Hey guys,

I've been mixing some Thievery Corporation, Salmonella dub etc lately and would like to get a full set together to play in a small, chilled out Cocktail bar. Can anyone recommend some simalar artists to Thievery or specific tracks to look out for?

Cheers :thumb:

The genre labels I added are pretty general/vague, take them with a grain of salt. :)

Very good suggestions.

Air totally own this category. You can't go wrong with playing Air in cocktail bars, particularly something off Moon Safari. Pretty obvious and I'm sure youve already thought of/done it but juuuuust in case :)

if there was anything that could beat it, which it can't, it would be kruder and dorfmeister - live @ montreux jazz festival. 3 and a half hours of goodness. peter kruder sings dorfmeister happy birthay half way through the set and everyone joins in.

You'll be well served by this thread, Timo, as there have been some awesome suggestions! Great to see Ninja tune artists getting frequent mentions, what a great label with a diverse array of sounds...

A fair bit of nu jazz has been mentioned, but you all forgot Cinematic Orchestra! Have been listening to 'Every Day' a lot lately and obsolutely love it. Such a nice sense of atmosphere, beautifully crafted vocals, seemless integration of electronic production techniques and traditional jazz instrumentation.

Also make sure you check out another Ninja Tune band, Jaga Jazzist. Their music is positively amazing. Their latest album 'What we must' is a bit more post-rock than their previous stuff, but nonetheless continues the theme of atmosphere, and slowly developing beauty. I've never been to Scandinavia, but this is how I imagine Norway in the autumn. Some of their stuff isn't very chilled out though, can get quite edgy, dramatic in parts, which, although stunning, may not be what you are after. Still plenty of dreamy, down-tempo stuff though.

Check out the Plaid album 'Double Figure' too. Some of the tracks are pretty pepped up, happy sounding tunes, but you'll probably find that the opener, 'Eyen,' with its sullen yet warm analogue tones may fit your set quite nicely. 'Not For Threes' is another good one. The track they did with Bjork is stunning, simply stunning.

I'd suggest if you want to get more aquainted with Ninja Tune, pick up any of the compilations like Jazztricktechnology, Flexistentialism, Funkungfusion and Xen Cuts. All of those compilations are great albums to have and to listen to ... but better yet they're a reference point to start exploring the Ninja Tune stable and the many talented acts on it

^^^ definitely.

also worth checking are K7's dj kicks series, as well as K7 itself, which has a whole bunch of cool downbeat artists.

oh, also go check out the mushroom jazz compilations, i think number 3 is my favourite, but i can't really remember. either way they're all pretty cool and probably the kinda shiz you're after too. some la funk mob stuff might be up your alley and if you're after cocktail bar sort of music definitely check out some of the releases on G.A.M.M, there's a bunch of stuff on there that would be pretty well suited.

oh, and on a homegrown tip you can't go past hermitude or fdel :)

Thievery Corp style beatsy lounge eh? you could start with other artists on Thievery Corp's Eighteenth Street Lounge label, ESL music: Karminsky Experience, Ursula 1000, Frederico Aubele.

Then there's Big Bang. Inverse Cinematics. The Jazzinvaders. Jazzconductor/Beatconductor. NICOLA CONTE. Five Corners Quintet. Jazzanova. Fertile Ground. Breakestra. Asayake. Jazztronik. NICKODEMUS (pick up any/all of Giant Step's Turntables on the Hudson series for great loungin). Fort Knox Five. Both of Bebel Gilberto's 'remixed' albums. Ditto for many remixes of Da Lata. Baby Mammoth. Alex Attias. Crazy P. DJ Mitsu the Beats. Diesler. Wibutee. Dublex Inc. DJ Hint (the Tremmuh EP is a wee ripper). Dzihan & Kamien. DJ Krush. "Adoption Agency", Krush's remixes of Monday Michiru. The Visioneers (aka Marc Mac aka 4hero). The Herbaliser. Nemoy. Chris Joss. Povo.

Be warned. Thievery corp are a gateway drug, err, artist.

I heard a rumour that Rhythm and Sound are coming to Australia. I am so VERY psyched for that, See Mi Yah remixes was one of my favourite albums of last year.

I have to add Jeff Dread to this list to. Return From Alpha 1 never gets old.
