I'm doing a bit of reseach on the use of talcum powder for dancing. I'm in Melbourne and it's very popular here - probably because of the style of dance we do over here, but i'm just wondering if anyone uses talk for dancing in other states.

Do you use it? have you seen it used in Adelaide? If so, at clubs or parties or both?

thanks in advance,

matt :-)

Paul and I have been Clubbing in 3 States and the strange people of Melbourne are the only ones to do it so far.

I have seen one person do it in Adelaide, must have been on holidays from Victoria. :) :)

I can confirm talcum powder sightings are on the increase in Adelaide! :-0

Nowhere near as many people as in Melbourne, but I'm seeing it more & more.

In Melbourne they have a way of dancing known as the "Melbourne Shuffle".
Talcum is used on the floor to make moving your feet easier without lifting them off the floor...kinda
Anyway, some people prefer using talcum powder as it aids movement.

isnt that dangerous.. especially in a club where it becomes a liability?? Vee xo

I was in Melbourne for HW19 and had a laugh at the 'no talc' next to 'no drugs' warning notices as you entered... seems no one must have read the warnings... :P

Yeah, the talc thing is very popular in Melbourne, I see as more of a rave/party thing than club thing... Think there needs to be a certain intensity in music involved as well... eg: harder/faster sounds... I never saw it in Adelaide while I was there, and it's rare in Sydney... altho the big raves could be fulll of rave kids doing the talc thang... who knows...

I hate the stuff... gets all over your music gear, records, equipment... PA hire companies must hate the stuff too, no doubt having to clean the talc dust out of speakers, amps etc...

Are people allowed to put talc on the dance floor in clubs? It must be a real pain to clean up for the venue :(

i have a mate who lived in adelaide from 94-97 and he said there was plenty of talc use back then.

i've never seen it in sydney or perth, though on horrible sticky floors i've seen water used to just as good effect (including by me at some crazy d'n'b gig at the old palladium in sydney).

No way... between 94 and 97 I must have run 15-25 shows in Adelaide and not once did I see TALC at any of these!

I have been in the industry in Adelaide from 1992 to 2000 and I have seen TALC used once... or maybe twice!

I've seen it used once at Fabric (The Loft). It shit me right off as I was slippin and slidin everywhere.. that, and the fact other people were going c*nt up on it as well.
It should be banned... nightclubs are liable for those sorts of things aren't they?
Mind you... for some people it would improve their dancing! **cough** you know who you are **cough** :P

The deepfunk boys in the UK seem to like their talc.

By deepfunk, I'm talkin' real 60s 70s dirty funk 45s, not some house producer who claims to be funky.

Water on dance floors is just a bit crazy. I was showing off some new trainers a while ago and the dance floor was wet. I quickly learned they had little grip and felt like I was ice skating

Quite a buzz actually ;)

Fantastic. this is the sort of info I'm after. thanks team. Keep those responses coming...

Meanwhile, I have to admit that I'm a bit of a fan of talc myself. I fully understand the arguments for and against, but it comes down to this. The way I dance (like it or hate it) I find it easier to dance on a surface that has a bit of slide. Talc does that.

In fact we had an ITM block party a year or so ago in Sydney and the dance floor was on the road. we laid down half a family size bottle of talc on the road and you would not believe the difference it made. It was like dancing on polished floor boards!! go figure.

On the flip side however, the road was never the same for months afterwards! Every time it rained, the area that had been talced would dry instantly!

More stories please :-)

their is a club named Hard Kandy in melb that provides talcum powder for all the party kids in bowls along the dance floor .

the only reason for this is becouse of the music played their and the way ppl dance to it.

i personally think talc is a good idea in the right atmosphere but over use of the product can be annoying!!!

Having DJ'd in Melbourne for the last 2 years I can safely say that I fucks me off having to clean my records every monday.

That crap gets everywhere, I know Bass Station has just moved to ZOS and the owners are going apeshit over it as it is getting into their band new multi million dollar sound and lights. They are now going to sell shoe pads that let you slip and slide everywhere just like talc, they just stick onto the bottom of your shoes and hey presto !!

