most of there gear is loaned from Canon & Nikon pro services...Getty & Wireimage also provide them with a fair amount of gear.

actually i was at day one of the cricket in sydney, and was wondering the same thing.
do they have to get hired to photograph there, or can they just pay to gain entrance to the field. i wonder how it works.

I actually went to the cricket today for the very last hour, and was able to bring my camera around. i've got a 350D, and used an old EF 75-300mm usm lens. doesn't take great pictures but the odd shot comes out well.

i was shooting at f/8, iso400, and was getting really fast shutter speeds, like 1/3200 etc. i thought at first that light would be a problem but it obviously wasn't.
im sure i would have battled if i had cloud cover

zero editing, f/9, 1/2000s, iso400 @300mm uncropped. taken from members stand (8 rows in front of players change rooms)

100% crop, no editing or resizing:

though it gives a purple tinge around some edges, eg. i cropped the fielder from the same shot:

this one was at 210mm, and i cropped it to vertical. gotta say im amazed how damn perfect it is considering my equipment. no adjustments either

They had a close up of one of the photographers today... his lens looked like it'd been to hell and back. Testament to Canon's build quality that the thing is still working.

mark taylor clearly knows fuck all about photography. he was rambling on for a solid 5 mintues about how committed ponting was attempting to stop a boundry and how lazy the camera man was. yeah mr taylor id like to see you get a shot of a fielder running about 2 metres infront of you with a 1200mm (or whatever) lens....

but the funniest was yet to come, i think it was tony greig, straight after taylors rant, "oh to be massaged by shane warne". silence followed for a good minute i reckon lol.

not trying to rip into anyone, but team sports photography is pretty mindless. its more a matter of having good equipment, understanding in and a little bit of creativity around light and angles. having said that, if thats what youd like to do, it wouldn't be all that hard to get into.

studio+54 ftw!

Yeah the guy didn't even have the body on the lens.

i thought he was holding a spare body in his lap. that makes it even more he-larious.

and i think tony's real fantasy would be "messaged by shane warne".

hi tny, its shn wrn. plz cm 2 rm 306 fr fun tmz. c u bb.

so i googled the canon 1200mm coz id never seen one before.

from wiki

"The Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L lens is a professional EF lens made by Canon that was introduced in 1993, six years after the launch of EOS cameras, and discontinued in 2005. The initial price for this lens was US$89,579. It weighs more than 36 pounds (16 kg), comes with its own heavy-duty tripod and case, and was built only by request. The focal length can be increased to 1700 mm f/8 or 2400 mm f/11 using the Canon EF Extenders 1.4× and 2× respectively. There are believed to be around a dozen of the EF 1200 mm lenses in existence. Sports Illustrated magazine owns two of them, as does Canon Professional Services and James Jannard, the billionaire founder of Oakley."

shit eh?

these were taking at full 15x zoom, no crop, complete with the "i havent had my hair of the dog yet" shakes at that tele

you too can take photos just like these, you just need the dedication to drag your ass out of bed after a 3 day binge

best of luck matt :thumb:

I've only had one go at sports photography. At my school's track & field day.

The pics didn't turn out too good though, I think I had the ISO too high.
