Wow. I am so excited. And shocked.

Our national broadcaster, ABC TV, has decided to make Tuesday nights worth watching. Starting next week at 10pm, we have a showsimply titled 'Set!' featuring a live set from some of the new and old faces of Australian experimental music. It is being broadcast in triplets - three weeks at a time, then a break.

The first show, on May 2, kicks of with an hour of The Necks. May 9 has 20 year old Melbournian Francis Plagne, then Anthony Pateras on May 16. Later in the year they have Oren Ambarchi, Splinter Orchestra, and many more.

Info on the first show - http://www.abc.net.au/tv/guide/netw/200605/programs/AC0534H001D2052006T220000.htm

Set the PVRs to stun.

so did many people watch the 3 shows? I missed the first one, burt was the 2nd two. Very impro stuff. (Like much of Fabrique in Brisbane for those who are here).

So what's your take on the whole impro thing? I find some of it can be very inaccessible, with the performers gettign off on it much more than the audience. I experienced that with one of these shows, but cant recall which now (i shouold have posted this weeks ago).

Whne it falls down, IMO, is when the various parts do not synthesise well. It is very hard to improvise well as a group. At times I thought there was too little integration to create something greater than the parts.

Wondering what others' experience was?

As with most things experimental, I loved some performances and some didn't do much for me.

I really enjoyed the Francis Plagne performance, and some of the Pateras ones (the Pateras/Fox one was amazing; the improv group one i didnt dig)

The Necks were The Necks; I enjoyed it enough but y'know...

have heard interesting things about some of the later episodes... particularly the more ph
