View Full Version : Old Timey Music

I'm very interested in artists like Daedelus and Amon Tobin, who use a lot of old 30's and 40's sounding samples in their records, and old lounge/jazz/swing music in general.

I wonder can anyone point me towards some records?

I have pretty much everything by Daedelus, Amon Tobin, Prefuse 73, The Cinematic Orchestra, and I just picked up a good album by The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, and some Venetian Snares vs Bong-Ra mixes which were right down my alley. Should I investigate more Bong-Ra?

I'm quite open to straight up old music, but not all that clued in as to what artists make the really swingin' smokey shit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

hmmm.....

i think it was Madlib who managed to score himself a deal with Blue Note to remix anything he wanted from their entire back catalogue... i haven't got a copy of it any more but i seem to remember it was pretty dope.

ANT (half of atmosphere) also uses some really swingin' old samples in a lot of his stuff... don't know how much instrumental work he releases though, i know he dropped a mixtape last year on rhymesayers but haven't heard it.

possiblah check some Blockhead as well; music by cavelight is a good starting point. i'd also recommend RJD2's deadringer, as well as his promo mix, your face or your kneecaps.

Thanks for the recommendations so far. I'm fairly up to date with Blockhead and RJD2, and they do have some of the sound I'm looking for, but not quite ... jazzy enough.

Amon Tobin - Bridge (from the Permutation LP)

is a very good example of what I'm looking for. Heavy, moody and SWINGIN'.

Oh, and I should mention Skalpel, I'm very much into those guys. Anyone got a mad Polish Jazz collection they could rip me some names out of?!

Look for "Xploding Plastix".

They should be exactly what you're after. Especially the album "Amateur girlfriends go pro skirt agents", I think that's what it's called.

Also some of Jaga Jazzists more chilled stuff would be very appropriate. (There's a killer track called Low Battery on the Animal Chin EP which is what you're after).

All good recommendations. I have one DJ Cam CD but I can't think what it is, and haven't listened to it in a long time. Better dig it up. :)

Fila Brazillia, I have a fair bit of, they're great, as are Baby Mammoth (in the same vein).

I listened to some Xploding Plastix today - it was ROCKING!!! I must get a hold of some albums!! :D
