Hi Guys,

I'm in the market to buy a camera and am looking at the following Sony CyberShots --> http://www.sony.com.au/dis/catalog/product.jsp?categoryId=22119

I'm interested in DSCW50S, DSCW70S and also the DSCW100S

[edit] also the DSCN1

Negating the cost, which camera would be good to use for indoors and outdoors situations and also the odd club photo here and there??

Cheers,

alfp :)

ps. I did a search for Sony Cameras and several threads came up but where old. Due to cameras constantly changing, I thought a new thread would be warranted.

See if you can find a review on those camera you want at www.dpreview.com

I don't know how good or bad those sony cameras you mentioned are. From reading the sony site, the only differences I can tell between the three models are their megapixels size (which is just the size/resolution of the photos it captures), and the 100s allows manual control over aperture and shutter speed.

The megapixel size will be important to you if you're planning on printing the photos. Even then, if you're just printing normal photo sizes (6"x4") then 5MP is plenty.

I have a 5MP camera, but on most occassion I capture photos at 3.1MP just so I fit more photos on the memory card. Here's a photo I just snapped at 5MP for an example

http://www.imageviper.com/displayimage/51108/1/DSC05656.JPG (http://www.imageviper.com/dip/51108/DSC05656.JPG)
(It's a 1.84MB jpeg, 2592 x 1944 resolution)

And the manual features would be important if you want to use the camera for more than point & shoot/happy snaps

^^^ Thanks heaps for the feedback Duke!

Question re: size of the photos.

Let's say I got the 100 (8mp) how big would the size of each photo be?? Also can you change the resolution if need be??

I will be getting a 2gb memory stick and am wondering how many I could fit on the stick??

The Duke - what about the DSCN1??

Would this be roughly similar to the DSCW100S?

Taken from http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/sony_dscw100.asp
For the DSCW100S
Max resolution 3264 x 2448
Low resolution 2592 x 1944, 1280 x 960, 640 x 480

I'm not certain, but 8MP on a 2GB card, you'll get around 580 photos may be?

Yeah, they are very similar. The major difference in cost would come down to the DSCN1 being more compact.

There is one thing, but I hardly ever come across anyone complaining about this except for myself- The DSCN1 doesn't have a optical viewfinder, so you can only use the LCD screen while taking photos. Personally I try to avoid using the LCD screen on my camera because it almost halves the battery life (but my camera is old, and the two cameras you mentioned have a lot longer battery life then mine). But my main reason- 90% of my camera's use is in nightclubs, and in low light situations an LCD view screen just shows black, but I can still see using the viewfinder. But people I know with cameras without optical viewfinders just point the camera in the general direction and shoot. Which usually works out fine anyway.

i picked up the DSCN1 in tokyo in feb for about $550Aus. It's quite schmick with all the fancy touchscreen stuff. rarely use the 8.1mp setting but love the widescreen and some of the manual functions. make sure you have a superfast memory card though if you use the high setting and manual functions otherwise you wait for like a minute for the image to process a nightshot with no flash

sorry if i'm hijacking the thread but i didnt think i should start a new one for such a similar question.

i'm looking to get a new digicam myself, seeing as my old one has been broken for about 3 years now and i'm about to head overseas.

i'm looking at the Sony DSC-S600 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/sony_dscs600.asp) at the moment.

i'll be using it outdoors most of the time, but i also want to be able to take decent pics in low light (club) conditions. ISO 80-1000 should be fine, yea? i'm buying it duty free, but i don't want to spend more than about $350 on the camera itself (seeing as i'll have to buy a memory card too).

basically i want to know if anyone with experience with this camera has anything particularly good or bad to say about it (or can recommend a different camera that will be better/cheaper/whatever). thanks.

Get a memory card from Ebay. Picked up a 2Gb Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo High-Speed for $70!! Cheaper than the discount that I can get and waaaaaaaay cheaper than retail in the shops..

As peepyfun said, you should use a high-speed memory stick otherwise you will be waiting a while between shots ;)

and he picked up one for me as well  My second Sony cybershot, and for my snap happy ways, I think it's a great little camera. I'm a bit of an auto setting girl, which I know certain friends of mine hate :p but the size, big screen, and ease of use are all winners in this little number!
