yo

there's a thread in the breaks forum, but since a few of us e/d/e kids have been mentioning some nice dubstep releases, i thought i'd start us a thread.

as per the other threads, i've been diggin'...

burial - burial
boxcutter - oneiric
milanese - extend
plasticman's may 2006 mix (this is FIRE)
moving ninja live @ frigid
skream - skreamizm

plus digital mystikz have dropped a few good ones lately, and a couple of kode9's mixes have been dope as.

your turn.

I'm no good with keeping up with new releases and such ... i just know i dig these sounds emerging ... so i'm no use providing names just yet ;D

for the most part i eagerly leap on anything released on the Planet Mu label

P.S. does anyone want to try and define the precise differences between dubstep and grime ? I've come across conflicting ideas

Grime has vocals.... Innit??

Check out Scarecrow - Taken

It was on part two of this weeks Garage Pressure podcast. Awesome tune.

There are disputing defs of grime: the usual one is that it must have vocals, and then there is the debate about whether you can have dubstep with vocals.

The other def I've come across is that grime can be like IDM just slowed down (think stuff by Hawerchuk for an excample).

And then there are cross over style stuff which you see from the shadetek team and some other groups which seem to draw from a variety of these and combine them.

But mainly I don't try to define them and just say dubstep/grime together to prevent confusion, principally my own.

but some good dubstep - check out artists like shackleton, benga, slaughter mob, toasty/toasty boy, vex'd, loefah, and coki. Also check the moving ninja release on tectonic, shit is fire.

I don't really get albums so much as tracks/rekkids though.

edit: sunza bitch, awesome shit nic_zero -> been looking for that track for a while, heard it on a quiet storm mix. Taken is killer.

As I see it, Grime is definately MC dominated, and has more in common with battle raps than its garage heritage. Subject matter tends to mostly comprise of threats of being "merked". *gasp*

As for grime instrumentals, they tend to have a more "synthetic" sound, as a rule. Not always of course, but i find that there is a warmth to most dubstep releases that is lacking in grime. A proliferation of handclaps also seems to be a feature of many grime tracks.

Grime is also generally identified by a general lack of production values. Again, this is a generalisation.

As for dubstep, check:

Elemental
Toastyboy!!
DMZ/Digital Mystikz
Luke Envoy
Search n Destroy

...and the mighty, mighty Boxcutter's "Oneiric". You need this album.

oh yeah, check macabre unit - killer bee for a slice of quality grime. sick tune, only ever heard it on a plasticman mix from a while back but if it ever got released, it's disgusting.

And if you want something TOUGH as nails: you've got to check Vex'd.

Especially their Breezeblock mix, which was voted as the best mix of 05 by BBC listeners.

Some Grime has slick as fuck production tho. Check out Kano and Low Deep's Get Set and the Run The Road version of Sway's Up Your Speed. Fucking LOVE.

yeh I love Vex'd. They're what got me into dubstep (or breakstep or whatever). Yeh citizen thats the problem with grime, I think its now pretty hard to define cos it covers a pretty broad sound now. Either way I love this style of music.

I also recommend
Emalkay (esp Frequency)
Distance
mark one (mrk1)
n-type
skream
shackleton
edit: and various production <- not always dubstep but always good.

man I wish I had more money, got lots of dubstep/grime on mp3 but a relatively small amount of wax, and want more :(

grime and dubstep are like jungle and drum'n'bass. totally different, yet complementary, overlapping and in some lights difficult to tell apart. definitely slanted to vocals and simpler musical composition in grime as distinct from dubstep's textural and layered approach.
