bonkers! I can even remember names and faces of people I haven't seen for over a decade......

Anyone remember Sweet Science out in some semi-rural area inside a giant air filled greenhouse?? It was cold - but a great night.

All the Alexandria, Mascot and Botany parties are now all a big blur - but Sweet Science, Tribal, Mixed Beans, Welsh Embassy, the SUB parties by Sudeep, the Mike Jay parties - Ov thee earth tribe etc were just sick.....the wheat silos at Glebe Island were unbelievable. I saw ELVIS there!!!!

O'Malleys on Sunday mornings were also most important back then....I actually used to DJ in the early days there......anyone remember me? My name is Raff. I also used to play in a two-man techno outfit at some raves - Tribal, Sub, PUNOS. We were called DIAS. If anyone remembers - please drop me a line!

I could go on forever.....but this is already getting a tad long!

Ahhh......great days they were......

Cheers,
Raff

Most memorable parties for me where Armageddon @ Hordern, Step Back 1 & 2 @ Alexandria, Summer 1 & 2 @ Alexandria, Beyond @ Homebush, most Saturday nights at DCM in 1990. When I think about it there are too many to list.. I kept clubbing right up to 1999, even got to go to Pacha to see David Morales and Carl Cox in Ibiza 1998. I still love the tunes and have decks setup in the garage and 13 crates of tunes.. It gets a little hard to get on em' though with 3 kids and a wife to keep entertained.

I'm 31, started clubbing at 16 (well technically was still 15), so that would be 1990. Thats when i also went to my first rave, rather hazy as to what the actual event was. just a natural progression from me loving 80's pop dance. HAven't looked back since ;)

Probably the first dance party as such I went to was a RAT party in late 1988, or early 1989, in Brisbane. Unfortunately it was a failure - Brisbane just wasn't ready for it.

I had been clubbing since 1981 at that point - it was so different to what it all became....

There were gay parties I went to in the 1980s, but they were primarily focussed on what would now be called commercial dance.

With long periods of being into completely different scenes, I have been back into the dance scene since the late 1990s. I am 42 (Remarkably, given my history, I dont quite look it).

I'm 31. First really got into the rave scene in 93 when I was 18 when I moved to the UK. I never really paid any attention to flyers, what it was called or where we were going. i lived in beaconsfield for a while and used to go to some dancehall about 45 mins away somewhere which got converted to a rave most weekends with about 2000 ppl. I remember lots of outdoor raves... bought a tape set from a universal gig. Then I moved to London and went to various very dodgy underground clubs. There used to be one in Wandsworth I went to a lot until too many ppl got shot and it was shut down. Laserdome in crystal palace (I think) was also pretty dodgy. Then I stepped out of the scene completely for a few years and survived on pirate radio stations (kissfm before it become proper like!). I returned to Perth and after a while got back into the scene with a passion and started learning who the Dj's were and the new genres that had emerged and going back and rediscovering the names of old skool tunes that I had lost. Now I have my decks at home and a healthy vinyl addiction. The last 3 clubbing yrs have been the best years of my life. I definately love it more now than when I was younger. Music is my first love it will always be my last! I would love to run a radio station or a club but am currently completing a law degree and would love to combine this with my passion for music/dancing/entertainment somehow.
thanks for listening!

Hi my name is Rob, I'm 33 this year and I'm a reformed raver ;D

My first rave was Ov Thee Earth Tribe by Tribal and Virtual Bass. Hit the parties pretty hard in 1993. Welcome 93 at the State Sports Centre (Felix!), Birth down at 77 William Street, Chaos at the corner of O'Riorden St and Botany Road, Tribal's First Birthday (the hardcore room was two shipping containers end on), Carnival Ov Thee Mind in the everleigh railway yards, Vic on the Park on Sundays, the Prodigy parties, the Grafitti Hall of Fame (R.I.P), Mixed Beans, freedom 2 at Darling Harbour (with DJ Edge playing trumpet in the crowd!), Pure (with those interesting flyers). I'm surprised I can remember that much! Started throwing parties easter of 1994, and it all went a bit haywire from there ...

I'm rambling again. Sorry.

Ecky Thump, maybe?

Never been to this venue. Think it was used in the real early rave days ('91/'92?) also.

Oh man you are bringing back some great memories!

I'm 27, and my first rave was Pleasuredome 1994. Another rave that had a major effect on me was Field of Dreams 3, at the Alexandria Basketball Stadium - so much so I bought a house a few streets away and I take my dog for walks to the stadium. It's a place that hold some found memories...

Ecky Thump in 1995 was wicked. I went to the first 2 down at the silos in Balmain - every time I drive past now I get a huge grin on my head and one day I'd like to live in one of those big old houses in Glebe that over looks the silos so I can remember those nights every time I look out my window. What an adventure they were! I believe the original party in the silos was called Eon.

