View Full Version : [PER] Old skool party in September

OK people, as I promised last year I would be doing one more party for my birthday where I round up some of Perth's class old DJs and we play some of the early house and techno classics from '88 - '92.

Some crew over east messaged me afterwards and said that if they had had a bit more notice they may have come over especially for the weekend with the promise of good tunes, some free kegs (beer) and a mad oldskool crew to party with. That being the case, if any of you are interested, the organisation for this years Strawberry Fields party is now underway.

The hardest thing when doing a party like this is finding a venue willing to give you a chance and despite absolutely rammed clubs for my 27th and 28th, all club managers understand these days is that unholy R n B crap. However, a venue will hopefully be negotiated late next week and I can confirm it on here. Even better is this venue is close to Perth domestic airport if you're from over east.

This year I am 30 (urgh) and it'll be the 4th party I have done. It will also be the last for awhile as costs for doing this party and keeping it as free entry have meant spiralling expenses over the past 4 years.

Very likely the party will be on the 3rd of September - which is a Saturday - however more details will obviously be released closer to the date and of course - through official channels on here.

haha

This year will be the last one for a bit. So many oldskoolers either don't come out anymore or are too busy looking after rugrats, so parties get logistically more and more difficult to organise when everyone is 'free'.

So by calling it early, the use of lame excuses shows up for exactly that - being lame!

Bring on the hardcore!!

OK people venue is confirmed for my 30th party. The date is Saturday September 2nd, 2006. Kick off time is 8pm until 2am (gotta hand the venue back to residents at this stage). Free entry, some free booze (limited) and function priced drinks for all attendees until it finishes. A bargain? You bloody bet.

This party is not an 'official' public event (so I'm not sure how the ITM rules apply here) and I am restricted in the way I advertise it officially (as it is a one off). The event will open doors to the general public from 10pm, I guess I'll just have to message the ITM gods next week when I have a flyer and more details to ask for guidance.

However theres the date and time for anyone who wanted advance notice, obviously more will follow as per ITM's directions.

Oh man.....

Of all the nights in the year I'd dare drag myself away from a cosy evening in front of ITM, we're already booked in for a wedding down Albany way that weekend.

Such a dissapointment we'll miss it. :(

No chance you can fudge your date-of-birth by any chance?!

We'll have to meet up in the near future though. Not sure where you are, we're only a few km NOR. :)

Sorry mate, my actual birthday is on the Sunday 03/09, so I can't miss a chance to rave on into my 30s!

Heres what I'd do if roped into a conflicting marriage function:

1. Attend daytime ceremony.
2. Wear dark coloured bloggs as pants, stripey shirt under jacket.
3. Lurk suspiciously at the rear of church or outdoor area.
4. Bail after vows & rings.
5. Hoon it back to Perth.
6. Get loud with the old skool crew.

;D

Yep we'll definitely have to meet up at some stage. I'm about 15 min south of the City.

Unfortunately my commonwhore is a bit sick at the moment, so my mobility is limited, however once the V8 is fully sick again I can visit.

Yes its me dear :P The Altern8 avatar gives me away a bit.. very similar one to my Teknoscape avatar.

You'll actually be one of the younger ones, don't worry, theres people coming to this who are over 40.

Venue details to be announced soon, gotta finish doing the flyer, then get ITM approval and so forth before I post it all up in here. Lets just say the party is returning to its 'spiritual home' at this stage.

Happy hardcore is not on the menu, sorry, this is 'my style of oldskool' which cuts off at '92 ;D

I think it was the 92 cut off and strawberry fields that gave it away! nice one! well I think I know where and if so excellent venue choice. You know I love upstairs and downstairs and they make the best cocktails in Perth with the best bar staff! Can't wait to see who's on the line-up.

Rear of flyer posted.

Strawberry Fields was a party series which was started to look back at the dance scene to date - concentrating on the then recently closed Berlin Club. Parties were held at James St (now Rise).

The final Strawberry Fields was number 4 and then the promoters (Big Mac & Lilly) stopped doing them. They later started the massively successful 'Reunion' parties in 1995 which stand out as Perth's most cherished oldskool party series, which ran until 1999. God I miss those parties!

I did a b'day party at Drum Club in 2002 for my 26th birthday which was a success, however it had a majority happy hardcore 94 - 97 theme (it coincided with an 'Elysium' night). However happy hardcore is not really my passion - the oldskool house and techno 88 - 92 is.

I toyed with the idea of a full on oldskool party in 2003 and I remembered those awesome Strawberry Fields parties from James St. I decided that if I could resurrect their name I would continue their tradition - with the original promoter's blessing of course. Both Lilly and Big Mac agreed on three conditions:

1. The night was to remain under my creative control only.
2. The night stayed true to previous parties (ie strictly oldskool only).
3. I strove to involve the DJs from the early scene that were also part of the original party series (as much as possible anyway).

These 3 conditions were exactly in-line with my thinking and I was given 'the nod'.

As for the name, well.. the Beatles sung that wonderful song about Strawberry Fields in their chemical taking days.. i.e. "Strawberry Fields forever". Strawberry Fields is an actual place - an orphanage (now closed) in Woolton, Liverpool. John Lennon attended fairs there as a young man, run to raise money for the orphanage and befriended some of its charges.

So.....how was it?????

Said wedding (above) resulted in:
* huge rip in my $5oo frock
* unidentified disco bruising to knees and shins
* vomit in spa (don't ask) that looked like mushrooms
and
* midnight trip to Denmark Hotel banging on door to sell us Jagermeister and redbulls (these were then taken back to wedding and mushroom vomit resulted)
* next day in bed unable to move or speak

so all in all, a great night!

How was yours?

Oldskooler

Well it was a large night, not without its dramas.

One DJ was a no-show, he has subsequently messaged me and told me that he got his weekends mixed up and fronted to someone elses place and they were all 'dude thats next weekend'.

However with that being the only major worry of the night everything else went well.

All sets were blinders (with my mate DJ Rousa stepping up to play Chase's set).

The night culminated with DJ Hutcho playing Perth's anthems to an appreciative crowd that pretty much stayed on the dancefloor from go to whoa.

The final track "take me" by dreamfrequency was played as homage to the Berlin Club, where that was the final tune played at its last night "Splash".
