seeing as though this is the old school forum and not the trance forum we shouldn't have so many trance n00bs up in arms ;)
So i'm wondering if any/many other folks out there started their adventure in trance around the early-mid90s only to see/hear it become the "reach for the layz0rs" mediocrity it's become today ?

i got into trance in 1997- went through the whole gatecrasher thing through 99 and only lost interest in 2004- i think there are only maybe 5 new tracks i've liked in the last 2 years, and two of them are remixes of classics (orkidea's xpanding girl & bryan kearney's mix of lost emotions).
along the way got into the early 90s stuff and built up a pretty good collection and knowledge base.., if you're looking to learn we'll gladly suggest some tracks :)
trance n00bs irritate me. thats why i no longer look at the trance forum :P

Yes.
Mostly pre-96, though still consider Binary Finary's 1998 to be one of the more clever (if only it weren't so overplayed) pieces of "modern" trance in my post-rave era.
From there, everything shifted to Novation® Supernova® and Access® Virus® arpeggiators, clichéd filter sweeps, formulaic chord progressions, builds and breakdowns.
And by then, the name trance was "stolen" and "rebadged". :(

Not sure how ya wanna classify it (trance or what?), my first couple of tracks of obsession were:
- Tremora Del Terror - Illuminatae
- First Rebirth - Jones and Stevenson

instant zen - astral community (astral mix) is one of the best
1993 on NOOM
Started to get into trance late 95 towards the end of my raver days. Loved it at the time, then I stopped raving when the scene got harder and messier.
I can't listen to new age trance though.

Early 90s trance I loved:
* Basscult - Paradise Place (one of my favourite tracks)
* Gypsy - I trance you (Big tune on Limbo records)
* Pacific Symphony - Fruit of Love (classic uplifting trance tune)
* Sourmash - Pilgramige to paradise (dunno if its trance or acid but that distorted vocal still sends shivers down my spine)
* Slackjaw - Drive my body (pianos and synths, all class)

Renegade Legion - The Weeping Waste
Lunatic Asylum - People Want Paradise
Union Jack - Red Herring

Did a bit of Cosmic Baby in my time... the Thinking By Myself album getting quite a thrashing for the trancey ambient affair at home... Fan of Energy 52's Cafe Del Mar from day one, then more into the Superstition and Noom records stuff.... followed by Platipus.

Real Trance Represent!
Cosmic Baby - Spacetrack
Dance 2 Trance - We came in Peace
Mandala - Astralia
Cj Boland - Camaruge (Galaxy Mix)
Funny how these tracks are miles apart energy/bpm wise but still maintain that great dark vibe of the early era trance tracks and could easily be played in the same set without continuity clash
yep used to love the old Harthouse/Eye Q, some Superstition and definately the old freaked out ACID Trance on Labworks...some Trope stuff although apparently it was Techno according to TPH...i like Techno when it was Trancey and Trance when it was Techno-e ;]

what is trance? Pretty tough question I reckon.
Early (1988) KLF = 'trance' - they called their 12's Pure trance, Kylie said Trance, last Train to Trancentral ... Dmob had a track called Trance Dance*
Even that dude called Guru Josh, check out his video clip from 1990 4 some hilarious trance dancing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISU_VJSLbdc
"trance" as I see it, had some pretty cheesy moments in the 80s and early 90s til the Germans took over.
Still good fun though!:p
re: D-mob - as someone said on a review in Amazon, they were the 'Black Eyed Peas' of the late 80s. :rainman:

Hahah... classic.. too funny. Now *that's* Year 10 School Dance material!!!
Given that you were out'n'about the clubs by this point, did Guru Josh have underground street cred...
...or was he simply a product and a one-hit-commercial-wonder that the luv'ed up cringed* at?
(*Or did the uber-cool jadedness not creep in until later?)
Neat little set-up he's got there on stage though.
'What time is love' (the original '88 mix) is probably one of the earliest trance choons and has a very 'goa' feel about it...quite often thought of as the first 'goa trance' track, although there were plenty of New Beat/EBM trax that had that feel earlier on in the peice...

