View Full Version : filters... bags... tEh camera accessory thread!
Right... since I can't afford a new DSLR for Christmas :( I'm pimping out my camera by buying an adapter barrel for my FZ20 a new baggie and some filters.
hoya seems to be a decent name in filters, yah??
lowepro seem to be the ducks nuts of bags?? i want a camera bag i can keep my flash attached to 24/7 adn one i can store the filters + batteries + cards etc etc.... possibly backpack, although the quick draw of a shoulder is appealing.
are there any alternatives?
i've seen a lot of people successfully use crumplers as camera bags
i heart my crumpler karachi outpost so much ive considered marrying it. they have some nice smaller shoulder bags/backpacks etc. plus their website is funneh.

I thought the FZ20 would come with an adaptor? My FZ7 did.
I'd reccomend going for a good circular polarizer if you havent got one already. They are a lot of fun.
I'm thinking of getting a crumpler 7 million dollar home as i have a few camera shop vouchers to use up.
I'd reccomend not storing your camera with flash attached. It's just asking for trouble.
no i didn't :( i have the adapter for the sun hood, but that's to a larger dia.

yeah, i should qualify that statement.... what i want is a bag big enough so i can sit it in there while i think i will need it... i don't want to have to be taking it on and off all the time.
storing it I'll take it off, but i want to be able to place the camera down into the bag with the flash attached.

With one of the Crumpler sling bags you should be able to take out enough dividers to do that.
RE: the adaptor... i thought it had a thread on the inside also? Just get a filter to match that diameter.

lowepro slingshot bag ftw.
Its the photojournalists weapon of choice

yeah, the slingshot will definitelt hold everything you want
i'm a huge fan of the crumplers as they don't scream 'camera' to everyone when you're walking down the street (unless the other person has one too, then you can share a secret nod)
as I carry my camera all the time i needed something that wasn't obviously a camera bag and strong enough to take a lot of crap. the crumpie is still in perfect nick after over a year being carried every day, on public transport, in bars and clubs, out in the rain, earthcore dust, etc :)

the problem with crumpler bags is... you just want all of them!

haha. naah, i'm happy with my current bag (budgie smugler I think) it's just small enough to still wear in crowded clubs and fits my core equipment.
although I do have three small crumplers I strap o nthe sides to add various bits and pieces as required, so I guess your theory still holds true :)

well i want one to replace the technics record bag i have (general day bag) then i want one that can hold my books and laptop, then i want one that holds my camera gear.
i have a giant lowepro bag to hold all of the above at once though... but its HOOJ!
Also I think now is a good time to pimp www.cambags.com
See all sorts of bags and what kind of gear fits in them!
What discouraged me to buy lowepro bag is that you can easily tell that there is an expensive equipment inside the bag since it looks specific for high tech equipment. That is important because you want your bag to be less suspicious and ordinary to reduce theft or people just starring at your big and funny looking bag. I bought this bag Crumpler (http://www.crumpler.com.au/Cart/Resources/CartResources/218_res/b218_o1.jpg) which sort of looks like an ordinary small bag and is more convenient to carry. I can put a dslr camera with lens + extra lens or flash.
how do i know what the fastest speed of SD card is available?

unless youre shooting raw on an eos 1ds i dont really think youll notice the extra speed. cheaper and slower ftw.

Yup. The good ol' Ultra II should be fine.
Extreme IV is out so you should be able to find Extreme III's going cheap.

I also have the 7 million dollar home crumpler bag and I lubs it  Whilst O/S it never left my shoulder, and my cash could also be stashed in the pockets safely. The real benefit was that it doesn't *really* look like a camera case, and on the streets at least I felt safer!
Coming from a complete beginner, what would you use filters for? I vaguely recall something about UV filters but don't really know whats available. Do they enhance colours, or can they do other magical things?
Examples of awesome filterage would also be much appreciated!

there are massive amounts of filters available which do many different things. many arent as useful anymore with digital, but with film they were essential for colour balancing etc etc.
the most common filters people will use with digital are;
UV - its primary function is to cut UV light which can sometimes give a very light blue haze when shooting outdoors. but they are more commonly used as a "protector" filter which is permanently left on your lens to avoid scratching the lens element. scratch your filter and just buy a new one. scratch your lens and your in trouble.
circular polariser - cuts relfected light from non metallic surfaces. mostly used when shooting in bright sunlight because it gives a beautiful blue sky. when shooting the ocean it gives it a better colour and you can see through the water better. if youre taking a shot with windows in it, it will cut reflections. you will lose a stop or so but with ttl metering its not such a problem.
you can get warming filters, warming polarisers etc etc but like i said, you can do very similar things in photoshop so most non pros will only use the above two. do some googling or even check out hoya's website and have a squiz whats available.

woo! great to see so many Crumpler fans here!!!
New colours are filtering their way into all stores now.
Anyone interested in checking out a Crumpler bag for your photo gear and/or laptop, I would reccommend bringing your stuff into one of our stores, and getting the staff to give you the low down on all the bells and whistles.
If anyone has any crumpler specific questions, please drop me a line :)
Yep... happy with my Crumpler. Doesn't look like a camera bag and going OS with it will be a treat due to that fact.

Yeah I will think I will do this... i can't figure out which one to get.
I have...
SLR camera sometimes with 1 extra lens
OR Medium format rig with 2 extra lenses (chunky fucker)
Then I want room for my ipod, headphones, and stuff like that
Room for a notebook (ie paper notebook)
Water bottle
Jumper
Computer (but never carried at the same time as my cameras as I have a seperate bag for that)
I think I will lug everything I have into a crumpler store, dump it on the floor and go "FIT THIS SHIT IN A BAG FOR ME"

skylight 1B filter.... what's the difference between this and the UV... unless i want to spend a LOT more on a pro filter then this is the option as they're out of stock on the UV.

it turns bright white light a slighly rose colour. some people use them for landscapes and especially portraits because it gives nice warm skin tones.
apparently.
edit
to answer the other part of the question, a uv filter simply cuts uv light which can in certain situations give a very slight blue cast.

UV cuts UV and is clear
Skylight is pink and reduces blue/green cast for full-sunlight shooting.
Haze is yellow and reduces blue, kind of like a weak warming filter
If you're a digital user just go with UV.
crapckaes... yeah i just read that... cheers.
I'm now trying to work out whether it'll make that much of a difference.
i might keep it and if i have any troubles get to the nearest camera store (hopefully there is one :meh: ) in ho Chi Mien and get a UV filter.
it'll be interesting to see if i can notice a difference.... but it should be okay, most of the photos will be people shots and landscapes.
now i just have to get into the city and get the bag :D
got the bag
ended up buying 2  they've got new day packs, similar size to the cheaper camera back packs but less than half the price. and got the smaller 4million $ home instead of the 5 or 6.
the main thing was that i wanted to have the camera away if i felt the need or it got heavy and annoying, this was the cheapest way.... so anything else but the camera and flash will go in the back pack and the camera and flash fit perfectly in the 4mil bag.
final thing is the arrival of the filters & cap and i have to get some 512 cards. think I'll get 2 extra this time.
