View Full Version : Honky Tonks
Hey. I'm from Sydney but recently spent a month in Melbourne... was wondering if anyone has been to Honky Tonks (on Duckboard Place off Flinders Lane). I went there once on a Thursday and again for Recloose and Common Factor and think it is simply the most beautiful place in the world! It's pretty hard to find, so if you haven't been, you should try and get there!

Oh, great! a person who went to see recloose and common factor! How was it???
Really really wanted to go see them both:(( I am quite upset that i chose to go to ken ishii over that, im sure it wouldve been nicer than being stuck in seven like a sardine:(
As for the venue, do you know if they have any regular nights??
Yes,
I spent a couple of days in melb and discovered this quaint club care of some friends. it's so well stylised, and looks like it wouldn't have cost a bomb to do it. i love the fact that it is at the end of some dingy alley, as is usually the case in melbourne. What a gem!
only wish we had it in sydney!

hmmm I also heard that a couple of Sydney live PA's did an unannounced (and reportedly great) gig there a few weeks ago...

Someone involved with HT's told me that Ken Cloud and Simon Caldwell are meant to be doing sets there sometime soon. Perhaps it is Pocket or Infusion who performed?

Ahh yes, that would be who I was referring to...
:]
HonkyTonk is the best place i've found in the last couple of years..
god damn, thats some funky seating arrangement.
the interior design is the BOMB!
a baby grand piano for a DJ console... who would of thunk it?
go check it out... it rocks

Honky Tonks is most definitely an enigma. The most beautiful looking (and done with such a keen sense of humour) bar that I've seen in ages and a huge warehouse-type space for a dancefloor, all surrounded by custom-made light boxes and groovy prints. And that sunken seating area at the front near the windows is quite unlike anything else in Melbourne.
Not sure how they're going to market it though? Phil K plays a regular 'back to mine' set there and the DJ roster is more on the electronica tip, so not sure how they're going to enforce their rather strict door and dress policy on the more rave-ish crowd who'd really appreciate this music?
As an example, we turned up at the back door of Rosati's for the 'SunnySide Up Thank You' party on the weekend, but still dressed for a cocktail party we'd been to beforehand. The door guy immediately stood up and said 'Umm, you guys'd be looking for Honky Tonks...it's just down there, thanks..." As it happened, we weren't and managed to talk our way into Rosati's anyway, but that should show you what is generally understood about 'Honky Tonks'. It's very dressy right now and I reckon many people who would enjoy their music policy and give the club a regular loyal patronage would not get past the door with their current policy. Can't have it both ways guys!
The bar staff told me they are mostly interested in only doing there own thing (ie. limiting private parties and hire-outs for functions of the venue to concentrate on their own roster) and that's all well and good while you're the hot new name in town. But that lasts about 6 months ('Misty'/'Gin Palace' etc) and then you're left begging for customers. I wish them good luck and hope they prove me wrong. It's a beautiful club with an interesting vibe and deserves to do well.

classy casual:P? how do they expect us to groove in heels and be comfy? hmmmmm ok i can understand the place wants its patrons to reflect a bit of class, but yeh casual can look just as damn classy and funky these days.

That "dingy alley" was recently the setting for a scene in Queen Of The Damned, the new Anne Rice movie with Aaliyah.
I am sure the club will evolve; the people behind it are musically educated and have great ideas, no doubt.

Happened to me only once before at the Casino, of all places, for Gods' Sakes...fake ID..whoopsies...
Kids do not try this at home, unless parental authorisation given...

Can I ask what man, besides a gay man, likes looking at pictures of cocks on the men's toilet door. That's not funny or cool. Honkeytonks lost it a long time ago, it used to be a boutique club that had a very select client base. Now it's trash bag central and people are "enlightening" us as to how good it is. THIS IS A SIGN PEOPLE.
Sorry drex but you're the only good thing that place has left.

No shit! I remember when he left revolver he started some night called Kitchen or something.... was awesome for the one night he actually pulled it off. I have no idea if it lasted longer than that one night tho!

I went to Honkeyz on Saturday and had a blast.. Great lil club, great crowd who are up for minimal tech house.. Was probably one of my fav clubs/nights..
Agreed, Saturday night was a hoot. Loads of people but all were up for a good time and some great music. Mike C especially rocked it!
I was down in Melbourne for my mates birthday on the weekend and I also checked out Honky Tonks on the saturday night. Personally I rated it as one of the best clubs in Melbourne and even probably one of the best clubs I've ever been too.
Anywhere that's dropping solid techno and plenty on minimal is up there for me and the venue is just awesome. Heard it was closing down? They gonna re open at a different venue?
i cry a little bit whenever i light a fag and see the 'have a great life' on the matchbox :`(