Hard Kandy love it, and at Gatecrasher parties, its everywhere, as well as Bubble, but otherwise its only refined to Hard House / Trance clubs / events.

I have seen it in Adelaide about 4 - 5 years ago and was wondering what they where doing, so asked them and the said they where from Melbourne for the weekend, so I guess its not an Adelaide thing at all, except for those peeps from Adelaide who go to melbourne and then come back with the idea?

Hrm, i should try this talc thing. I've seen it in melbourne, but havent tried it, is it hard to get off the floor? Ie. want to try it in the safety of my own home before being laughed at in a club :|

18-Jun-02, 12:11pm
dude, in answer to your question... yes! it's very hard to get off the floor. it also gets in your equipment and isn't very good for it. that's why it's a bit of a love hate relationship./ Most parties in Melbourne try to ban its use, but people sneak it in.

Before you go spreading it all ovedr your floor, I'd think twice!

Maybe do it in your garage or in the driveway or something!

Naked
18-Jun-02, 10:13pm
thanks man, so would it be effective on a road? ie. i could do it in the middle of the night when the neighbours are asleep (i live in flats).

techboy
19-Jun-02, 10:44am
actually, it does amazing things to roads!! We had a street party when I was living in Sydney and the dance floor was on bitumen. We sprayed out a big square of talc on the road and it made it a much friendlier surface to dance on. Just took some of the stick out of it all.

I should also say that 6 months later, having endured tropical rain falls and daily road traffic, the talc was still visible on the road!

I think we don't see more of it here, because when someone does use it everyone gives them shit because: "only tossers use talc" (copyright) ;)

I first saw it in adelaide about 3-4 years ago and I still do see/smell it at raves a few times a year. I think the first time I noticed it was at Ed Rush and Optical (the same night as the rooftop party).

It's a pretty rude thing to do unless you are in a corner with no one else around. Most stupid thing I've seen was some dudes putting it on the carpet at UW @ planet! :tripping:

It's about as pathetic and tryhardy as using a pacifier... :meh:

Who cares, do what ever you want, it's called having fun so basicly get over it. talking from the point of view of someone who, when out having a good time, thinks their dancing in melb when i live in adel..(if you know me you'll already know that) i know the person who was putting the talc and Phil K and Nubreed, and i was one of the many people who enjoyed having a dance on it..

But We can help the odd few that, when off tap, can tell what carpet is and there for still ask why their feet still stick... don't blame the talc, blame the fact that the person is having too much fun, my be more fun then you, to care where the talcs going.. and if you can blame them for that then stop spilling your drinks on the dance floor in the fisrt place.

Also to answer the very first person "but i'm just wondering if anyone uses talk(talc) for dancing in other states.

Ewwww, hit a nerve did we yancey? :D

Sure anyone should be able to do whatever they feel like doing, but that's as long as it doesn't annoy the majority of people around them (like smoking when it's too crowded). So in some situations it would be fine, but other times it just annoys a lot of people. It stinks, it would annoy me less if it had a smell that didn't remind me of babies!

It does depend on the style of the music and the vibe of the night too I guess.

So it's actually to dry out the floor after drinks are spilled? I would have thought that would just turn to dough on your shoes?

actually it is more slippery when in contact with water. There are signs in most nursing home and some hospital bathrooms warning against the use of talc as it makes the tiles very slippery.

01-Jul-02, 02:36pm
Yeah not a fan, thing is if they'd at least stay in the one spot the entire night and not move and put down more in other parts of the club....at the first night of fabric @skylab I was very tempted to grab the talc bottle the girl (same one doing it at nubreed vs Phil K) had put on the front of the DJ booth for a bit while she was dancing....it would have been promptly put in the bin. Thing is she put it in several places around the DJ depending on where she was dancing and I nearly fell a few times because of it. :meh: And one bit where she put it was also being used as a walk way to get to the area behind the DJ.

Each to their own but not when it comes to making things unsafe or annoying for others.

