squarepusher - goodnight jade
anders llar - illusions of a summerbreeze
chris clark - farewell track
james ruskin - escape or die
fuck it, not ambient, but just for the sake of being one of the darkest tunes ever made

Scorn, Dead Voices On Air and Shinjuku Filth / Thief are most definitely some good names to look out for as well...
And I love Lustmord; fascinating producer / musician. This is the guy who overlays ambience recorded from 'places of trauma' such as abbatoirs and prisons over his music, resulting in some really unsettling intangible atmospheres...he also recently did a couple of 5.1 DVD remixes for Tool, but they were a bit disappointing, IMHO...

Scorn was mentioned above - highly recommended.
Certain tracks by Speedranch & Jansky Noise, 13th Hour, V/Vm, TZII, LFO Demon, Richard For Cerebellum,
nice thread. was just listening to plastikman's closer, that's a bit eerie and spooky.
cosign on the shinjuku filth, too, chris. good stuff.
think i might have to go through compressed's list there and have a few listens...

I caved and downloaded the Sunn O))) and Boris collaboration. Wow. Wow. Fucking wow! I mean I was always going to love it as it's two of my favourite bands making a fucking album together but didn't think it would as good as it is!
If you like dark ambient or just adventurous music, get this. It comes out properly at the end of this month but then there will be a two disc version a month later. I'm gettin' that sucka.

Various Artists - Ambient 4: Isolationism
S.P.K - Zamia Lehmanni

Shinjuku Thief
Alan Lamb
a lot of the dorobo stuff
Tim Hecker is awesome, although his stuff is probably more melancholic than dark.
Somaya Langley was great at liquid architecture.
Anything and everything remotely related to Mick Harris

The other night I let my new girlie choose something from my iRiver. She didn't recognise much so for some reason she chose Lustmord's Heresy! She actually didn't mind it which is cool.
Everyone check out Nurse With Wound - Shipwreck Radio: The Final Broadcasts

This is the only one I have... Tried to get others off Soulseek a few months ago after I read The Wire review but came up with nothing.

anyone mention Black Lung yet?
evilchris2
23-Nov-06, 11:51am
I find Black Lung a little bit more dance / industrial-based these days rather than the older more ambient stuff Thrussell used to do under that name...I was a bit disappointed by 'The Coming Dark Age' as thought it was a bit too dancey...

Anyone here like Ant-Zen and Hymen Records? I'm thinking stuff like Xela, Xingu Hill, Shinjuku Filth...crunchy assed stuff for those who like Black Lung
yeah I have some stuff on Hymen, in particular Somatic Responses in the ambient vein, a bit more on the industrial tip though as consistent with their catalogue..
personally on a 'dark' ambient tip I highly recommend anything by henrich at hart on postition chrome. stuff still (?) readily available would be Bongra on Roussian Roulette, Minion on Eupholous, and a few records by enzym on Suburban Trash and related labels.
I guess it depends on what exactly sounds your after though, heaps of stuff around..

Oh - I recently reviewed a couple of Somatic releases for US mags - this would've been the Fluorescent Grey album and Undacova's 'Disturbance.' I certainly really enjoyed Fluoro, but that Undacova record was like a dodgy Ant-Zen breakcore knockoff - not too inspiring. I'll look into more of their stuff though...
werd 2 tim hecker
he's got a new album out aswell
tim hecker - harmony in ultraviolet

not sure of the release your talking about but from my experience Somatics have been around for donkeys and create a sound that is distinclty thier own, probably in my all time top 5 producers ever. I dont think they would be ripping anyone off..
I havnt however bought anything by them in the last year or 2 so it might well be they have gone to the dogs like many others, unlikely though...
if you chasing their stuff, the older the better i say. classic records if you can get em would be stuff on deadly systems, praxis, UW, and suburban trash... oh and early drop bass networks for hard acid

Another vote for Tim Hecker. Its new one is one of my favourites this year.
The other day I discovered someone called Kali Yuga. Dark ambient with kinda gothy vocals. Pretty decent. The album is called The End and is just two long tracks. I found it on a blog so PM me for a link if you're interested. Highly recommended.

Ambient 4: Isolationism 2xCD (http://www.discogs.com/release/72804) is a great compilation.
Dark ambient throughout- ranging from drone/crescendo style to more rhythmic/melodic stuff. It features tracks by Mick Harris, Jim o'Rourke, KK Null (sometime Merzbow collaborator) and a rare Aphex Twin track.

i really love sunn o))) . i used to do an ambient show on college radio in the usa called equinox but i can't remember a lot of the tracks that were really amazing (i took over from someone else so I didn't have to seek music out, just chose it from the shelves as they were ordered by genre). played a lot of main and squarepusher. i wish i had kept proper playlists.

i reckon you could get into some of the darker shit, karrupt. you've just gotta let go of the urge to kill with loud drums.
