View Full Version : holy crap i almost struck gold today
so i started a new job this week... im doing reception/service for the photographic department of c r kennedy here in brissy.
anyway long story short, an eldery photog had brought in his hasselblad 500c for a repair quote. it came back at around $500. i called him and explained it, he was like fuck it why bother. then i asked if he wanted to pick it up/have it sent back which he declined... just before i hung up he decided he wanted to come pick it up and stick on on his shelf for memory reasons (hes had it for 20 something years).
i went out to the store room to check it out and thought holy crap he obviously hasnt remembered he had a zeiss 80mm f/2.8 stuck on the end of it....
basically i want a medium format rig and i would eat dick for that lens to get me started lol.
discuss your moments of photographic fortune :stroke:
no idea about old lenses, but im guessing that's good.
ummm, im getting a photo published in My Home magazine on 28th march.
its for some bells beach article (its a surf pic), and i got payed a whopping $30! :goldminefase:

i wish i could get a photo-related job. i have buckets of tech and retail experience, can't get anything, anywhere!
rancho - if you want an MF rig, check out Bronica, you can pick up a complete kit for about $300 if you look around.
ETRS for 6x4.5, SQ for 6x6, GS-1 for 6x7. Affordable hardware, very good lenses. Cheaper and easier to handle than an RB67

its not too bad but unforuntately all the fun happens in melbourne so i dont get to play with the shit hot toys. but if i can afford it/still work there, one day ill get some kickass discounts on bowens, hasselblad, cambo etc etc. ill be picking up the sigma 8mm f/3.5 fisheye nice and cheap when we finally get stock in april. (we already have stock for nikon mount doubleyouteeeff?!)
sounds exciting but basically i spend all day dealing with repairs/warranties. e10's/20's are dogshit. and im sick of explaining to people that lcds dont spontaneously explode and lenses dont get stuck out at 45 degree angles with big cracks/dents in them without suffering impact damage.... oh and i deal with irivers too of which about 50% come back and test fine and its user error or pc issues. i hate being back at work lol. someone prease pay me to photo.
i pretty much lucked into the job too. im in the same boat, loads of knowledge (doubt im up there with you though, too young :P) and retail/cust service experience and was getting knocked back from shit kicker jobs. stoked.
cheers for the heads up too. have to pay off the debts first though :ninja:

congrats on the publishing. $30 is still $30 plus it adds to your cv :thumb:
Hmm I have seriously been looking at medium format too Rancho. Really not sure whether I should go for it though cos the processing costs are already high and are only going to get higher I imagine :meh:
6x6 sounds like the way to go, there's just something very appealing to me about shooting in the square frame, not to mention all the manual metering and focusing stuff. It just seems like it would make you think more about what you're shooting. Digital makes me lazy :P
Anyways I'll have a look at some bronica stuff, cheers phunk. Mamiya 645's can be had at decent prices, but I really want 6x6 :)

what are those sort of cameras used for these days? do they still give better photos?
yeah thanks. pretty happy with my first photo getting published.
although it's got nothing to do with the jobs im looking at (im looking for engineering work atm), i still put it in my resume, because currently my resume is only just over 1 page long.
just put in under other activites/intersts: Photography. (photo published in My Home Magazine 28/03/07)
but yeah i wasn't expecting/wanting any money. i just got a pm on another website from someone who wanted to use a photo i had posted, and i just said yes. can't wait to get the magazine though!

funny though. the photo doesn't suit bells beach at all. apart from the fact that the sun is shining, the guy is only wearing board shorts
something like this looks a little more like bells

MF is the only film still worth doing any more
35mm is becoming boutique as it's fast taken over by digital. there's really no benefit to running 35mm film now unless you're a rangefinder junkie.
medium format, however, is kick-ass. you're looking at up to 4 times the effective resolution of any affordable digital SLR.... plus all the benefits of the way MF makes you work.
You have a ginormous sexy viewfinder, you have a camera that commands respect and looks real, it slows you down and makes you contemplate.
Seriously, there's a whole world of difference between using a DSLR and having your shot pop into focus with the AF, and using MF and wrangling this giant metal beast and manually winding that lens out and seeing an image appear on that giant piece of ground glass.
if you dont want the complexity of a MF SLR and want something better than chinese shit, then look into all the japanese rolleicord ripoffs - ricohflex, ikoflex, reflex, argoflex, voitlander brilliant, lomo lubitel, etc... rolleiflex, yashicamat and mamiya C220/C330 if you can afford them.

I'd still love one of these...

...if I could only find one for loose change.

xpan is a bit of a white elephant. you've got an odd frame size so a digital lab can't handle it, you'd have to drum scan or flatbed scan it.
That and you could run medium format for half the price and retain the flexibility of re-framing.
Also there are countless MF cameras that can take 35mm with a suitable back or adaptor.
You could pick up a Mamiya 7 second hand and the 35mm conversion kit and have something that does what an Xpan does but for half the price.

Congrats pmack, great shot.
I recently had the opportunity to hang one of my photographs in a local gallery with other local photographers. Had an opening night and all ... was such a great experience.
I originally met the owner of the gallery on MySpace and have since become good friends and become a great teacher to me too!
