I did my first weights session in about 2 months on Saturday:thumb: Did chest and tri's and went pretty hard because I had a spotter.

Yesterday I wasn't too bad but today I can hardly move :( I can't move my arms in any direction without some sort of pain across my chest.

I was stretching between every set and after, and i've had a fairly clean diet since the workout with the hope of aiding the recovery. I've been sore before but i'm so sore that I can hardly sleep!

Has anyone got any remedies/solutions for preventing or reducing post gym soreness?

Tiger Balm + lots of stretching.

I'm currently addicted to the stuff.. Pretty much every 2nd night (ie, the day after I've smashed a muscle group) i've got the stuff lathered on..

Yesterday I did my first session in two years ( yep, 2 years ) and I am feeling it. Chest and Biceps are pretty fooked, back to the gym tonight for shoulders, back and triceps.

I'm loving the pain. I had forgotten how awesome it is.

Oh and stretch, stretch and stretch some more. Then resign to the fact that you are going to be sore 80% of the time.

Dont go so hard in your first session back, particularly important on your first legs day, otherwise you wont be able to walk properly for a week. You will probably get sore for the first couple of sessions until you get used to going to the gym again.

never go too hard on your first workout in months. I Have trouble if I have only had 3 weeks off. 8 weeks would be devestating if you applied the intensity of a workout in peak form.

Take it easy on your legs especially mate, you really don't realise how many stairs there are in this world until you have destroyed leg muscles

REST, rest between sets, and rest now after such an intense workout

Last week was my first time back to the gym after 4 years (gulp) and i've pretty much started where i left off, it's all technique and persistence

agree. i'd typically have a "getting back into it" session where i did a reasonably high reps (10-12) all over body workout with some of the less advanced exercises. even that would make you sore.

There is nothing worse than doing your chest or triceps too hard and having to wait a week before you can do another upper body part due to the intensity of that initial welcome back workout.

I know this now

Since i'll only be doing weights once or twice a week (+ cardio 4x a wk) i'll start with a all over routine

I remember the first time I really hammered my legs when I started weight training, the next day my calves and hamstrings had tightened up so much I literally coulddn't stand! I had to call in sick to work and crawl around the house for a day or so.

Is there anything that can help loosen the muscles up a bit and ease the soreness?

Not really mate, whats the rule though ice in the first 48 hours, heat after that?

I have done my chest in once or twice to such a point it just hurt constantly even without movement. The only thing I could do was have Nurofen +, which only numbed the pain slightly for a couple of hours.

Yeah thinking back it was pretty ridiculous, it felt anything but funny at the time though!

i used to get really painful muscles after going back after a long break. i remember a particualrly miserable 2 - 3 days when my biceps were so tight and painful that i couldnt straighten my arms, and was walking around, arms bent at the elbows at life 90degrees. if you havent seen someone walking around like that, let me reassure you all that it looked pretty damn ridiculous and embarassing :( i looked like i was trying to pathetically do a rendition of that robot dance continuously.

nothing much you can do for the pain that i know of, just stretch and just bear the pain for the few days and be happy in the knowledge next time wont be as bad.

As i said in another recent thread, pain is just weakness leaving the body!

Just imagine your muscle fibres growing bigger and stronger, i find that helps!

stretch after workout
cardio to increase bloodflow/circulation which aids in recovery
