View Full Version : World Music - What turns you on?!

Well ... thread title says it all really.
So much music is based on western 4/4 rhythms and tonal scales etc etc.
Well how about those that do not ...
I must admit i'm rather partial to a few raga's on a sitar and tabla and a touch of hindi vocals ... but please, if it gets anything near bollywoodish or pop orientated it gets very bad very quickly.
I might also throw ska/dub/dancehall in there too ... quite particular to its island origins ... the whol thing is about the acent on the 3rd beat of the bar ... 95% of western music has it on the 2nd and 4th .... even white man reggae ;)
oh and let's not forget what our own continent has to offer ... the didjereedoo !!

funkedub if you like tabla you should definately check out Tabla Beat Science. Rocks way hard. Ravi Shankar ftw on sitar.
I have a few didjeridu cd's but I never listen to them coz anytime I wanna hear didj I just sit in the hallway and bust out my own rhythms ;)
Seems like there is heaps of good reggae/dancehall/roots/dub going round atm. Just picked up a Cornerstone Roots album and its way cool. Keen to get the new(ish) Fat Freddy's Drop album too.

got a few old realworld cds, including one that has the grid doing a very cool lil tune involving some sampled beats and a latin guitar that goes from nylon string sounding through to wahwahed distorted guitar...gives me grooves to hear it
definitely no diss to funkdub for starting this thread, but i have to say i find the whole concept of 'world' music a bit indiscriminate. all the music i'm into comes from everywhere - chinese punk bands, french beat scientists, jamaican dub, south american hip hop and norwegian jazz, not to mention the standards. i reckon the idea of 'world' music being something that stands alone is a bit out of date and far more cringe-worthy than the awkward moniker idm.

it's semiotics really
can you think of a better term ?

i agree with what you're saying, matt, but it's splitting hairs. world music is just another genre name, it doesn't have to be taken in its literal meaning.
:)
yeah it is semiotics, but that shouldn't undermine the argument. words should be used to pinpoint and clarify meaning rather than dilute: world separates mainstream western music (hip hop, techno, indie, pop, jazz, etc) from everything else (world). it's only really useful if you aren't particularly interested in the specific music - because how can you really lump reggae, calypso or batacada with tibetan folk music or indian ragas? these things are as different from each other as anything else.
btw i'm totally into DJ Delores from Brasil, the Tropicalia compilation on Soul Jazz and the punk band Subs from China...

yeah it is semiotics...Sorry to be anal guys but since we're on the topic...
I think the word you are referring to is semantics - the study of words and their meanings.
Semiotics is about meaning in signs and symbols. Apparently Umberto Eco is a professor of semiotics at the University of Udine. Nice city btw, Pink Floyd played there once at the football stadium.
but yeah, I do agree that "world" is just a bit vague. Perhaps though for the purposes of this forum its not a bad idea to lump it into a single thread because it IS so varied?
Anyone into Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan???
Sorry to be anal guys but since we're on the topic...
ha ha yeah! i'm too busy editing a magazine to pay attention to such things. ;)

Shahen-Shah (RW3) was my first exposure, pure vocal fireworks..

Yay! Music that isn't from America! :D
I definitely enjoy sampling all kinds of sounds from around the world. Haven't really got a favourite, but I'm quite partial to the Central Asian sounds, and the whole Afro-Cuban whatever, and the European Jazz Thing, and well... you know what I mean. Big it up. :)
It's 2006, and I don't have time for formulaic, marketed music!

Music I like that isn't 4/4 = flamenco
i've just discovered mulatu astatke in the last couple of weeks; crazy laid back ethiopian jazz muso.
he's got a couple of tracks on the broken flowers soundtrack, but the real gem is his album, ethiopiques 4: ethio jazz & musique instrumentale. if you've seen broken flowers you'll instantly recognize the track yekermo sew.
awesome stuff. checka-checkit.