Ditto for drunk/drugged idiots dancing whilst waving around their cigarettes and drinks in glasses! The number of times I've been happily dancing away in my own little sapce, and had the rude interruption of being burnt on my clothes or my skin by someone who didn't even notice! X( X( X(

I dunno, in a time when some places in sydney won't allow girls to wear open toed shoes (most palces here only have that rule for guys) for fear of being liable when someone cuts themselves on broken glass - how long till someone injures themselves on slippery talc and decides to make a fuss???
:-O

i can see the pros and cons for the use of talc...

for me, it's talc all the way esp at a dnb event where you get some serious booty shakin' happening.

On the dancefloor it's also a kind of 'bonding' thang... sharing the moment... when the tunes are cranking and the talc comes out you know the vibe is pretty good!

i thought it quite amusing to be asked if I was from melbs a couple of months ago, coz i was the only one dancing on talc. bring it on I say, but in moderation, coz too much is a pain!

This particular forum thread just came up in conversation at a meeting I was at with the guy that invented Stomp Pads (see www.stomppads.com.au)

I'll get him to have a look in on this thread as he might be able to add some interesting perspectives.

In the mean time, he's interested in hearing from any venue owners/operators who don't like Talc in their clubs but have non-slippery surfaces to dance on. If you fit the bill, please let him know by posting on this thread.

Hey people

After meeting with Techboy he told me about the war in Adelaide over talc..

I been dancing now in Melbourne for 3 years, (mind you I'm only 21, before you old scholars have a go). ;) When I first started trying to bust a move on the dance floor the use of talc would of been totally out of the question. As my dancing improved I wanted to try out new moves and styles.

So I tried out talcum powder, once I gained control I realised. That used in moderation the use of talc was fantastic it helps you to spin, slide and shuffle with ease. It relieves Stress on your ankles to your lower back.

As clubbing and dancing at raves is done in causal footwear, non-dancing shoes talcum powder was the answer for me.

Talcum powder is now band by most club owners/managers around Melbourne due to the amount of damage it has caused to sound, lighting, electrical and air-conditioning systems. DJ's wanted a band on the talc also.

What was Melbourne to do??

The answer Stomp Pads.. see (stomppads.com.au)

Stomp is only new to Melbourne but already Clubs are loving the idea. It's the answer to there talcum powder problems. We have been selling Stomp Pads at most of the major events and have had a lot of positive feed back..
After dancing on Stomp Pads now for the last year, I can honestly say with out them I don't dance as fluently and for long periods of time.

So Adelaide talc haters give it a go and try 3 things.
-Try some new moves/ styles
-Try using your feet more often
-Try talcum powder why you still can..

Happy and safe parting people
Supps..;) ;) ;)

I am anti- Talc. Thursday night at Chem Karim played that night no wonder the dance floor was packed and everyone could keep up to the beat.. I now know thir weapon of choice. Later that morning I mananged to make my way up the front and being in a complete world of my own and fixated on ones of the dj's (might i say i was making silly faces) and I almost went ( excuse my language) c*nt up... That stuff is dangerous when you dont expect it not to mentio if your wearing black you come out covered as though someones attacked you with dandruff..

So yes they do use it and they did the other night at chem, am sure Johno and James can vouch for that cause they thought it was funny when I almost went over... I looked like a cartoon character trying to walk across ice...

talc is for babies and old ladies..

Well well well..... I've met a lot of people in this talc Vs no talc page and all i can say at this point is...

The people who seam to hate it the most are the ones i've hardly ever seen on the dance floor..;)

I'm happy with both worlds, i dont mind talc, i've used it before in Melbourne clubs, but then again i dont mind a dry floor. Just no water/sticky substance plz.

I am in total agreeance there Paul "talc sucks". It is way deadly as I mentioned I almost went for a gutser. It does make the floor alot more slipery. What if some un-suspecting punter slips up and does an injury do they then sue the club???

Stop taking that shit out!!!!!! Dance in your bedroom with as much talc as you like just dont bring it out....

In answer to your question do ppl do talc dancing in other states.... I'm a perthie, and i've never seen it done.. interesting in theory... but i'm of the attitude that if it inconveniences other ppl thent don't do it... and talc definately fits that bill... :)

I've only seen talc used on the floor of heaven once when the Tidy Boys were here a couple of years ago. I dont think theres any other explanation for such a large quantity of white powder..