Definitely one hit wonder and a surprise hit (for him) no doubt. I think everyone who has a hit in clubland who goes nutso becomes someone the lov'd up cringed at. Rarely do they bounce back.
But 1990 was a very commercial time in dance - on the back of the Italo house explosion we had Stevie V's Dirty Cash, Adamski NRG, 49ers Touch Me, KLF, Snap's The Power being played at school dances and clubs (and locally released for a nice price on vinyl!).
Guru Josh couldn't fight back tho - his album was a surprisingly ill-advised release - it contained dance covers of 'Louie Louie' and (did we need another) cover of 'Popcorn'. You can smell large record company all over it. Both Infinity and the album was released on the fledgling Deconstruction and would've made em (along with K-Klass) a lot of money.
Enough showing off, I shamelessly admit I have a soft spot for this track. As for everyone else, well I do have a vivid memory of an empty dancefloor in Kinselas in Sydney when 'Pacific State' by 808 State (released at the ass end of 89) was played - but Guru Josh got em going!
And I think a lot of light operators in clubs/parties everywhere had a track they could play with the lights with - go pitch dark, build up the strobe for the sax solo intro as it builds up ...

I wouldnt call anything pre 1992 trance. Trance evolved around this time around the release of "age of love" by age of love. Prior to this it was simply techno.
KLF What Time is Love I would classify as early techno, but hey, who gives a fuck about classification :)
Ininity by Guru Josh was definitely ahead of its time genre wise though.
Early trance is still one of the most ground breaking era in music I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of. One of the reasons I dig recent DJs like James Holden is that through the progressive/tribal and electronic sound he has pushed the last few years reminds me a lot of the early ground breaking days.

here, here for mr holden. I feel exactly the same way. That Balance CD, particularly the first 30 minutes of CD2, wow.
Got to go listen to it now!
I used to love trance during the innovative period (pre '96) and thought at the time it was the best music genre I'd ever come across.
The emotional journey it could take you on - sometimes sad, but in a healing way.
The offshoots of Acid Trance and Hard Trance at the time were also rewarding as the emphasis was more on the Trance being deep and sometimes a little dark.
Personally, once it became uplifting, predictable and cheesy around '96 that was the end of it. Robert Miles 'Children' perfected the formula that stunted its creativeness for me.
A couple of other great tunes of the era:
Brainchild - Symmetry
Brainchild - Symphonica
Dance 2 Trance - Hello San Francisco
Humate - Love Stimulation
Paragliders - Paragliders
Union Jack - Two full moons and a trout (Casper Pound mix)
Zyon - No Fate
Plus most things touched by Oliver Lieb and Cosmic Baby
Some local tunes:
FSOM - Welcome
FSOM - Heaven
Mystic Force - Everglade
Third Eye - Morphic Resonance
For me 'pure' trance are tracks such as:
* Sequential - Prophet
* Mystic Force - Starbust
* Abfarht - Come In To My Life (Breathless Mix)
* The Overlords - Sundown ( Ionizer Mix )
* L.s.G - Hearts
* Humate - Love Stimulation ( PVD Mix )
* Friends Lovers & Family - Diamond Lils
* Cosmic Baby - Heavens Tears
* LDC - Parsec
* Zen Paradox - The Light At The End ( remix ) etc

Humate - Love Stimulation
i don't quite follow the popularity of this tune. Much prefer other Humate works. Especially his rmx of The Humate and Rabbit in the Moon epic East ... huge spacious track with just this acid line gradually filtering up through the cruisy yet driving pads and percussion :zabiela:

I was a great fan of the "hard trance" era that came out of Germany in 1993/1994/1995. In my opinion, the greatest hard trance tune ever written was Outside World by Sunbeam, followed very closely by The First Rebirth.

East is an awesome tune, aswell as 3.1
For me 'pure' trance are tracks such as:
* Friends Lovers & Family - Diamond Lils
* Cosmic Baby - Heavens Tears How could I forget these. The Jam El Mar "Funny How Time Flies" mix of Heavens Tears was the supreme version IMO.
what's always amused me is when i was getting into this muzak i quite liked (and still do) the work of Mijk van Dyk. Did you see Mijk Van Dyk when he suddenly toured in 95 in the middle of the Schoneberg frenzy at that joint down King St?
It was the first time I'd heard:
* Pete Lazonby - Sacred Cycles
In the middle of those strobe lights - wow what a tune..
I was a great fan of the "hard trance" era that came out of Germany in 1993/1994/1995. Probably the last Hard Trance tune that did it for me was:
* Mikerobeniks - Julika

I'm going to buck the trend and say I loved my trance 10 years ago, and I still love it now. It's very different, yes. You guys have mentioned some absolute classics, Firth Rebirth etc. I absolutely love that hard acid-inspired stuff. But I still get along to the A Night of Trances regularly, Gas on a Sat night, going to the upcoming Transmission and Godskitchen parties, it's all still good. I'm just glad cheesey happy-hard died somewhere along the way. And there aren't too many trance tracks around these days with nauseating vocals anymore, at least not where I go out.