Have a listen to the Jolly Mukherjee Orchestra as well; he's the guy behind many of Indian cinema's most famous arrangements; also a lot of other classic Indian / subcontinental stuff. There was a darned good remix collection awhile back through Palm Pictures (I think) called 'Fusebox' - def. worth checking.
Yes; Tabla Beat Science is not bad at all. I heard Laswell was looking at doing a live DVD of the Berkeley concert last years as well. Bill Laswell's Innerhythmic label is always worth checking out...
Anyone here ever listen to Suba?
zurya drum collaboration - BALI
these guys are melting my head. *tears* of joy.

Some of the Tru Thoughts stuff, particularly TM Juke and Deisler, do the cross over thing quite well.
Adrian Sherwood mixes dubby sounds with all kinds of other influences, and how could you not like an album called "Never trust a hippy"?
On a vaguely related note, can anyone tell me what happened to sydney band entropic?
Oh yes so love "world music"
One of the great things about Adelaide (and theres not many) is that we have Womadelaide. It really is awesome. Basically people froma ll walks of life come to hear awesome world sounds in the botanical gardens it's brilliant.
Last year my biggest was the allstar jam. Led by the dhol intentions it was a massive mash up of all types opf sounds, Latin, Gamelan, African, Arabic and sub continental, Western etc. Was awesome.
Wow, a big question;
I'll go for a large helping of Jamaican music with some African Hip Hop on the side. Then the next day I could handle Tech from Detroit and Europe. It's all 4/4 tho'.
The most boundary-less group I came across was 'Suns of Arka' who've been going for ages. Based in England but record in India, heavy use of electronics and sitar.

Anyone into Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan???
Jeff Buckley really loved him
I am moving into gypsy music atm esp Electric Gypsie Land, The Amsterdam Klezmer Band...
THere are a few radio shows in Bris for this sort of thing:
Ric does a couple of World music shows in Bris, on a Sun arvo, 4ZzZ and another mid week show on a commercial station.
I want to infuse some warm insrtumentation into some experimental smudge. With a lyricism akin to borroughs scattered though... and then there would have to be some soprano moments blended in ever so quietly..
As a bit of a laugh and as an experiment I sang opera through the didge at the Powerhouse theatre here in bris a couple of times.. i think that it would be great if it had some effects through it.. a bit off topic.. but well, you get that.

karsh kale has some nice solo stuff too
gotta a bit of gorgoues gypsy stuff too <3 to balkan crazies!!!
look out for kiril's (http://www.kiril.com.mk) older stuff...(balkan spy etc) what an awesome guy and his music could melt me on spot!
the sweetheart gave me a pile of macedonia fusion cds ontop of his stuff when i visited and some really treasures from over there...
I also picked up this album in Brazil by sum Otto guy.
the album is quite ecclectic overall, but only a few songs stood out at the end of the day.
track 8 (D1) is lovely gem Andre Abujamra - O Celular de Naná [Abu Mix]
six degrees records (http://www.sixdegreesrecords.com/) is a nice place to shop! ;)
at the end of the day... middle eastern fusion is my weaknes!
there was this one track called Izgrala -(by Lumin) (http://www.sixdegreesrecords.com/catalog.php?upc=657036108929) (track3) i would have on high rotation on my mp3 when i lived in istanbul, as the music has a kinda mixed slowing down/speeding up elements interwoven into ts fabric, watchin the world outside during bus trips work in perfect sync to these sounds made for great visual memories that are now permanatly attached to this tune. (azerbaijan roots)
would really loveto hear of any sufi inspired fusion out there too if anyone knows of any to recommend???
smtg that sounds like broken beat mixes of mercan dede would be tre awesome!

Trans Global Underground i have now had the pleasure of seeing twice in my life and are my fav live band!!! Those DRUMMERS!!!! the gig in melbs 3 days after sept 11 was the most uplifting experience on mass and was the strongest support for proving the positive power of music in all its glory!
a pic i took of the tre cool sitar player from their gig in bris 02?

imo, Mulatu of Ethiopia is a classic LP, damn hes smooth on those vibes, anyone with a spare og vinyl copy, get at me!
There was def a thriving scene in Ethiopia in the 70's, sometimes a little vocal heavy for me, but awesome stuff none the less...
