If the 50's had rock and roll, the 60's had hippy music, 70's had glam, 80's had pop, the 90's had electronic, what has this decade got thats so unique?

can't agree that the 80s was pop ... pop's been doing it's thing since the 60s really. The 60s also had a heap of funk and soul .. i'd say those styles of music were more unique for their time than pop. The pop of the 70,80s and 90s has all been pretty disposable, but the RnB and soul of the 60s and 70s shits on what carries the same lables today from a great height.
So, what's this decade got that's so unique? Dunno ... although we're halfway through it so you'd imagine we'd have some idea by now huh. Although i think this guy will be etched onto many of our memories as a part of the naughties :emo:

Yes I was being general. The point of the question is, what is important musically about this decade?

important .. hrmmm
i think the whole emo thing will be well remembered ... not sure how important it is though
I think the 00s will go down as the decade that electronica and dance music really established itself as being as valid, accepted and brilliant as any previous major musical movements ... classical included.

Im not even sure what emo is other than what I read about on these forums...
Is it new though? The Smiths and Morrisey were doing that shit in the eighties.
Im not entirely convinced electronic music has established itself, it is still out there and has a huge following and it certainly has matured from the nineties, but I also believe there has been a significant decline in innovation.

Certainly the fashions of 06 may be remembered as the 80s.
Musically, there's the 00s slant on 80s electro.
And the 2 second snippet 80s sample into a overly-pumped dance tracks.
Look forward to the remaining 4 years...

given the list above, I'd have to say urban (puts flak jacket on now).

Neo, minimal has been around for donkey's, although it does seem to be the flavour of the day. Just like prog, trance and electro it is having it's day with the mainstream and will die a horrible death (or be rebranded).
This decade was the birth of hybrid music. RAP/Rock, Techno/Rock, Electro/Punk etc etc all rubbish really.
.... and reality TV - yuck!

nawww ... that was all done in the 90s.
Pop Will Eat Itself, Run DMC Vs Aerosmith, Public Enemy Vs Anthrax, The Prodigy, Ministry are just the ones i can think of off the top of my head

Agreed , however they were one off projects rather than actual bands devoted to an entire sound, more so with electro/punk bands that have popped up over the last two years

Fair enough, I personally felt that this was/is a lot more predominate in 00's than it was in the 90's that's all.

Let's not forget the very stellar Judgement Night soundtrack...way ahead of its time.

Gelled hair and turned up shirt collars.
Electronic music is just another music style in this decade, its accepted. Theres none of that 'brand new scene' feel to it.
However this decade will be remembered for the rise in r n b. God I can't stand that stuff.
