View Full Version : PIONEER CDJ-1000 MK2 or MK3 ??
hey guys just looking for some advice on which dex to buy... i was always looking at getting the MK3's but ive been told by a couple people they have something wrong with them or a fault? so i was told to get the MK2's instead.
has anyone else heard about the MK3's having a fault or anyone that has a set of MK3's ever had any problems with them?
any comments are appreciated!
thanks guys

I've heard only just recently that the BPM system in the MKIII can be inconsistent between units - only a worry if you are someone who relies upon the BPM counters to beatmatch.

At this stage in time, no BPM counter always get it right 100% of the time. If you notice on some player you could have a reading of 131 then a minute after 130, it fluctuates, though the real BPM does not, the reason why you have to rely more on your ears.
I heard MKii were better for other reasons, but most probably there would be not enough reasons to make you a bad DJ, at the end if you rely more on your audio skills being the top of the line, they should be no problem. If I had the money I'll get either one with no fuss.

Meh sounds like a bit of hype to me as I have used both and have never encountered any problems. Also if I am not mistaken the mk 3's are made in china whereas the mk 2's were made in japan? Not that this matters anymore as all the components for a&h mixers are made china and most of the mixers are assembled there also. Anyway I would go for mk2 800's as they feel just as good as a 1000 and are much cheaper.
I was reading an article where Christopher Lawrence said that the first bunch of MK3s couldn't hold there pitch properly but pioneer didn't admit it at first, he said something to the tune of that he always checks out if the MK3 were the first version or 2nd....
may want to do some research,
btw i think the article was on inthemix
buy whatever you can afford at the time.

Actually this would go some lengths to explain that BPM error issue... moreso the BPM error is a symptom of the pitch slipping problem.

You would only be able to buy MK IIs s/hand now wouldn't you?

I've also heard that the first batch of MK3's had problems of randomly jamming up and skipping... I heard that The Family (in Brisbane) kitted out all their booth's with mk3's, but then returned them cause they were having too many problems...

The CDJ1000 mk2's counter is very accurate... more often than not the reason it fluctuates is because the tempo of the track is in between 2 increments... happens around the midpoint more often than not...
thanks for the replies!
planB any chance on a link to that article on here?
cheers!
i've had my mk3 for about 3 months now and it works 100%. holds a pitch perfectly and does everything it says it would. in regards to the bpm not being accurate that could very well be true. i dont have another cdj to test that however.
i also heard that the mp3 function is dodgey and stuffs up if too many tracks are on the one cd, but it hasn't happened to me.

I don't know, I'm not the one who posted about it :P

I saw somewhere recently about firmware upgrades for MkIII's so maybe they have fixed the problems. It's a DIY upgrade too. I think you can download from DJ factory.... Try googleing it.
my mate bought a pair with a firmware upgrade disc included... the CDJ already had a later firmware on both of em though...
As far as i know the lastest firmware version is v2.20
- improved disc readability
- improved sound quialty with master tempo
- improved accuracy in the display of BPM
BPM seems to be pretty bang on in most cases, always the same as the efx unit anyway

Had a play on the MKIII over the weekend and noticed:
a) Doesn't read MKII memory cards
b) Pitch slider feels aLOT stiffer and sturdier
c) Displays are heaps easier to read and more detail :thumb:
a) Doesn't read MKII memory cards
Nick Galea reckons there's a firmware update available so it does... but I know the ones on sat night (they were Torne's) had the latest firmware so he's probably wrong :P or could be the other way...
Two things I dont like about the MK IIs is firstly the display on the MKIII is a lot nicer/brighter/easier to read than on the MKII.
The other thing is when you're cueing on an MKIII u can hit cue as many times as you want and when u want to drop in the track u hold down cue and press play to continue playing the track.
But on MKIIs this doesnt work.. you have to press play.. if u hold down cue and press play it pauses the track.

i got a mk3 and can't fault it, although i never use the mp3 function.... but there WAS a firmware update distributed about 2 months after it was released to fix "BPM counter accuracy" but then i never noticed anything wrong! but yeah gotta say thing i love about the 3 over the 2 is DEFINATELY the press cue+play continues the song, great when u were cuing up and decide shit this is a damn good part to drop in, so u can keep it going!
P.S. If ANYONE needs the updated firmware i got it on a CD. PM me.

Does the 800mk2 have the same cue/play function?
b) Pitch slider feels aLOT stiffer and sturdier
That's great! Was never a fan of the looseness of the pitch slider compared to a technics 1200.