Anyone used to go to the Hardcore Cafe?

(Zippy and Mark u rocked even if I couldn't understand you). Best rave venue: 'Bourke St' and 'Mascot'. I rmember Welcome something or other and Happy Valley (all of them) the best. 23, Oldskool at heart

Began listening to the proper stuff after years of taping commercial dance that I dug off the radio. I just happened to hear what i've been told was the first ever JJJ mixup and I was all of a sudden obsessed with finding more of this space-age music with bizzare sounds and manic, high speed drums.

A friend of mine also in yr.7 at school had an older sister who had returned from living in Sydney with a swag of mixtapes which I was overjoyed to get my hands on. Loads of Vagas, Ultrasonic, Paul Holden, Nik Fish, Peewee and some mysterious german trancey ones.

The sounds on these tapes defined my music tastes ever since.

First rave was Atomic NRG in 2001, bleaurgh!

I just read all your stories guys. There are some awesome experiences and wikid memories out there! LOVES IT! Can't wait to read more. Anyways heres mine...
I'm 27. Back in '96 I was working my ass off flipping burgers at Hinchinbrook Maccas while my mates were going hard at parties.
So they had finally convinced me and they told me about this party that was coming up and I couldn't miss it no matter what! So I told work I wasn't available July 6th and 7th and I got me some tickets to Field of Dreams 4.
Man what a crazy first party. We were dropped off in a van but there was still another van full of us to come so the driver had to go back to Livo to get my friends. So a bunch of us just waited outside the front entrance amongst the fairy lights for about an hour. I could hear the bass it sounded wikid! I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. Awesome night.
One of my favourite memories from the night was when the laser girl came out and when she pointed the lasers out to the crowd and the laser went over our heads the bass got louder. I have no idea how they did that.
Anyways from that day on I never worked a w/end again and just went hard '96 - '97 there was always something advertised in 3d world.
I just moved out to Campbelltown 3 or 4 months ago with my g'f of the time. And after a hard days work coming back from the city on the train and passing Minto's Cenntenial Basketball stadium always puts a smile on my face.

Went to a party at the Wheat Silos in about 92/93, "Of The Earth Tribe" which was a collaboration with the Tribal guys and the Of the Earth Core team. Kind of warped venue but added to the madness that was.

I suspect my clubbing family is the oldest you'll see out and about clubbing in Sydney, we range from mid 20's to mid 40's. The lady who's 46, well if you saw her you'd think she was in her 30's.

I'm often told I don't look my age either, not sure sometimes whether that's the truth or whether it's just 18 year old gurners at 5am in the morning, overloaded on e and excess testosterone flattering my ego, but seriously, I get very tired of being chased around the dancefloor by boys when I'm literally old enough to be their mother! And I tell them so too!

We all still feel pretty confortable being out there on the dancefloor though, don't let anyone else make you feel any different when the time comes.

I might not still be there in 5 years, but I still will be for the next couple of years, for sure.

i cannot belive age should b an issue in a conversation about raves. i mean every single rave i went to allways had freaks of all ages,,,,
the 30-40yr old coke`ed out orginiseres,
that at least 50 year old guy in the full military uniform blowing his whistle dancing like a marching band kinda thing,
the 15 year old stupid enuff to belive he wus invincible, (me)
and the 18-20 crew trendsetters , air max , kepper , melbourne shuffle( yes we did it in sydney thank u very much...),

anyway what i guess im feeling , is that raves as i knew them where about dissolving boundries of age and social prejiduce. With a little splash of chemical help(for some of us) and a big serving of choonz dished up with a garnish of parody, this was widley achived.

also, the vibe in clubs is still the same.and its not one i have ever enjoyed.

Probably was at hyperbass with you Fuzi. (Saw New Order play in the other shed there some years before too - awesome gig!) I'm 43 now... or as I like to put it, celebrating the 13th anniversary of my 30th birthday. At work at the moment, listening to some classic Weirdo from 2000 mixed by Capt'n TinRib! Might see you @ Family fri nite!

30. Got into it during my yr 11-yr 12 days- But really hit it hard during Happy hardcore days of Paul Holden & Nick Fish..Chris Fresh.. Mine naive easily impressed ears to the 3 turntables of DJ Angus.. all time fav tracks like Intermission 6 Days, Starwash Disco Fans and Moby Next is the E.. Lotsa happy vibes and the drugs were so people could keep up to dem 150+ BPMs.. as opposed to these days where I ponder why anyone needs drugs to dance to 123bpm..

Awwww... such a baby!

And you know I love you anyway. ;)

Yeah, for the new generations, there's plenty of varying styles (fads?) of yesteryear to explore.

Give it another couple of years or so and even elektrohaus will be oldskool.
