Need new headphones -- what do you recommend?

well... my sennheiser hd280's server me a good 3 years. maybe could've been a little bit longer but some fcker twisted the cover back the wrong way on them at a bbq on sunday and now one ear is kaput!

anyway, what do you all use/have used and what do you recommend?

are the technics rpdh1200s any good?

well actually i found fault in mine. the build quality is not that great. on both sides where the rubber head padding stops and the plastic starts at the top, the plastic snapped where the two screws are. i had to tape them up like crazy and occasionally had to remove the tape and retape as it would slip. not sure if i'm explaining it too well but basically a point of great stress was made of plastic rather than metal.

They sound good but are not very strong. Myself & a friend both bought a pair each at the same time and they have both developed cracks in the plastic headband with very little use. For the same price I would prolly get hd 25's from chemicalrecords.co.uk u can get them for about 250-260 Aus although they dont have them on their website (dunno why perhaps send an email?) The Rp-DJ1200 from technics have a better reputation and are cheaper also. The mdr-v6 from sony are also very popular with dj's as they sound great and are pretty sturdy, I think they also use them at storedj so they must be pretty strong:). Prolly a good idea to test out as many as you can as headphones are a pretty individual thing..

HD25's are great. You can replace every part on them. That alone would make them a great reason to buy them

Audiotechnica's have been great to use em for production work as well. Great sound

whoa whoa whoa. You cant say the HD25's have more bass coming out of them than the Technics. Thats exactly the reason i ditched them for HD25's :meh: IMO the HD25's are far more accurate than the technics by a long shot and have literally allowed me to be more accurate with my mixing (they are just so crisp). The technics have worn my drums to a nub over the last couple of years. The HD25s are like a breath of fresh air to me :lol:

alot of you are talking about the cheaper technics rpdj1200/1210s what about the rpdh1200s that i posted??

i was looking at the pioneer 1000s too but apparently the build quality is crapola.

my concern with going with sennheiser again is the build quality that i experienced with the hd280s. the technics look well built with metal in all the right places.

i'm also a sucker for full cup headphones. i know the hd25 do a great job of isolating external noise, ive used a mate's once before, but i just don't like the feel of them on my head.

4 years with the 1210's. solid construction, flat(ish) response, comfortable.

the 25's don't have a flat response, they're unrealistically bass extended...

I've not used the 50mm driver technics, but the 40mm drivers are nice.

ok - yes cappin. All i know is i have used both as have yourself and i am of the opinion the HD25's sound more concise and less bass heavy than the technics... as far as durability goes i have not had HD25's for an extended period so i cant comment on them in that arena. I can totally bouch for the technics though as far as durability is concerned - first pair i picked up (rpdj1200) in 2001 and i still have them... sure they look a bit crusty but they still do the job - never broken in what... feck 6 years now lol

cool, finally someone who has em. so how's the sound quality and build quality? is it hard to swivel and adjust the cup? and are they really that bulky and heavy?

heavy they are ... as i said ... no great for long mastering sessions ... but great for mixing with and enjoying tunes .. nice noise cancellation once you get your head in them. quite versatile in their swivelling and adjusting etc

pretty bottom heavy ... doesn't really sparkle with the top end.

the build is satisfactory ... maybe every part isn't replaceable ... but heck ... i've repaired cheaper headphones with my soldering iron and a bit of common sense

I still have my pair of rpdh's from when I was in sales for panasonic.

They are a good headphone, good bottom end great response. But......they are not flexible in movement with the cup.

Also I still find they dont sit on my head as comfortably as say the audiotechnicas.

Honestly, if you were going for a fully enclosed as my first experience after the 280's I would push towards the Sony headphones first. Only because they are cheaper, and they are possibly the closest feel fit wise to the rpdh's.

I know of people who have changed to the rpdh's and felt clostrephobic with them on.

If you were in Sydney I'd get you to come around and try the different headphones that I have.

the 1210's are a 40mm driver, the others are a 50mm driver... ovbious construction alterations and the drivers will sound different.

go to a store and test them out.

im a hd25 owner... but i remember a lot of people were anti the 25's when i was discussing them here haha... anyway i went to the store twice before buying and trying out different headphones.. so to this day i believe the 25s are great headphone and will last a long time :)

i love my hd-25sp's they are so light, 3 times lighter than sony's infact. And the dual cord thing is easily fixed, I got mine for $170 off ebay
